Help me figure out what to do dress up my stairs
« on: November 24, 2008, 08:11:05 AM »
So, here is a picture of the staircase going from my kitchen to my basement...

I would appreciate any recommendations on what I can do make the staircase presentable.

Do you want cheap?

Cover the step landings in indoor/outdoor carpet.  Paint the step falls in a color complimentary to the carpet or cover them with peel & stick floor tiles.  Use flat outside corner molding on the step edges and an inside corner molding where the steps meet.  Paint molding to match or contrast.  Sand the handrail and paint or stain to go with molding.  Get rid of the white walls.  Use a paint color that goes with the I/O carpet.

Hmm. I hadn't thought of using floor tiles on the risers. Good idea!

LU has a good idea . Although I wouldn't put the peel n stick tiles on the steps due to slipping & falling possibility. Put them on the risers though for a nice contrast.

The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.

I've slipped on the steps in the past due to them being carpeted.

Yep. Improperly carpeted steps are indeed a hazard.

You can get non-skid peel and press or glue in place 12x12s at a flooring store. Probably Lowes or Home Depot as well!

Okay, now I see why you want to cover that up, with anything.

You probably don't have the funds, but if you did, you should tear them out and have a union-card-carrying carpenter build completely new ones.

But as I'm assuming it's a do-it-yourselfer on limited funds, perhaps a couple of gallons of durable white paint would cover up that atrocity.

Your blue taffeta gown should do quite nicely.

Wow, those are some fugly stairs.  A couple coats of white paint and some wood trim along the wall to cover up the gaps might be a good idea.

Does plywood take paint very well?  :evillaugh:

Thats particle board, it'll suck up paint like a camel drinking water.  I think Undies has the best idea going so far.

If you go the route of painting the steps, you can put a small ammount of fine sand in the paint (set aside some for the tops of the risers only) making it non-skid.
