Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) wants the House to issue a formal reprimand — rather than the more serious censure — as his punishment for violating ethics rules.

Sources with knowledge of Rangel’s plans also said the 80-year-old New York Democrat will ask the House ethics committee, which found him guilty of 11 ethics violations Nov. 16, for permission to speak to the full House before any sanction is carried out. 

    These sources also noted that Rangel had signed an agreement in late July — which Republicans on the committee ultimately rejected — admitting to several ethics violations with reprimand as the punishment. That agreement was negotiated by Blake Chisam, chief counsel and staff director for the ethics committee, the sources said.

Only in this government can the guilty give his own sentence.  Not surprising just awful

I was flabbergasted to see Ben Stein give Rangel a pass on his crimes yesterday during the showing of See-B.S.'s Sunday Morning program.

During his 1-minute op-ed, he practically fell all over himself in fellating Rangel's war record.

Ben, you're a great guy and you look great in sneakers, but you just need to STFU on this one. Rangel has been in a powerful position for far too long and we all know what happens to people like that - they generally become corrupted.

Hi,

Rangel is the poster child for why folks think our government is beyond corrupt and arrogant.  Anything short of mandatory jail time for the SOB does nothing but reinforce that notion.

It is not Rangel who is the asshole, it is the folks doling out the punishment that have no balls to do what is right.

Duke Cunningham deserved what he got, Charlie Rangel deserves a hell of a lot worse than he's going to get.  Valor is a great thing, but although you'd never know it from the History Channel or any other American media, individual enemies have bravery and brains in about equal measure to our own guys.  It doesn't entitle you to a free pass on crime for the rest of your life.
