Title: Anyone got an answer for this here idiot?
Post by: CG6468 on April 30, 2012, 03:15:58 PM
When I completely shut down my machine, I have problems starting it again. Sometimes it begins to load up, but then it just stops with the whirlygig in the center of the screen. It responds to nothing, so I have to unplug it to shut it off.

I tried starting in Safe Mode, etc., and the same thing happens; it just freezes up. Then I try it again in Normal mode, and (more slowly than usual) ti comes back and I can get online and to my programs.

I've run Malware Bytes, Spybot, and Iobits System Care 5 and they show no problems. Avast! anti-virus shows no problems, either.

It starts normally when I click on "shut off and turn back on."

Any ideas?

click the windows logo and then enter into the search bar, "msconfig". (without the quotation marks) Click on the msconfig file that comes up. Go to the start up tab and uncheck EVERYTHING & then reboot. See how that works for you, Jeff. You may need to reboot again just to see if it speeds up. You got my number still, I hope. If you have any major probs, buzz me.

Didn't work, Thor. The log in screen just locks up; no mouse, no keyboard recognized. It just sits there with the spinning doodad.

I reloaded all the stuff in config.sys and it showed the same old symptoms.

I just let it sit there from 3AM until I got up at 6AM, and the desktop had loaded up. I timed it for 20 minutes before I went back to bed, and it just sat there. The hard disk light was not flashing at all.

We'll see what happens now. It does allow me to get into the SAFE mode.  :???:

The last time I had symptoms like that, the hard drive completely crashed a couple of days later.

Our grandson is a computer geek, and he said the same thing. He would install a new hard disk, install Windows on the digital drive he added to the computer for me, and upgrade my Microsoft Office for me. (Excel sometimes fails to respond.)

At least I have the laptop, but I'm doing this on the desktop right now.

I couldn't stand it any more; nothing I did would correct anything. So I took it to a local guy (highly recommended) and he found that 8 applications of Google Chrome were running at the same time, probably the result of 3 viruses I couldn't find.

Works like new, Thor! He said it was one of the fastest machines he had worked on.

Were they showing up in the Task Manager processes?

'Tis why I refuse to use Google Chrome unless in an emergency (IE or Firefox won't work). Glad he found your problems!!

Only time/thing I've encountered a problem with Chrome is System mechanic will shoot me a warning Chrome is sucking up to many system resources. That's usually when I've got 8 - 10 windows and tabs open doing cluster#&%k tasking. I shut down a few windows and Alles klar.

Me be happy too! And it took less than 1/2 day for him to fix everything. It was taking over 8 minutes to load up after I signed on.

Firefox just doesn't work well on this machine. Lots of locked screens, blank stuff, freezes, etc. I haven't used IE in years. I don't have those problems with Chrome.

I'd be happy to have a browser that didn't shit itself after a year.  I've been through IE, Firefox, Safari, and now Chrome.

I loved Safari's Top Sites feature... it's the default browser on Android/Kindle.

I've had to reset my Kindle once already since December because of it.  What the hell is going on?  Can't anyone make a decent damn browser and leave it be?

My safari has been acting up. I hope it doesn't jinx me, or otherwise bad omen me.

I had to do a complete reset on mine at least twice.  It erases everything.

I gave up and switched to Chrome last week.

I haven't had any problems with Chrome - yet. It's probably a question of "when," not "if."

I have had some games on Facebook cause Chrome to freeze up.
