Title: Is MIRT inadvertently locking out "legitimate" DU'ers?
Post by: GOP Congress on June 24, 2018, 11:48:39 AM
I had a one-time client that is a medium-sized Los Angeles-based advertising agency, which essentially has an anti-Trump (hence, anti-Republican/conservative) bias throughout the company. A couple of weeks ago, I was at the site instructing management associates about the database setup for their reports. On a training break, I attempted to log into Democratic Underground under one of my many banned user names. Of course I couldn't log in as MIRT is brutal, but I wasn't on a VPN.

Recently, I got a call from management that many of their employees complained about not being able to log onto DU, believe it or not. Apparently, they all got notices that their screen names were banned! For awhile, I couldn't figure out the problem, but then I realized that MIRT is so paranoid they preemptively banned anyone who even logged in from an account that was on the same IP as a banned account! I know this because I cannot create a new DU user from my own IP. I have to actually use VPN and a US or Canada-based IP address to log into DU, and then I have to stay off my own IP to risk being logged off.

Anyway, I actually told the company the truth: I had tried to log into Democratic Underground myself, but they had banned me in the past. I also told them that the site itself *MAY* be banning users on IP addresses, and that they take it up with the site management. I probably won't get any repeat work from the company, but thought I'd let you in on this little nugget. To be fair, I'm not sure if this is all a huge coincidence or not, but the story is funny as hell in any case if it is true.

(Geez, this sounds like a bouncy.)

I'd like to say I'm surprised, but I'm not. Lib sites are very over-sensitive.

I sometimes make comments on Yahoo and their news slants left at least 95% of the time. I've had comments that were posted where I said that liberals are liars and the news sources are unreliable only to have them removed. Recently, on stories about Krauthammer dying, Yahoo was scrubbing nasty liberal reactions so quickly that it would be gone before you could post a reply, and even at that they couldn't keep up with all the hate the libs were spewing.

They're in a cocoon and they love it there. That's why their interest in us making fun of how stupid they are has always been confusing to me on some level. You want a cocoon, but yet you go outside that cocoon to see if anyone notices your cocoon. And when you see they have and are cutting you to shreds, it makes you mad.

Weird people.

That DU volunteer staff can see IP addresses doesn't surprise me. When I was a Mod on RO (nominally I still am, I think, but haven't looked in since last year) we screened new regs' IPs prior to approving them. We could also see the IPs from which members posted, if we wanted, but seldom did. It sounds like DU has SW that alerts to banned people popping in, including the IP they used. Evidently they think they dumped a bunch of socks, when in reality they failed to think that just maybe banned people consult for companies with employees who are DU members.

The DUmmies are perpetually petrified that someone might be a mole/troll. During my period as a mod they were constantly chattering in the mod shop about IP addresses.  It was hilarious.

I am sure there actual members who share the same IP address with banned members and/or moles.

I know DU has banned many actual leftists for various reasons justified or not.

They may as well shut DU down if they are that paranoid of moles.

On RO we just deleted new regs that were obvious spamsters (5 or 10 regs a day from the Russian IP was kind of a hint). Once approved we let people show what they were with their posts.

And this paranoia makes me smile.  I have infested DU for damn near 14 yrs. Got a number of high post accounts.

In my spare time I like to wire up the dummies...hey some people like model cars, model trains, hang gliding... I like wiring up the dummies. So sue me.

I got it down to a science.  Funny thing is,  I have actually outed several of my moles here by telling the dummies exactly what my mole was doing... and they have never caught on!

And we are the stupid ones.   :mental:

Where I work, DU is listed as a banned site.  Meaning you can't access it from my workplace.  CU and CC, on the other hand, . . . :whistling:

14 some years for me too.  And I've subtly tried to get legit DUmmies banned, for no real reason.  It worked at least twice.

Uh huh.  The best way to hide something from a primitive is by posting it on a conservative web-site, laying out everything.

I did this while the friends of Steve Dawes were creating his campaign web-site, not quite explicitly, but nearly explicitly, revealing what was going on.

Omaha Steve had lots and lots of opportunities to stave off his subsequent embarrassment and humiliation.....if he'd paid any attention to franksolich.

But no, he didn't, and he paid the price.  Ignoring franksolich does have consequences.

Some years earlier, we'd done this during the scam that rocked the internet, blatantly displaying our cards for poor stupid Beth to see, hiding nothing from her about what we were going to do.....and she could've staved off many stupid missteps she made if she'd only read franksolich.

And yeah, we're the stupid ones.....

If one wishes to hide something from the primitives, post it here.

That is why there are so few lefties on DU Jr.  They can't handle not being in their echo chamber of Orthodoxy.

Shouldn't the employees be working and not wasting time on going to DU?  :thatsright:

It's one of those typical liberal shops in a refurbished mini-industrial building, expresso bars and even a couple of dogs. At least a dozen anti-Trump posters, a few more anti-Cox (Republican running for governor against socialist/communist Newsome), and every computer a Mac. I'm sure that not only is it allowed to go on DU, it's encouraged. Interestingly, I was originally recommended for the one-time gig by a conservative I know.

For what it's worth, I've CONFIRMED that IP addresses are being used to preemptively ban new accounts if they come from IP's that have been used by banned accounts. I just got a new DU user by using my phone data account, not my wifi account. I don't have access to VPN lately, so I'm going this route for now.

It's interesting that DU/MIRT doesn't view multiple members from the same distinctive company IP as possible sock puppets.

MIRT is erogenous and poking up your exit pipe.  They smell, they stink, probe and like it.  Expose your nether at their pleasure.
