I'm still waiting for them to tell me what "rights" I have via my marriage license that they can't get.
I can tell you at least one...you have the "right" to lose half the assets you brought into the marriage, if you're a Kansas resident. Your spouse's ex would have the right to take his/her half upon his/her death for the support of his/her children...even if all the assets belonged to you before the wedding.
My daughter had some money left her when her father died. If she marries, even WITH a pre-nup, there is a good chance the courts in Kansas will decide that, in the case of a divorce, her spouse "earned" the right to half of her father's estate simply by signing his name on the license. In fact, since Kansas recognizes common law marriage, he may "earn" the right to half of it if she just lives with him. It doesn't even require a specific length of time.
What they really want is something we can never give them...the reassurance that they're "normal." No matter how much they demand, we have no power to fill that empty space inside each one.
