My name is Ryan, but some know me as NonLiberalInOregon.
Might seem a contradiction, a conservative in the midst of such a liberal state, and make no mistake it is a fight on a day to day basis to hold on to my sanity among such liberal stupidity. That's why I tend to find places such as this a comforting safe haven amongst the madness of my daily residence.
About me...I'm a Constitutionalist, plain and simple. Fiscal conservative, social conservative and very dedicated to the cause of personal liberty.
Anyway...greetings from Oregon!

I am curious how you can be a Constitutionalist, and very dedicated to the cause of personal freedom - yet you are a social conservative. I say that only in the case of homosexuality. Looking at that from the libertarian lens, it is contradicting.
ETA: I am not a libertarian, and really care very little for social issues as a whole. They don't rate on my importance radar.

What the hell is this? Old home week?

Simply put, I tend to be a bit of a "Victorian" conservative in terms of homosexuality.
I was raised that what happens in the bedroom, stays in the bedroom. And it stays there because it's not something that everything wants to discuss or have flaunted in their faces.
Personal liberty is exactly that...personal. It does nott extend to forcing ones beliefs on sexual preference upon the masses by force or by any other means, from either side of the coin.

Welcome, NLIO!
I was stunned when Mrs E and I, in traversing your state in 2004, learned that state law prohibited us from pumping our own gas. And this was in the eastern portion of the state, where presumably some sanity remains.
First thing I thought of was, "Damn. The unions are here too." :p
At any rate, welcome, and I hope you enjoy what you see here!

Welcome Ryan!! Glad you made it! :cheersmate:

Tell that to the Emperor in 4 ABY when the Rebel Alliance blows up the second Death Star.

Tell that to the Emperor in 4 ABY when the Rebel Alliance blows up the second Death Star.
There was peace under the Empire. The Rebels caused the war and deaths of many. When the Empire took over it mainly affected the Jedi who take away many things from people; such as love, free will, and all emotions. The Dark Side believes in using unlimited power and emotion to overcome your enemy. Besides just because the Emperor and Darth Vader die doesn't mean its the end of the Empire. The Empire lives on long after they're dead. Its an immovable object. The Rebels have done basically... nothing.

It's extremely difficult to call the conditions under the Empire, "peace". What condition existed was tyranny. Dictatorship. I would question the "conservative credentials" of anyone who would side with the Empire, because of what the Empire stood for, and what it took away from it's citizens. Emperor Palpatine in many ways is no different that Chairman MaObama. Rule by executive order. Sidestep the process whenever you can. Consolidate power, while stripping it from the electorate. Oh, and let's not forget the Sith, and their affinity for slavery. Not exactly an ideal which coincides with traditional conservative beliefs.
As for your assertion to the longevity of the Empire, it's a stretch to say the Empire continued on, even after the death of the Emperor. What was left was the Imperial Remnant, which was the holdings of the Empire which the Rebels did not control, or were so remote, the Rebels didn't care about them. The fleet was scattered, under various commands until the emergence of Thrawn. Even Thrawn could not restore the Empire to the power and territory it formerly held under Palpatine, and the Remnant had no choice but to recognize the Republic upon it's reformation.
While the Rebels brought the war, their actions were no different than those of our Founding Fathers, rebelling against oppressive tyranny. Never forget that the Tree of Liberty must be replenished from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants...even in a galaxy far far away.
-
The Empire was only "tyranical" to the point of view of the rebels. The Empire did not have full control of the galaxy which fueled the fire of the Rebellion. The only reason the rebellion gained momentum was the use of the Death Star. Poor choices but every nation/empire makes them. It gained more momentum after it was used. Though the Empire should never have fallen. Technologically and Militarily it was superior. Emergency powers were bestowed on the then Chancellor Palpatine with the help of Naboo supporting the use of emergency powers. The Jedi didn't help then. In reality the Jedi are the cause of the war. They could've stopped him if they wanted to, but they're weak. The Rebellion would've never happened if they just tossed the Chancellor out after he went over his legal amount of terms. They welcomed the Empire really. It was a brilliant power play. You gotta admire that.

You cant really believe that ALL of Naboo supported giving Palpatine emergency powers. That action, is the sole responsibility of one idiotic, bumbling Gungan buffon who was too dumb to see he was being manipulated into making a big mistake, and fell right into the Sith Lord's trap.
Make no mistake, the Emergency Powers Act would not have come to pass, had it not been for the undue influence of the Sith on the Senate. That is hardly the act of a benevolent government / politician. Its an act of tyranny, plain and simple.
You do have a point, that the Senate made no move to remove Palpatine when he overstepped his bounds. But, once again, Sith influence may have played a role in preventing their action, and without the Jedi to assist them (because of Order 66) the non-Force users of the Senate would have no way to combat the influence of the Sith Lord.
