Computerworld - NASA scientists have given up hope of finding any signs of life from the Phoenix Mars Lander, giving the robotic machine up for dead on the Martian surface.

NASA reported late on Monday that it did not detect any signals emanating from the Lander during last week's fourth and final effort to find out if it had survived the harsh and extremely frigid Martian winter.
Scientists also believe that an image taken this month by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter shows signs of "severe ice damage" to the Lander's solar panels.
The finding means that after collecting scientific data for five months on the Martian surface, the robotic rover is being given up for dead.

If we give up space exploration and give it to the civilian comunity only disaster can happen.
As of today we have tons of space junk that will eventually fall to earth and cause some problems.
If we don't keep space under the government, the Corporations will try to build hotels and apartments out there, we will look into the night sky to see Drink Coke or Hotel 6 blocking out the moon and stars. Big business will destroy space.
What I believe we need to spend money on is our Mother, Earth. Sure we are curious about what is OUT THERE.
All that should be in its own time. We have seen that we do not understand our home planet, we have little knowledge of how Earth really works, so why are we trying to understand a dead planet when this living planet is yet to be understood.??
I say, keep space under government controll but take the scientists into the study of tectonic plates, undersea volcano's, How Hurricanes and tornado's form ,can we controll them?
So we explore a dead planet while ours is alive, kicking, and killing human beings by the millions every year.
