Title: Program not responding
Post by: CG6468 on July 23, 2013, 10:13:21 AM
My laptop running Windoze 7 gives me the "Program not responding" message for every program on the machine.

Anyone know what happened? It worked fine a while back.

I would run a good Malware scanner like Malwarebytes.

See if anything pops up and remove it.

Try running Disk Cleanup.  Right-click on C:, select Properties.

If that doesn't work, check your BIOS to see if there is a hard disk diagnostic program you can run to rule out any hardware issues.

Run a check disk as Chris said.

You might want to check through some of these previously reported "not responding" problems with Win 7.

I see the 'Not Responding' in the title bar, and the cursor shows the 'wait' circle.  Then it recovers and operates normally.

Mine locks up and will not respond to anything, even the mouse.

How old is your hard drive?

How old is your hard drive?

Brand new. Well, maybe 3 or 4 months old.

I'll call our grandson. He's coming down here anyway, and he's a whiz at this stuff. Maybe he can fix it for me.

Does your computer have a 'quick recovery' option on it that reimages the OS and leaves your program and user files intact?  It's usually the F11 key to get to the recovery partition.

Don't do a full recovery... I lost count of the number of times one of the employees here did that on their computer because they were goofing around and pushing buttons. :p

I'm just gonna wait for our grandson.

Grandson hasn't responded. He's working and otherwise doing some things.

My computer repair guy said it should be no sweat for him to fix things. I'll drop it off for him on Friday.

Problems.

My laptop had 21 viruses that Avast! failed to detect. He uses AVG's free version and recommends that, although he used to also use Avast!. I dumped Avast! and tried to load AVG, but it just froze up.

But it still won't recognize the printer in any of the programs. We eliminated and reloaded the printer software 3 times to no avail. He spent 3 hours here this PM, and finally just took my suggestion that he take it back to his place to work on it. He'll let me know if it should be trashed or if it's fixable. It is about 9 years old and weighs a ton; hard to carry around.

If it's scrap, I think I'll get a MACBook of some kind.

There's always the last resort, reformat and reinstall the OS.

Not worth it. I'm tired of lugging this HP around, and it's so old now.......

Plus I'd have to reinstall all the programs, too. Bah!

Called my repairman............

He spent HOURS on the phone with Epson and ended up deleting all of the printer files for Epson. He reloaded the updated and/or changed programs Epson sent him.

Coming over this PM. We'll see.

Interestingly, Rusty called this morning and wondered if I was referring to HIS computer. He has the exact same problems I have. His guy also said Avast! sucks and that all that's needed is Microsoft's antivirus.

Well, laptop works but is shot. Won't allow reinstallation of my Epson printer/Scanner/Copier.

So I'll copy the files onto a thumb drive or two to load them on a new laptop.

Grandson says to stay away from Toshiba and recommends an ASUS S56CA--6GB MEMORY, 15.6 DISPLAY, 750 HARD DRIVE, 24GIG SOLID STATE DRIVE. And it has a CD/DVD drive, which most laptops have eliminated.

Best Buy wanted $656.99, but I ordered it from Amazon for $549.99, 2 day delivery.

Trouble is it comes with WINDOZE 8; grandson said it's no problem for him to back load WINDOZE 7 for me.

Received the new ASUS about an hour ago. Lots of playing around, but I'll wait for my grandson to retroinstall WIN7.

If you have a spare afternoon or long evening, you may try this comprehensive, yet fairly easy to follow (and free) process. It's worked for me.

Our grandson came down last night and revised WIN8 on my new laptop, making it appear like WIN7. I'm no longer concerned with the HP that gave me problems. It was 16 years old.

We'll tweak it some more this morning.

Onward & upward!  :yahoo:

Join the crowd. I managed to futz with it long enough to clean out all the garbage and it's at least a little less clunky, but whoever came up with that piece of shit ought to be strapped to a chair and flogged with cane reed until they bleed from every orifice.

I don't have any problems that I know of, but I think this is a fabulous resource and have emailed myself the link.

Thank you, and H5.

I just installed Classic Shell and can now say "fgedaboudit!!" to W8.

My WIN8 works great now! Our grandson cleaned out all of the shit files, downloaded some other programs, and made it look like WIN7.

I installed AVAST! to see if it works out.

I think I'll be fine with it now.
