The Voter ID bill is dead, and your calls and emails made the difference!

Thanks largely to your work, the Voter ID bill (LB239) was stopped in the Nebraska unicameral. After a spirited debate that began Tuesday night, the bill fell three votes short of the 33 needed to move it forward and has been put aside for this year.

I headed down to the capitol before the debate and noticed that there was a change in tone among some legislators. While I won't name names, it's safe to say that your calls and emails helped them see that Nebraskans do not want or need laws that restrict access to voting.

You've heard about the damage this bill would do, how it would disenfranchise minority groups, seniors, students, and low-income voters. Needless to say, this is a victory. It reminds us that when concerned citizens come together, the legislature has no choice but to hear our voice.

I know that the primatives can't be understood but I really really don't get how the disenfranchise's anyone but the people who vote more than once and the dead voters.

It's a law that's needed, but generally vote fraud excepting in the bluest areas of Omaha isn't a problem in Nebraska.

It'll pass next year; usually filibustered bills do.

Hmm, I don't understand something. As many times as those jackasses claim "Stolen election!!! DUAC!!!! ELEVENTY!!!!"  :panic: ...you'd think they'd be all on board with requiring proof. I guess we get to continue stealing elections. Thanks Steve!  :cheersmate:

I'm very surprised Nebraskans put up such a stink over this bill! If a very conservative state has trouble with it, WTF are the states who really need this goin' to do???

Sessions of the unicameral are severely limited; this year they get to meet only 60 days (odd-numbered years, 90 days), and then they're sent packing back home.

The legislature's running out of time, with some important issues (tax cuts, what not) yet to be resolved.

A few of those 19 who voted to sustain the filibuster--it takes 33 to stop a filibuster--are machine Democrats from Omaha with a vested interest in manipulable vote-counts, but more of those 19 are senators who are aware of the clock (calendar), and since vote fraud isn't that big of a problem anyway, and want to hurry up and move on to the bigger issues.

It'll pass next year.

Can I just say that that sounds like a very sensible rule to me. Over here the media wail when Parliament has long recesses talking about politicians having 'long holidays' - it strikes me that if Parliament is meeting, then Parliament will pass laws, and as a general rule having fewer laws is a good thing.

Some years, they wrap up business 5-7 days early, and go home.

(This being a presidential election year, and with the tax-cut issues being so prominent, though, they'll probably hang around the full 60 days.)

That's right. We hear the socialist media crying about "gridlock", and a "do-nothing congress" as if that's a bad thing.

Fact is, with a very few exceptions, gridlock is best legislative result we can realistically expect.
