Top Senate Republicans reacted to President Trump’s tweets Wednesday morning that the U.S. government “will not accept or admit transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. military.”

The surprise announcement caught Republicans off guard. Many took to Twitter or released statements disagreeing with Trump’s conclusion, including Senators from conservatives states like Alabama, Utah, and South Carolina. Several of the senators also served in the military:
