Jury Recommends Sentence for Parkland School Shooter ...
« on: October 13, 2022, 01:09:44 PM »
... After Touring Grisly Crime Scene

The shooting happened in Feb. 2018. It's now Oct. 2022, damn near 5 years after the shootings. So much for "speedy trials."  :whatever:

Life in prison for the perp. That's it. No death penalty, unless the judge rejects the jury's recommendation. Lots of indicators that the perp (name purposely not used) studied Va Tech and Columbine shootings to maximize his "impact."

There is no Hell vicious enough for this punk.

Quote
Nikolas Cruz murdered 14 students and three teachers in a Florida school on Valentine’s Day, 2018. He later pleaded guilty to 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder.

More than four years after Cruz walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., and began firing indiscriminately, a jury of seven women and five men recommended that spend life in prison.

The sentencing trial took three months. The jurors voted for a life sentence on 15 of the 17 counts. Judge Elizabeth Scherer will make the final decision on Nov. 1.

Judge Scherer read that the jurors found that Cruz’s crimes were enough to justify the death penalty, but in many cases, they decided there were “mitigating circumstances” and thus decided on the life sentence.

Cruz’s defense attorneys argued for leniency due to the fact that Cruz’s natural mother was an alcoholic, crack-addicted prostitute and that her substance abuse affected his brain from an early age. However, as an infant, Cruz was adopted by a couple who provided a stable home for him.

FACT-O-RAMA! Jailhouse recordings of Cruz and a psychiatrist revealed he had been fantasizing about mass shootings for years before he went on his murderous rampage.

Jurists and reporters toured the section of the school where the shooting took place, which has been preserved as a crime scene. Valentine’s Day teddy bears still litter the floor. Class lessons are still written on the chalkboards. Pools of blood remain where students were killed. Bullet holes are still visible.

A window in a teacher’s lounge has six bullets in it. Next to it on the wall is a poster that reads, “Typical or Troubled? Notice: Notice if you are seeing troubling signs in a student. Talk: Talk with the student. Act: Share observations with school mental health staff. Changing a life’s course.”

Cruz turned down his right to tour the school.

FACT-O-RAMA! Cruz told a psychiatrist that he choose Valentine’s Day for his murderous shooting spree, “Because I thought no one would love me. I didn’t like Valentine’s Day and I wanted to ruin it for everyone.”

Cruz testified that he studied the school shootings at Virginia Tech and Columbine before planning his atrocities.

Former students who survived the killings told jurors that Cruz, in his six-minute shooting binge, circled back to finish off kids he had wounded.

Judge Scherer could decide on November 1 to sentence Cruz to death.

SCOOP: Parkland Juror Who Voted Against Death Penalty Wrote Note to Judge Denying She Made Up Mind Before Trial, Called Deliberations ‘Very Tense’
https://www.mediaite.com/crime/scoop-parkland-juror-who-voted-against-death-penalty-wrote-note-to-judge-denying-she-made-up-mind-before-trial/

Quote
The jury in the Parkland school shooting case shocked many observers — and outraged the victims’ families — when they issued a recommendation of life in prison without the possibility of parole, forgoing the death penalty for the shooter who killed 17 people and wounded 17 more. A note from one of the jurors that was submitted to the judge reveals some of the tension behind the scenes in the deliberation room, including a denial that she made up her mind before the trial to oppose a death sentence.

Nikolas Cruz was 19 years old on February 14, 2018 when he brought an AR-15 style rifle and multiple magazines onto campus to commit the deadliest shooting at a U.S. high school. [In accordance with the wishes expressed by numerous family members of the victims to not promote the shooter, that is the last time I will mention his name.]

The 17 people whose names should be remembered are, in alphabetical order, 14-year-old student Alyssa Alhadeff, 35-year-old teacher Scott Beigel, 14-year-old student Martin Duque Anguiano, 17-year-old student Nicholas Dworet, 37-year-old assistant football coach Aaron Feis, 14-year-old student Jaime Guttenberg, 49-year-old athletic director Christopher Hixon, 15-year-old student Luke Hoyer, 14-year-old student Cara Loughran, 14-year-old student Gina Montalto, 17-year-old student Joaquin Oliver, 14-year-old student Alaina Petty, 18-year-old student Meadow Pollack, 17-year-old student Helena Ramsay, 14-year-old student Alexander Schachter, 16-year-old student Carmen Schentrup, and 15-year-old student Peter Wang.

The shooter, now 24 years old, confessed and pled guilty to 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder, so the trial only focused on the potential sentence. Under Florida law, first-degree murder has two possible penalties — the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole — and the jurors must be unanimous in order to recommend the death penalty, balancing between mitigating circumstances presented by the defense and aggravating factors presented by the prosecution.

Some jurors had their mind made up already.

^^^Not surprising given the amount of press and national attention.

As I see it, there's not too much difference between Life without the possibility of parole, and the death sentence.

If he's sentenced to die, most states (and I assume FL is one of those) will automatically appeal that sentence and the case drags on for at least 20 years, sometimes longer. Granted, by the time the murderer would get the needle, he'd be in his mid-40s, still a young man.

But like what happened to Jeffrey Dahmer, it wouldn't surprise me if he's beaten to death inside the prison shower. From what I gather, fellow inmates don't look kindly on violence perpetrated on children and tend to take matters into their own hands when they can.

If you want a long life just get convicted with a Death Penalty.  You will outlive the jury, the judge, the lawyers -- everyone.
