Title: Hurricane Ian
Post by: SarasotaRepub on September 28, 2022, 01:37:18 AM
Having lived in Sarasota, FL for many years (in the past) I hope all the
people in the area take care and prep for the storm. It looks to be a big
one, larger than anything when I was there.

I was there for Charley in 2004 and that missed me but not by
much...

It looks to be a whopper, at least it seems to be moving fast. with all the rain we have had here in the last few weeks the ground is soaked which makes it easier for the wind to knock over trees.

Yeah, Ian is looking like one I definitely wouldn't try to ride out.  I've done 2 cat 2 hurricanes and those were intense enough for me.  Rita and Ike.  We were without power for 2 weeks on Rita and 1.5 weeks from Ike.

My brother-in-law and his wife have their home in Rotonda West, which is just north of Ft. Myer.

They are directly in Ian's path and up until last night, their preparations were solid. They are not evacuating. No issues so far other than a temporary power loss (though they have a generator).

But I'd be the first to say that the bulk of the storm will hit this morning. Let's see how it goes.

I have ridden out every storm since 1975 evacuation is not something I would ever consider. This one is going to be a tough one but I am prepared.

Had a light thunderstorm up here in Galt's Gulch that lasted for about 90 minutes. Supposed to have more rolling in this evening, so I guess that means we're in the "eye" of the storm for the moment.

Not especially impressed with Hurricane Ian thus far.

(Stay safe, all y'all in the path of this...) :cheers1:

My mother and sister are in Sarasota and they rode it out just fine. They have the
whole house GENERAC generator that I had put in way back before I got
married to SaintLouieWoman.

The GenSat is pretty old and it didn't fire up right away but my sis got it
to run on manual. Needs to be looked at for sure...

Sarasota had a 100mph gust but not near them. All the power is out around
them so it's a good thing she got it to run on manual.

Finally got some info back regarding my BIL and his wife, who are located in the Englewood area (south of Sarasota by about 45 minutes, and no more than a couple miles from the Gulf).

Ian's eye passed right over them, so they got hammered hard.

They are OK, but their house was damaged somewhat. No details other than part of their fence is missing, and several trees uprooted. If I were to guess, also based on some local information (but not from him), their lanai -- an attached structure to their house enclosing their pool -- may have either blown away or floated away. As I recall, it wasn't a very solid structure. Lots of screens and lightweight aluminum.

Mrs E and I may go down there to help clean up. They were prepared with the more-expensive impact-resistant doors and windows, but from the sound of things, there's a lot of work to do.

I am south of Daytona we had extensive flooding. I got 5” of water in my house. We got power back last night.
I hope fema comes through with some $$ as I don’t have flood insurance. I may have to sign up at the dump for a begathon
