On a PC :ctrl alt :" then type the letter . On a Mac use "option u" then type the letter

I may be reading this wrong but when I hold down ctrl/alt and type a letter I get this...

As you can see it is exactly nothing, so can someone clue me in?

I may have misremembered

Control+Shift+: (you have type the colon) then the letter.  I have a Mac now so  I can't test it so see what is wrong.

On the laptop I hold down FN and ALT and type the numerical code for the symbol I want.

For example 0153 yields â„¢

On a desktop you hold down ALT and type the number on the numeric keypad.

My keyboard does not have an Fn key, you unfeeling clod.

The Alt key works.  Good ol' ASCII tweaks.
