Title: A Web Site Success Story
Post by: Eupher on October 14, 2013, 09:22:52 AM
I belong to several fraternal organizations, one of them being the Association of Military Musicians.

For years, there was a limp-dick one-page web site. Then a guy came along 3-4 years ago and expanded it to something like 4 pages. Still pretty limp-dick, but better.

The Secretary and I (I'm the Treasurer) wanted to incorporate some kind of way for people to pay their dues online. And we both knew that Paypal offers that kind of thing. The previous webmaster couldn't be bothered to actually do the work in getting that going and actually lied about how complicated it was supposed to be.  :whatever: F'n GS15 asshole, just like the rest of the f'n shitheel bureaucrats that infest the gubmint, but I digress.  :-) )

So in last month's business meeting at our annual reunion, I made sure to get on the agenda to fire the asshole and put me in there as webmaster. I'll git 'er done.

And so, with a bit of help from my stepson (he designed the home page graphic), I present the first web site that I put together myself in Wordpress. (Okay, call it 80%.)

It ain't quite done yet, but I'd call it close. We may or may not put an "AMM Store" page on there with a shopping cart capability (to sell T-shirts, baseball caps, polo shirt, etc.). That kinda depends on yet another shitbird (he used to be the Treasurer until I unassed him a year ago because he was so incompetent  :lmao: ) and whether he can get off his ass and get me the information I need, and there are a few bells and whistles I'd like to put in as well.

But for somebody who doesn't know squat about html (and still don't) and knows even less about web design and programming, I think this is a pretty good first effort:

Good job.

Here is the Wordpress site I told you about.  It's set up to have multiple contributors that can post to the main page and a Paypal link for donations:

One thing that I wanted to avoid, and it took some investigating to figure out, was the blog look. Wordpress is first and foremost a blogger's software, and while it's very configurable, it's real easy to get sucked into the blog thing. Didn't want that for our site, although there is a page where news items are displayed and then there's the contact page.

I do not have the hours it would take to manage a blog. And I've already had to fight off one very persistent spammer.

The Paypal thing was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. Paypal provides the code, all you have to do is dump it into a page and save, and bang, you've got yourself a Paypal button!

One thing that

I'd like to see that reunion.

Not a musician let alone a military musician, but Branson is just a hop, skip, and jump from me in Shell Knob.

Let me know if I can help with anything like uploading a street map, etc., specific to the reunion.

http://www.Branson.com and http://www.radisson.com/branson-hotel-mo-65616/mobranso would be good additions to your reunion page.

I did find out there are plugins that allow you to import a Google map into Wordpress, but I haven't gotten to it. Thanks for the reminder! If I have trouble, I'll give you a shout.

If you're interested in attending, you can go as a guest. The registration fee does apply, though.  :drink:

Here's some more maps from the state of Missouri down to a variety of Branson locations.

You can link to the page and not need to bother with GOOGLE plugins.
