'Magic is over' for U.S., says French foreign minister
By Alison Smale Published: March 12, 2008

PARIS: Bernard Kouchner, the foreign minister of France and a longtime humanitarian, diplomatic and political activist on the international scene, says that whoever succeeds President George W. Bush may restore something of the United States' battered image and standing overseas, but that "the magic is over."

In a wide-ranging conversation with Roger Cohen of the International Herald Tribune at the launch of a Forum for New Diplomacy in Paris, Kouchner on Tuesday also held out the hope of talking with Hamas, the Palestinian faction that rules the Gaza Strip but has been ostracized by the West and by its Palestinian rival, Fatah, because it opposes peace talks with Israel and denies that Israel has a right to exist.

Asked whether the United States could repair the damage it has suffered to its reputation during the Bush presidency and especially since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, Kouchner replied, "It will never be as it was before."

Like I give a sh.. what the French foreign minister thinks.

However..

And sadly, many Americans have become disillusioned as well.

Not real ones.  :bird:

They are beginning to disappoint somewhat.  :(

Oh my.

Isn't this like, about the 408th time in our history, the "magic's been over"?

And France, whose appeal died somewhere around the turn of the TWENTIETH Century, is standing in judgment of our magic?

Like hell.

That is, until the Jihad comes to France, and they're begging yet again for the U.S. to rescue them once again. Then our image will be bright and shiny again.

God alone suffices.

I guess we could give Iraq back to Saddam. Oh, wait...

Yeah, the "magic is over" until they want our food, clothes, music, movies, technology, lifesaving drugs, disaster relief, and oh yeah, any spare cash we might have available.

Also, some military muscle when it's a situation to their advantage. :whatever:

Seriously, it's difficult to believe that we move people that much one way or another outside the Middle East. Are there really people sitting outside a cafe in Lyon going, "Mon Dieu! Zose naughty Americans, zey are at eet again!", or some Asmat tribesman in New Guinea beating the drum for war against the evil Bush?

Here's a newsflash for ya, DUmbasses: People have always had mixed feelings about the U.S. So many love our culture and standard of living and so many hate us for our strength, optimism and positive attitude, which they mistake for arrogance. It was that way 30 years ago when I was travelling around in the Navy and it doesn't seem to have changed much now, except maybe for the fact that many of the WWII generation of Europeans who loved us are dying off and being replaced with the socialist Eurotrash version of baby-boomers who are more prone to sneer.

And yet still they come.

As franksolich pointed out recently, governments can be counted on to do whatever is in their self interests, regardless of how the winds of popular opinion blow amongst their citizens regarding another country. Whether they "like" us or not has little to do with it.

I'd say I have to agree....the magic is over, but not because of Bush, but because of the liberal policies that have been eating away at out core for the past 50 years.

Our country is not what it used to be, and that saddens me, but it didn't happen in the past eight years.

Hell, just make it 500. Nice round number.

My father lives in France,. in a field, filled with shiny white crosses.  He has lived there since WW2.

France like most countries of the world always looks after its own best interests.

America on the other hand, always gives.  Whether it is trade agreements, or its money, or the blood of its youth.  America always gives.

It pains me to see a Frenchman with so little respect.

America will always be Magic.

Coming from a country that went from 7th to 17th in GDP/capita in less than 6 years.

When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Coming from a country that hasn't had any magic of its own since about the 17th century, I'm not too broken up about this. Best chicken breed I have is a breed that originated in France...coincidence? I think not.
