Auburn Man Facing Charges After Killing Bear In His Backyard
http://boston.cbslocal.com/2013/04/07/auburn-man-facing-charges-after-killing-bear-in-his-backyard/

Quote
Richard Ahlstrand told WBZ-TV he was stocking his bird feeder Friday night when a bear about seven feet tall and 300-to-400 pounds started chasing him.

That’s when he turned his shotgun on the bear.

“I didn’t have time to aim through the sights, but I aimed in the direction of the head on this thing and I pulled the trigger before it got to me.  It just dropped,” he said.

This is ludicrous! Liberalism run amok.  :argh:

Filling his bird feeder while carrying his shotgun, and loaded with something that would kill a bear?  Something about his story does not add up...

I'll side with the guy.  Bears in the neighborhood I live in will tear down bird feeders for food.  There's no crime in having bird feeders (yet) and the guy says he was out filling his feeders and thought he saw a bear the day before, that's why he carried the gun.  For me, I probably would have stopped feeding the birds until I was sure there were no bears around.

I'm not seeing anything unusual in the story except he's in the whacko state of Massachusetts and, being 76 years old, should know that his state if full of nuts who would rather he die than the bear and that guns are evil.

.

No!! He purposely, went out there at night, and baited her!!! Who puts birdfeed in the birdfeeder at night?? Fish and game in NH , anyway, tell you to bring in your birdfeeders at night, for that exact reason. My mom has to bring in the suet at night because of racoons.

76 year old man stands his ground against a 300 pound bear how many men or woman have ever seen a charging bear close up to live to tell the tale ?? Bears on a level ground can get up to 30 mph.  no problem catching someone on a bicycle or even a Moped.

Bears are not nice cuddly beasts, they are meat eaters, will eat most anything they can catch.    Get one that is ill or in pain, an abscessed tooth or some kind of mange, even the bufflow have to keep an eye on the youth if this bear is in their area.

Time of the year for bears starving to come out of hibernation and hungry as hell.

My question is if this had been a 76 year old Woman that killed the bear, would things be much different ??

I can't agree that he baited the bear and cannot be convinced otherwise.  Putting out birdseed when there are bears around was a dumb thing to do, tho.

He thought , he saw a bear the night before, eating the birdfeed, he goes out the next night and fills the birdfeeder, with a shotgun, no less.
The mother bear with her cubs feels threatened., and she goes on the defensive.
I don't know about where you live, but here, in the local news pamphlet, Fish and Game, warn people, that bears are coming out of hibernation, PLEASE bring your feeders in at night, and don't leave garbage barrels out. People do it anyway, and get into a snit, when the birdfeeder pole is mangled, and their garbage is strewn all over their yard...
THIS IS COMMON SENSE PEOPLE!!  Oh yeah I forgot.... :thatsright:

When any 4 legged or 2 legged varmint comes on the property I pay taxes on they had better act mighty respectfull be it any time of the day or night.

You see as long as there is no law against what I do, I should be able to do whatever I wish unthreatened no matter how strange or stupid  to others.

What ever the old fella was doing at any time of day or night he has the Right do so.

Getting so one has to watch what they do inside their own homes.

Vesta!! There is a big diference btween a bear and a human being. A humna being(some of us anyway) uses logic and common sense,. This mother bear was acting on instinct and protecting her little ones. She acts on natural instinct, she's hungry and and it is an easy meal for her, because she needs to feed her cubs. She doesn't know right from wrong, cause and effect.
This is not having rights to shoot at anything that looks at you crosseyed. Many animals that tend to be nocturnal probably cross through your yord for any number of reasons.
And bears are not maneating viscious animals.  The two years I lived at the cabin, not once did Rugaiya make any kind of move that was menacing towards me. I respected her as a mother, and kept my distance. I enoyed seeing them every spring and was astonished on how fast those cubs grew. Akbar(,The male cub) was bigger than his mum!!

Well now there are circumstances that call for taking precautions.

I see a bear or mountain lion at some time on my property, I will pull in the cats and kids, not tie out fluffy unsupervised.

There was the case of a father of 2-3 little kids that played in the back yard.  Father heard the little ones scream in fear ran out to see a bear charging the little ones .   He grabbed his weapon and shot the bear mere feet from his children.  He went to jail and charged with hunting out of season, having no hunting license and 2-3 other felony's.

Even the anti-gun folks went nuts, one time they agreed with the NRA that this was all BS.

One small town in N.H. took things into their own hands when a man was released from prison after 20+ years to come home and live with family still living there.    He had kidnapped, raped and murdered an 8 year old child from the town.  Her family still lived in the town.

Outrage from the citizens that this monster was back in town and likely to come into contact with the family of the dead child. Seems there was nothing the police or town could do about this, Monsters have rights too.

Quite a few citizens began to open carry, men, woman, grandparents,
people with no dog in the fight, just folks that knew a monster from the past had come to town.

Took about a year to get the poor Monster to move into another comunity most likely in another state.    Could be he now lives 2 floors up, drinking, dancing and having a party.

This old duffer knew there was a Monster on his property, he went about his life taking precautions and is now accused of baiting the Monster.---May as well accuse the parents of children of baiting a pedophile by allowing their  children play outside the house.

Vesta!!! A bear is not a monster!! He is an animal, relying on instinct. This idiot put birdfeed in a birdfeeder at night, knowing that bear probably come back that night. Itis like feeding a stray cat, who keeps coming back, then go into a snit because that cat bites a small child, and orders to have the cat put down. I have no clue, how you can compare an animal living in the wild to a convicted rapist!! :argh: :argh: :banghead:

Which is why they will charge and maim/kill your ass without blinking.  I love nature, I love animals, I don't kill things just because, but you can't tell me that no one has right to drop a charging bear if it means the difference between it or them.

Neither are sharks (so I've been told), but that doesn't stop them from killing people every year.

If it was me, I damned sure wouldn't be refilling the birdfeeders at night.  It'd be in the daytime, and I'd probably have my Python on my hip.

'Course, we don't have bears around here.  We do have deer in the neighborhood that are seen from time to time.

Yeah, pretty much.  If the bears are waking up, then it's best to not be at a disadvantage with no light so neither of you surprise one another.  And it wouldn't hurt to have something on you to drop a large, charging animal if necessary.

We have foxes, tons of them, and they can be a bit of a pain - especially after the ducklings are hatched.

That explains why the Bear Cavalry don't ride mopeds...

I can equate an angry bear with human monsters, I can equate a laid back so called tame bear with human Monsters.  Both act on impulse, and instinct.     To me bears and human Monsters are just gigantic Pit Bulls.

The man that raised tame bears for the movies for 40 years died when a well tamed bear he had raised from a cub for no reason went off on him.     Goggle bear attacks against humans and see just how horrific it can be.

There is a small amusement park up north that for at least 80 years has drawn in customers with their bear act.  There are perhaps 5-6 that are trained to ride bicycles and even eat icecream from a trainers mouth.

A good friend of mine was born and raised about a mile from the Park and tells of 3-4 times a year when some of the bears got loose in the spring and the police called everyone in the area to not let the kids outside ----Yippie, another day home from school.

There is no greater love between a mother and her child.

Do you think it would be an honor to have your cat eaten by an eagle?

Not only that but Papa bear will eat his cubs, reasons why the Momma bears live alone with the cubs.

Not just Bears but Deer and Moose run off the male to protect the species from interbreeding with their sisters or mother.

Protect who?? himself? He went out at night, and filled that feeder, with intentions to shoot a bear!! If he was smart, he would have waited till the next day to fill it, and if by chance, she did come back, she would have realised there was no food, and moved on....

And if a bear does start advancing, a person is supposed to fall to the ground and play dead.(Of course staying indoors, and respecting the bear's personal space, particularly, if she is with cubs, is a better idea) :whatever:

Bears have been known to climb into open windows, a full grown bear can rip off doors to cars, vans or homes if they wish.

You tube has a few videos of bears breaking into homes in the middle of the night and ripping off the doors to refrigs and with their sense of smell even freezers.

These suckers can swim for miles to get to land, hang out for awhile and wait for campers to paddle ashore to what they think is a deserted island only to go missing the next day.

There is a darn good reason the Indigenous people both loathed, feared and worshiped the bear.   These suckers are known for back tracking pray, smart, cunning and there are storeys from the news papers that will put a chill up your back.

Oh yes all the pictures of momma and baby bear is just half the story.   The you know where the term hoodlum comes from, these are teenage bears that run Armonk.

Bottom line , the guy is going to pay for killing that bear. Here in NY the law is that you can kill a bear if it is caught in the act of killing your farm animals. That is the only reason you can kill one other than during hunting season. If the bear is killing your children, no you can't kill it!! If the bear is a problem the DEC will give you rubber shotgun ammo to shoot it with. If that don't work they will trap it and relocate it. Been there done that. I am in the process of building an electric fence to keep them away form my rabbits and chickens. The bastards are like robins around here!! What they do to my rabbits would make Ptarmigan smile! They slit them down the middle turn them inside out and all I find is skin and feet! I hate them! If you ever skinned a fat ass slimy Catskill Mountain bear you will never want to do it again. They stink and you cant wash it off! Gross!
