Dumped Beagle
« on: July 06, 2021, 08:21:23 AM »
Through the "Next Door" app, I read about a beagle that had been dumped and was in the same spot waiting for its owner (who would never return, of course) for 4 days.

Several people stepped up and provided him food and water, including me and Mrs. E. The little guy was about a half mile from us, so it wasn't too far for us to go to see about him.

Frightened, scared, leery, and confused. He would not approach anyone, but we took our yellow lab Zoey with us and he was VERY interested in her. In about 30 minutes, he took a bit of hot dog out of Mrs. E's hand and he smelled up Zoey pretty well.

Went back the next morning and freshened his water and brought more food. Worked with him more to gain his trust and Mrs. E was actually able to pet his head.

She and Zoey went back a few hours after that, about noon yesterday, and lo and behold, she managed to get a loop leash around his neck and into the car. We brought him home and he fit right in with our pack of 3 dogs. He's pretty young, intact, and probably about 18 months old or so.

Will be taking him to the vet in about 2 hours for a routine checkup, especially for heartworm.

We will not keep him -- three dogs are enough for us, but we'll foster him until someone adopts him out or we can get him into a no-kill shelter.

People who dump animals deserve to be keelhauled, at least twice just to make sure.

Thanks, all. I just can't turn a blind eye to an animal, even though I know I can't save 'em all.

Vet report:

Heartworm - NEGATIVE. This is a big one. Treatment for HW can be very, very expensive. We've been down this path with two other fosters, one of which almost died from the treatment. He recovered and last we heard, is doing very well. We adopted Fred, the other dog treated for HW, and he had an easier time of it than Jack did.

Intestinal parasites - NEGATIVE.

Microchip - None present

'Nad report - he's still got his balls. Removing them costs $329 which is beyond our budget. Working a different angle and we might be able to get it done cheaper. This isn't a must-do right now anyway.

Approximate age - 16 months, per the vet. Weight ideal at 47.2 lbs.

Vaccinations - Rabies, Parvo, Lepto, Bortadella. Not given - Lyme disease and canine influenza.

This boy has been fed well but for some inexplicable reason, was dumped. Speaking of dump, he took a dump in the house yesterday but after keeping a much closer eye on him, his record has improved to 100% - he pees and poops outdoors.

HW, flea and tick preventative is UNGODLY expensive. We'll cover him for a couple months, but then whoever adopts him will need to shoulder it from that point on.

BTW, he's really big into frisbees and will even bring it back to you!  :lmao:

Eupher -

If you do still have him when his 'nads move higher on the priority list, message me and we'll help out, whether you've found a cheaper rate or not (especially if "not").

The missus and I help out where we can with special needs pups in our area, and while you aren't in our "AO", this little guy is definitely a worthy cause.

Any brush fires that crop up, let me know as well.

Thanks, D-Six. As it turns out, we made an appointment for him to go under the knife two weeks from tomorrow. There's an organization here called "Arkansans for Animals" and they offer residents of our county spay/neuter for only $50. We can manage that just fine.

Very much appreciate the generous offer!

Two more photos.

He's a very attentive, bright pooch. Learns fast. It took him about 3 seconds to learn "sit" though "down" is going to take a little more effort.

We'll continue working with him.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to back off from my earlier offer. My St. Bernard-Great Pyrenees has been really aggressive lately towards one of my other dogs even though both have been fixed. At this time, I don't think it would be a good idea to introduce another male into the pack; especially with the size difference for a beagle.

To give you an idea of his size, here he is sitting next to my 110 lbs. Rottweiler:

You're a good man, Charlie Brown!  Beagles are wonderful.

He's a great pup, but apart from fostering him for a while longer, we really can't adopt him. There are programs here in the South where, due to fairly strict spay/neutering programs in the North, there is a dearth of available dogs in the North. From what I gather, very few shelters or pounds up north.

Lots of dogs are shipped north through these programs to satisfy demand. Jeffrey could be headed in that direction. He's an ideal candidate - no illnesses, vaccinated, and he'll be 'nadless by the time he's ready to go to his forever home. We'll see.

Jeffrey had his nuts removed yesterday. Seems to be doing well, though we cannot allow him to run and play and otherwise be a normal dog.

Roughly 9 days of this.

Will probably need to get a cone of shame, but so far he's not been nuzzling and licking the area. I figure that'll start in a couple of days when the healing gets going.

Jeffrey was adopted today by a family with two 14-year-old twins, an 18-year-old, and a mother and father that had recently lost their own beagle mix, Roscoe.

Match made in heaven. Jeffrey is going to do fine there.  :cheersmate:
