21. That is one dangerous ****ing job

TRUE story

1968, at the Chevy dealership I apprenticed at. RAINING like all hell in the late spring. TOP OF THE CARRIER (back in the day, not so safe). Dark green Corvette coupe. Driver starts to back down, car slips 1/4 way down the upper ramps, hits the gas, catches, OVER THE TOP up in the air rolls over in mid air and LANDS on the roof middle of the highway. Horrific noise. People scrambling to get the car turned over and get traffic stopped. Guy wasn't seriously hurt but he got taken away and Anchor Motor freight (defunct) in their baby blue transporters came later to pick up their trailer and the 'Vette pushed by a snowplow back into the lot.

Not me.

If they can't, they'll try as hard as they can to maim you. And they do. It happens all the time. Car haul is one of the most, if not THE most dangerous trucking disciplines out there.

At any large auto transport company with a roster of over 100 drivers, the top seniority guys were what we called at one co. (Teamster gig in Mich) "The walking wounded"

Most of the top 20 on the seniority board walked with a limp.

I have broken both thumbs, my right one twice.
Broke my right ankle
Sprained the living hell out of my left, that blew up like a grapefruit. Literally.
Cut my forehead open several times.
Left tufts of hair on an upper deck (I do a much better job of ducking now!)
The fingernail on my left middle finger has just now grown back from a smashing 6 months ago.
 Bruised ribs.
Bruises as a matter of course.
Working outside loading and unloading in all types of weather. Put on a load of Fords in Wayne Michigan when the snow was coming down one and a half inches an hour SIDEWAYS

And I have to be behind the wheel at 6:15 in the morning to drive 75 miles to the port of Brunswick to load nine for a 3-way to Punta Gorda, Cape Coral and the Fort Myers Airport.

Luckily it will only be in the 30's when I hit the road.

Nighty night! Drive safe!

Damn.  Those trucks are almost as dangerous as guns.

We should outlaw them immediately.

Same here, but I don't travel as much as I used to.

Trains seem to have taken a lot of business from OTR drivers over the last 5-10 years.  Not that that's a bad thing unless you're an OTR driver, but it means lower prices for people buying stuff.

I thought DUmmies liked trains.  You think they'd be for it.

They are all hauled into the dealerships by truck.

I used to mess with the cranky union drivers when they used to try and rush me to check them in. They could care less if I was trying to take care of a customer. One asshole tried calling his dispatcher saying we were taking too long, that backfired one him.  :lmao: We were allowed 20 minutes per car and if they started to play games I used all 20 minutes.

It did look like a pretty dangerous job, that part I must agree with.

Maybe it has to do with the availability of rail service and places to offload them.  There are more train tracks here than interstates.

True.

The dealerships I worked at were right off the interstate and the leading railroad had went out of business years prior, The Rock Island Lines.

While I will agree that it is "that stupid **** the brain-damaged primitive," I've heard the same thing for a while.  I instinctively put my hands at 10 and 2 because that's what was beaten into my head many years ago.  But, with the modern airbags in the steering column, it's awfully easy to have one's wrists broken when the airbag deploys, and one's hands rocketed back into their face.  I've heard that a really good race car driver of the 60's (Phil Hill, IIRC) used to drive with his hands at the 5 and 7 positions on the wheel, and he was a rather successful driver of some renown.

I suppose it depends upon what one considers the greatest peril: a collision in which case the airbag deploys, or losing control over the vehicle because of unanticipated conditions of the road.

I consider the latter more likely than the former, in my own case.

The MACK truck no hands position for the first 6 gears was no hands on the wheel and left arm through the steering wheel.

I stuck my left arm thru the steering wheel for low third only.

Truck driver or Broker/Financial Consultant??  You decide.

While we're at it, let's review what we read yesterday, 01/31/2013.

At 6:15am, this primitive had to start driving 75 miles to Brunswick, GA, which is around 1 hour north of Jacksonville, FL.  So he gets to Brunswick around 7:30am, let's say he gets out of there by 8:00am, with traffic on I-95, I-4, and I-75 you're looking at an easy 8 hours to Ft Myers alone, much less having to unload autos when you get to 3 different locations.  That would be a full day without time to do much of anything else.

Instead, this kook is posting at 1pm.

Damn good find!  At 1.9 million miles (giving the DUmmie 100,000 miles/year) we're talking about 19 years of driving.  Combine that with 37 years (or so) as a financial something or other then figure going to work at the age of 20 in either of those fields .... the Heretic must be an old man ...
