Printers/All-in-ones ???
« on: June 22, 2012, 09:27:14 PM »
Once more I venture into computer related corner of CC to harvest the wisdom of the sage tech masters.

I'm looking for an inkjet All-in-one that handles paper up to 11"x17" paper, scans well, and prints photos well. When I say well in regards to the photo printing I'm not talking about professional photo quality that is equal to what you would get from a lab. I just mean good, solid copies of photos.

Right now I have a Brother MFC-6490CW-1. It does an excellent job on standard printing. A so-so job at scanning. And a terrible, very terrible, job at printing photos.

Any suggestions oh great wizards of technology?

I'll be watching along with you.  I'm looking too. One trick I picked up on printing photos on a desktop printer is to re-size (less pixles).  Modern cameras can make some pretty big files & our printers can't handle it.

My mom has an HP that she is pretty happy with that does large size paper.

Printer

Ink is expensive... especially if you take pictures with a large single color background like a red brick building. I think it is pretty slow. Good print though in my opinion. She only uses it for large stuff. She has a faster one for everyday stuff. Not sure about the scanning abilities of it.

Hopes this helps!   :cheersmate:

I actually looked at that one at Staples, and I've been happy with previous HPs. My only concern about it is it appears to only have one paper tray. I have to use multiple paper sizes so I need at least two paper trays. I don't have to have two. I'm just concerned that constantly changing the paper in the tray might wear something out quicker.

We buy $20 (new) Cannons. It's cheaper than getting a new cartridge.

I've a HP print-scan-copy device.

Can't fault it - in that it's never given me any dramas.

Ink is a killer though - about 50% of the cost of a new device.

We got this a few weeks ago, pretty happy with it.   Doesn't do 11" x 17", however.

Lasers only in my house. While toner ain't real cheap either, it's cheaper over the long haul than ink.

I'd really, really, really love to have a color laser that does 11x17 paper, but man, they are spendy.

I want to get a lazer, but can't justify the cost for it. I do know I am sick of throwing my printer out and buying a new one every time we run out of ink though (I do that because it is cheaper to buy a new printer than it is to buy ink refills)

Most of the manufacturers wised up to that practice.  They no longer put a full ink cartridge in their printers.

Yeah, it is still cheaper than getting the ink refills though. I never understood why the ink refills cost more than the printer.

Consumerism. They lower the price on the base printer to the ridiculous point (probably losing money in the process) and then **** you when it's time to buy the consumables.

You would think that they would realize that people do that, and then lower the prices of the ink. I guess not.

I never claimed to understand marketing - but it seems to be a practice that they all do.

Yeah, sometimes it is stupid. But hey, if they want to run like that, let them.

Different size paper at the same time? Supposedly this one will take various paper sizes, but you have to do it as separate jobs. Might be easier just to do that than spend big bucks for multiple trays.

Don't really know. I don't print that much and Mom prints out what printer/ink she wants me to buy for whatever holiday it is.
