Title: Foods we Despise
Post by: Karin on April 08, 2013, 02:01:25 PM
Was walking through the deli/prepared part of Walmart and there was a cooler of ready salads there.  One of them was a "seafood salad."  It had huge chunks of that fake "krab."  You know, chunks of processed pollack or whatever with red food coloring added to it.   Is this the most disgusting stuff, or what?

I inadvertently ate a bite of it once, when I ordered a crab quiche.  Bit into it, and it was this fake "crab" crap.  I'm not one to send stuff back, but boy did I that time.  Scolded them too.  You can't call that crab on a menu.  Yuck!

Off the top of my head?  PEAS . . . .  :panic:

Also, when I was a little kid, and my brothers were still in the house (well, 2 of them were), my mom cooked an entire cow's tongue and brought it out on a plate just as it was -- not sliced up or garnished or disguised in any way.  I can remember looking at it in horror as my brothers started making all kind of disgusting noises with their tongues (they were in their teens and early 20s)

Needless to say, I did NOT have any tongue

not big on lima beans either.

And I despise Bluefish -- too strong and oily for me, although I like 95% of other seafood.

Chris's link up there takes you to a recipe for mushy peas.  You are allowed to write a review for it.   :naughty:

Now spinach, I kind of like sauteed in butter and garlic.  It's good with salmon and mashed potates.

Sweet potatoes.  Don't like em, and they seem to be all the rage now.

Fried Mozzarella sticks.  These are popular, too, and I don't get it.  Really pretty flavorless.

I like peas. Tongue, when properly prepared and sliced, is good for sandwiches like luncheon meat. I also love sweetbreads scrambled with eggs, and Rocky Mountain Oysters - not to mention raw oysters on the half shell.

But hot, stewed tomatoes......(http://www.conservativeunderground.com/forum505/images/smilies/vomit.gif)

Mom would make succotash and I would try to hide all the lima beans somewhere and just eat the corn.  :-)

Usually it didn't work   :bawl:

Yup.

Add Brussels sprouts to that shitheap aka "vegetable".

You have to hold a gun to my head to get me to eat fish. Not crazy about fresh fish as it is, but then you let it sit for a week and then try to get me to eat it and I'll puke it right back in your lap.

Bugs? Like lobster, crab, scallops, mussels, squid, crawdads?  :rotf: Not just "No," but "HELL NO!"

Peas? Good to go. Broccoli? Preferably raw, yepper. Cauliflower, same thing.

For the most part, once you start cooking vegetables, it's game over, buddy. Pack up your shit - you're outta here.

I love steamed and mashed up cauliflower, made just like mashed potatoes.  I ate a lot of that when I was doing the Atkins thing.  Butter, sour cream (or regular cream), salt and pepper and then run through the food processor . . . good stuff!

Mine have been covered by others- cucumbers, lima beans; but add to that creamed corn.

My spousal unit can't handle pig's feet.  I like them, but on the rare occasion I get to eat them, I have to do all the preparation: boiling, broiling, etc.  The one time I convinced her to try them (she admitted they smelled really good), she threw them back up onto the living room floor.   :hammer:

I really don't like okra prepared any way,  although I'll eat it in gumbo or if my mom fries it.  I really only like the fried batter though.

I also don't like raw tomatoes, except in pico de gallo or salsa. I often look at them and wish I did. They look  great but I just can't take the taste.

I love tomatoes cooked in things though.

I'm the same way about tomatoes, but even pico de gallo is to "tomatoey" for me.  I don't like sweet potatoes, cooked carrots, or cooked peas, I don't like my vegetables to be sweet. I will eat raw carrot or peas happily though.

This is probably the worst thing I ever ate.  I'd rather die than have that taste in my mouth again:

Canned and boiled silkworm pupae.  Words cannot come close to describing how nasty these were.  Perhaps if you think of a savory boiled sock that has been steeped in bug juice and formaldehyde, you might come close.

I choked down most of a can at a cabin we were staying at, but finally threw out the rest behind the back porch.  The raccoons that were scavenging around the back porch wouldn't even touch the remainder.

I wouldn't try pico when I was younger because I thought I would not like it. Glad I took the risk.

I didn't think I liked sweet potatoes until I tried them fried as chips. A place in Dallas serves them this way. Yum.  Sweet potato fries are pretty good too. Otherwise, no thanks.

Good God, man! You had to have been hungry to eat bugs.

I'm probably a lot like George Carlin. If I have to ask questions about what it is on my plate, forget it. I'm not interested. I didn't come here to ask questions, I came here to EAT.

Creamed corn - another disgusting creation from somebody with entirely too much time on their hands.

Bavarian weisswurste. Mit süssem Senf. Once or twice ain't bad, but when you're on the road playing 3 gigs a day and that's what they're feeding you 3 times a day, it starts to get old.

Real old.

My problem with liver is the texture. It's not like meat - it's like pressed cardboard. Onions can't quite negate that.

And then the whole idea of eating organ meat is repugnant.

Chicken and Biscuits is huge around these parts.  Every church, legion, and lodge has dinners featuring them.  It's just shredded chicken in gravy, poured over halved biscuits.  The major controversy and source of catty gossip is whether or not peas and carrots belong in it or on the side.  No matter, it doesn't appeal to me and sounds bland and gummy.  It can also look like your dog got sick.

The flavor of tarragon:  Can't abide it.  I had some bearnaise sauce once just on the verge of the flu.  That will ruin a food for a lifetime.

Not a fan of liver but I do love liverwurst! I would eat liverwurst sandwiches as a kid because my dad would always have it around.  Also my mom would make Spam spread sandwiches; she'd run the Spam, some onion and green pepper through the food grinder -- they were great!

My dad was a big fan of sardines too but I avoided them like the plague.

I used to love calves liver, haven't had it in years.  I just had liverwurst the other day.  Loved sardines on crackers with a little mustard.  Spam? eh....a little bit is okay if it's cubed and put into something like scalloped potatoes.

Mom used to put chipped beef  (in the little jar) into a cream gravy over biscuts.

We must now heap abuse on ColonelCarrots for not liking bacon.  He's not even Jewish, so he has no excuse.

A combo I do not like, but would be heresy to say around here, is pizza and buffalo wings.

No I don't like bacon. That's my controversial food I don't like.

Colonel, turn in your chickens. No self-respecting Gentile could possibly dislike bacon.

You might be sick. I'd get it checked out. Maybe there's a blockage or something.

OH yes, liverwurst with a thick slice of onion and mustard.
.

Much depends on what our parents liked,  we grew up eating Their favorites and we had to learn to eat other things we never had as a kid.

Never had mushrooms as a kid, first time I ate them I had had 3 beers and they were good.

When I moved south was the introduction to Mustered greens , collards, Kale and poke salad.  I was acquainted with spinach and dander lion greens but I all for these foreign greens took some getting use to.

Much depended on how they were cooked the seasoning and prep.

I'm technically a Samaritan.

I don't like to eat pork unless I have no choice.

Also turkey bacon isn't bad. I just don't like to eat pork. Too fatty and greasy.

Off the top of my head?  PEAS . . . .  :panic:

Peas and Lima Beans are the two vegetables I don't like.
I've got to join the haters club for peas and lima beans. My mom ruined me forever by not letting me leave the table until I ate my peas and/or lima beans. There were times I stayed at the table for a couple of hours. I ended up swallowing them whole to avoid chewing them.

For 28 years I ate cucumbers and I HATE CUCUMBERS.  I didn't want to hurt my husband's feelings because he planted them every year.  After I told him he quit planting and buying them.

Recently on a dinner out I finally broke down and told him I don't like shrimp. I don't HATE shrimp, I just don't care for them.

He said he is learning things about me he never knew.  Uh Huh.

No to all beans but green beans and wax beans. No peas except frozen ones. Kale, kole rabe, collard greens... yuk.

Bananas are nasty and not good for you.

No to liver, but yes to liverwurst - agree on the onion, stick to the roof of your mouth white bread or rye, and lots of mayonnaise. And I really like liver pate with cracked mustard and baby sweet pickles.

Not just no, but hell no to heart, brains, tongue, tripe, feet, nose, toes or whatever....

Sea, you don't like butter?   :???:   I gave it up for 2 years once, during a low fat kick, then I gave up on that restriction.  I love butter, and weigh the same.

I don't get all the cucumber hate here.  It's just a cool crisp salad ingredient.  No sharp bitter taste, or slimy texture.

Shrimp.  I do not like it hot at all, reminds me of a big cooked worm.  However, I like it cold, with the cocktail sauce.  Weird?

Mr. Mannn, I used to swallow the peas like pills as well.  Not a pleasant dinner, is it?  Why did our mothers do this?  I guess it was a battle of the wills, but when you end up hating vegetables because of it, that's a bad thing for your kid.

It's odd how sometimes it works, vis a vis growing up and having to eat a certain food.

I remember absolutely hating "gravy" but when Dad called it "meat juice" I was ALL OVER that stuff.

Mushrooms - couldn't stand the thought of those things as a kid, but today? A wonderful flavor. My sister won't eat a mushroom if you packed it in gold leaf and told her she'd live for 500 years if she ate it. Ditto with most vegetables. And her kids? They're the same way. They won't eat peas or broccoli or even romaine lettuce.

Will somebody please tell me what possible nutritional value that iceberg lettuce has? It's about 96% water. If you're gonna eat lettuce, go dark.  :naughty:

For me, there isn't a single fruit or veggie, I cannot find a way to enjoy.

A lot of the people around here that go gigging for frogs just chop off their back legs, and let rest of the frog crawl around on their front legs until they die or get eaten.

When we go gigging and find any like that, we always chop off their heads.  I know they are just frogs, but I still think it's cruel to let them suffer.

Oh, I can come up with a few other dishes, for cabbage.
Sweet and Sour Beef With Cabbage Soup
Smoked Sausage With Cabbage and Apples
Peanut, Carrot and Cabbage Slaw
Cabbage Wedges with Lime Dressing

I make a Seven Bean Salad, that rocks.
2 cans green beans
1 can wax beans
1 can red kidney beans
1 pinto beans or navy beans
1 black eyed peas
1 garbanzo beans
1 can baby lima beans
COMBINE MEANS IN A LARGE BOWL  ADD THE FOLLOWING:
1 med. diced onion
1/2 med. green pepper, diced
3/4 c. sugar
3/4 c. vinegar
1/2 c. salad oil
1 1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
REFRIGERATE AT LEAST 6 HOURS.  OVERNIGHT, EVEN BETTER,  WILL KEEP FOR A FEW WEEKS, IN THE FRIDGE.
Simple, fast and delicious.

I make the same bean salad minus the pinto and black eyed peas.

I also love cabbage in lots of things.  I put cabbage wedges in my stews and shreded in my soups.

I also use a lot of cabbage when I make my version of chow mein.

Green onions, cabbage, celery, mushrooms, pea pods, water chestnuts and bean sprouts stir fried, then add meat (whatever you like) and a little corn starch mixed with a little stock and soy sauce.  Heat through and serve over rice or noodles. Yum.  Better than anything you can get in a restaurant.

The secret is to have everything pre-chopped and only cook til tender crisp.  I start with the more dense vegetables, like the celery, and add the bean sprouts last.  I don't really want them cooked too much.

I tried a "breakfast sandwich" at Subway recently.  It was awful.  A pre-cooked disc of scrambled "egg" was the only breakfast-y part of the entire sandwich and I regretted ordering it almost immediately.

Much better to eat the real thing! All that so called healty, fat free, lo-cal, lite, etc are ridiculously full of carbs. I've turned into a label reader on a lot of things, and some of those healthy dinner things have 75 or more carbs in them!!

Yep. The worst part of the burger is the bun.

Protein burns fat. Carbs are sugar, even if they start out as a starch.... and so much harder to burn up.

I'm just going to put this un-rec in this thread.  I was at the grocery store, committing the mistake of Shopping While Hungry, and made an impulse purchase.  It was Tai Pei frozen General Tso's chicken, and a separate chicken fried rice.  They come in little Chinese food boxes.

They.  Were.  Awful.  What extremely scant chicken there was, was rubbery.  The rice was gummy and the vegetables were mushy.  Worst of all, peas littered the whole thing.  Utterly tasteless.

In other words, don't waste your money.  If I'd wanted a cup of rice, I'da made it myself for 5 cents.

I can't think of the brand name now (and nadining ain't helping me) but I always buy a large count box (40 I think) of chicken spring rolls at BJs (cue jokes . . .).  They're great in the toaster oven. Of course with a 17 year old boy around, they don't last long!

No, not Lean Cuisine but I have seen them in smaller boxes in the frozen food aisles in ShopRite, Acme, etc, near where the pot stickers, and other won ton type items -- just can't remember the brand right now.  I still have to get the large, "economy-sized" items due to the aforementioned teenage boy!  :-)

I can't even imagine how many Lean Cuisines he'd go through at a single setting!  :panic:

How about Minh?  Schwan's company makes them.  Sam's carries those, and I bought a box.  Pretty good if you do not microwave.

Gastronomically, this place works for me:

Mainely Meat (http://mainelymeatbbq.homestead.com/MAINELY-MEAT-ON-KNOX-ROAD.html)

And in Bah Hahbah, this was very, very nice:

Ben and Bill's (http://www.benandbills.com/index2.html)

I did a lot of hiking to work off some -- not all -- of that poundage that I accrued.  :p

BFF and I went to Ben & Bill's when we were up there, too. Thought I'd died and gone to heaven...

There was a place on the water... it was on the left as you went into town from the Holiday Inn (where we stayed).. it had a deck that looked out over the docks where the lobstermen came in, but I can't remember the name of it. Had the most awesome lobstah rolls.

We were trying to find flights up there before the end of summer to go visit her sister, who has a summer home in Calais... but we can't find anything remotely reasonable. Her sister lives outside of Tampa and she can get these incredible deals on Allegiant for $59 each way back and forth to Bangor. It would cost us more than that just to PARK a car at our airport for a week!! Forget flying anywhere for a reasonable price. :censored:

We drove almost 4,200 miles all told. I have the receipts for gas, but I'm too frightened to look at them. I'm guessing somewhere around $400 for gas, to and from. Gawdawful.

We didn't spend a great deal of time in Bar Harbor as the house we rented was on the "quiet" side of Mt. Desert Island in Somesville.

The house we rented was built in the early 1800s and definitely had some age-related "issues." The well water was undrinkable and there was only a clawfoot tub and not a shower on the ground floor. (I went upstairs to take a shower -- can't stand baths.)

Saw a play called "Shirley Valentine" that was a hoot. Single-person cast, who did a fabulous job. I ain't much of a summer stock theater guy, but that performance was excellent.

The whole experience was nice, but the next time Mrs E wants to go someplace on the outer reaches of the planet like this, she can fly herself. I'm staying home with the dogs and the parrots.  :p

You sound like M and BFF's husband! We went up there a couple of years ago, for her niece's HS graduation, in a little bitty town about 2.5 hours into the center of Maine. We also did a bit of exploring. We flew into Bangor, went to Camden and stayed at the Whitehall Inn - a really cool place where the original Peyton Place movie was filmed and supposedly haunted. http://www.whitehall-inn.com/

After the graduation, we went to Bar Harbor and stayed there for a few days.

I think Maine is beautiful. I spent a summer there in college, at a very exclusive girls summer camp, as a waterfront instructor/counselor. The parents paid more for 8weeks of summer camp, per kid, than I did for a full year of college tuition, living in a dorm w 3 meals a day, books, and spending money!!!

We would really like to go back up there and go to her sister's. It's pretty close to the Canadian border, from what K has said. She bought this really old - like 100 yrs + - dilapitdated house, that she has been fixing up for the last couple of years. Her husband hates it up there, and will only go up once during the summer for a week or so, and it would be fun to have a "girl's week" of exploring.

So far, the cheapest we've been able to find a way there, has been well over $500 each, and with K driving down to Portand or to NH.... right now, it just doesn't fit into the budget, for either one of us.  :(

Jeff, those paper mills are the funkiest things on the planet, except for pig farms. Your nose has to be permanently burned out not to be affected by the funk in pig farms. But the paper mills absolutely reek -- no doubt.

Granted, the pig farms are also bad. And so are the cattle feed lots.

Speaking of cattle...remember the old Monfort of Colorado reefer semis full of beef? Hell, they named the left lane of the interstates, "The Monfort Lane" because they went so friggin' fast and passed everything on the road.

My fave part of Maine , is Boothbay habah . There's lot's to do and see...mY parents took us to a beautiful Inn, called the Albonegan. Located on it's own little island. Cute little shops, restaurants and such. Kennebunkeport is nice too. Cape Cod if beautiful as well. On Facebook, I have the Texas State Link, called I love Texas.  I am practically drooling. Big Dog was kind enough to share some pics of his home state, and of course Frank has lovely pics of the Sandhills...

Lobsters are often sold live to those who want them that way (ostensibly for later cooking) and then cooked/boiled along with the trimmings (drawn butter, lemon juice and whatever sides) in what's called a lobster pound.

Our first night in ME, the gang went to one of these in Southwest Harbor, ME, a very small town on Mt. Desert Island.

You line up and in front of you are salt water tanks with live lobsters congregated in them. Their claws (one for crushing and the other for slicing) are immobilized with rubber bands. You tell the guy what you're looking for and if it's lobster (usually about 1.5 lbs. in weight), he grabs one out of the tank and weighs it. You're charged by the weight of the bug.

Yes, that's right. Lobsters, like their cousins the crawfish, are bugs. Although the biology people will use a lofty name like "crustacean" when describing said bugs, do not be deceived. Those critters are bugs.

Then the guy takes that lobster, along with an ear of corn, and puts it in a mesh/rope bag, then puts it in line. Another guy will, in turn, take the individual orders and put them in a large steam vat.

You can't hear the lobster screaming in pain. But you can sense it.  :-)

Anyway, a couple minutes of that then they plate up the critter, along with the corn, you pay your money, and off you go to the outdoor picnic tables to eat your bug. And corn.

I saw one place where people had BYOB - essentially a box of wine.

The smell in that place was, not surprisingly, like fish.

Completely destroyed my appetite.     :puke:

I have an un-rec.  It's Tyson Herb-baked Chicken, in the lunch meat section.  I didn't look closely enough at it when I bought it.  It looks like what they did was, puree some "chicken" parts (like hotdog meat), added some herbs and other junk to the slop, formed it into a blob, and sliced it.  Absolutely execreble.  I fed the lot to the skunks in the woods.

Their Black Forest ham in similar packaging, however, is excellent.  I was fooled by association.

The fun part of getting a live lobster is bringing it home, cutting off the claw bands, place it on the floor to wander about driving the cats crazy while the water boils.

BTW one fall we got a very large fish tank for a salt water aquarium. Once set up we went to the supermarket and bought a small lobster to insure the expensive fish could live in it.   I named her Elvira and she survived until June when the water became too warm for her.   Very interesting behavior for something we knew little about.  Sad we had to turn her loose when she would not stop sheding. Lobsters eat their shell when they shed.

Over fed she would bury the not eaten under the sand, she was curious, would stand on her tail against the glass and check us out, at one time I put a bubblier at the bottom of the tank that annoyed her, she slid under it on her belly, stood up and popped the thing off the glass.

Made us wonder, that critter was not just a dinner but a thinking being.

So I go into the breakroom at work, and there's an opened bag of a snackfood lying on a table.  Curious, I tried one.  It was the worst thing ever.

They were "baked sweet potato chips."  I put one in my mouth and regretted it instantly.  When chewed, the consistency turned into kindergarten paste, and remains stuck in your teeth like any paste would.  The taste was both cloying and bitter.

These must have been from the school lunch collection we warehouse, and a case must have broken open or something and they were trying to get rid of it.  They had the mark of Michelle Obama all over them, being non-fat and gluten-free, and the kids were right:  They tasted like vomit.

My wife makes homemade sweet potato chips.  She slices them about 1/8 inch thick, sprinkles with cinnamon and then bakes them.

She makes them as a healthy treat for the dog and the dog likes them.
