Obesity and are restaurants partly responsible for this?

So we went to IHOP the other day... yes my hubby likes their pancakes... and I remembered my mom mentioning that you could order from the senior menu

I went, ok... I am not eating as much as I used to...not since I started eating consciously.

So I ordered the Senior breakfast

So here is what it came with it

Hash browns, about four ounces of it (for the record enough carbs in one meal right there), two eggs, two slices of bacon, and I had a choice of two slices of toast or two pancakes

Given the size of their "normal" portions... this was down right "small"

So I turned to my husband and went... this is what an average hearty breakfast looked like thirty years ago. This was NOT a senior portion, but a regular portion at a restaurant. In fact, remove the pancakes and there you have it... what used to be normal.

Yes, been reeducating my eyes as to what a normal amount of food looks like

Suffice it to say that I could not finish this hearty breakfast, but over the years portion sizes have been super-sized and super, duper sized

And to prove my point that night I was watching bulging brides. Not because I want to make fun of these brides, but to see what these brides consider normal eating...

One of these women ate 13K calories in one seating (Chinese buffet), Another had 750 calories just for breakfast and 11K calories for dinner.

Here is the telling part, at no point did the dietitian try to change their impression of what a normal portion is, but even things like ... have half a bagel with peanut butter, coffee and a small piece of fruit for breakfast... that is a normal breakfast, but for these women (and they are not the exception) this is a very small amount of food. And I think restaurants have helped to skew what we think is normal, and given that many of us eat out far more often than we used to, we bring what we see at restaurants home, as a normal portion.

And I do blame restaurants partly for this problem. We have had portions grow... and I wonder if one of the solutions would be a massive, national reeducation campaign of what a portion looks like. Oh and add to that a massive PSA campaign on teaching people to LEAVE food behind. If you cannot finish it, try NOT to be part of the clean your plate club. Trust me, since I started doing that, I am not stuffed, and I can actually leave the table with a feeling of satiation, not the I can barely move, where is the couch, I am stuffed feeling.

For the moment you can reeducate your eyes, and once you do that... you will be amazed at the sizes of portions you are getting, like four or five carbs in one plate (rice), or the incredible amounts of fat that go with your meal. Once you learn how to do this you can do something about this, but in our national obesity crisis, I say restauranteurs were also partly responsible for this.

Oh and for the... salad healthy and nothing else crowd... start readying menus. You are in for a shock.

This one is easy:

a)Adjust the side dishes for one...usually you can get brocolli instead of rice, but people think they are getting ripped money wise to do that I think so they resist

b)Don't eat the whole plate of food!!!! Usually there are 2 to 3 portions there. Once you get used to eating properly, you usually will be unable to finish the whole plate of food anyway. I get an omelette at Bob Evans for example I can usually only eat the omelette..I give my kids the potatoes and the toast.

c)Don't eat out so much!!! Not only will YOU be in control of portion sizes then, but your budget will thank you.

d)Anything is fine in moderation and if you are active...so eat that yummy high carb dinner once a month and exercise and eat right the rest of the time.

This isn't rocket science folks.

When will they learn that just because it's on your plate doesn't mean you have to eat all of it! If you don't like 4 ounces of hash browns then just eat 3.

I dunno.

I'm a little dubious of the Zbigniew primitive's contention about someone eating "13,000" calories at a Chinese buffet in one sitting, and another "11,000" calories for dinner (where, the Zbigniew primitive doesn't specify).

That seems like an awful lot, even if just pure sugar.

I've never paid attention to calorie counts; if it rots the teeth, I've always avoided it.

That just seems damned near impossible, to eat that many calories.  In a day, maybe, but at one sitting?

Illumination appreciated.

You have to match your food intake to your level of activity. I know when I owned my dairy farm we ate HUGE breakfasts and nobody was fat. It's all a matter of moderstion and choosing the right food.

Restaurants started serving more because the public demanded it. I agree with the gist of the DUmmie post. We are, for the most part, not paying attention and overeating. But, we cannot lay the blame on the providers. It's called personal responsibility. I know, I know...... :-)

Oh and as for IHOP, this is available. Just sayin' :-)

http://www.ihop.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=31&Itemid=2
they have something called "IHOP for me" which is for people watching what they eat - (carbs 15g or fewer, fat 15g or fewer, calories under 600 - no word on sodium content but I'm sure it's there too).

Leave it to a DUmmie to take something meant to be a delightful diversion from everyday life and find something to complain about. I swear they could look at a rose bush in full bloom on a sunny day with that heady, musky smell one can only find in roses and complain about the heat and thorns. I'm the first to admit I'm an absolute fanatic when it comes to diet and exercise, but for cryin' out loud can't she just enjoy the moment? As long as she eats well the rest of the time the occasional splurge isn't going to hurt. If I go out for breakfast I'm having the cheesy meat omelet with all that artery clogging fat and cholesterol. When we go to dinner I'm having the steak and baked potato with sour cream and especially the magueritas...heck I might even have a piece of cheesecake for dessert. What an amazing assortment of miserable losers over there. Think I'm going to have another cup of coffee with half and half.

You know, the old saying about your rights ending at the the tip of my nose applies to big people on airlines. I am small build and I jut out forward, not sideways.  On more than one occasion I have sat next to people who literally flowed (even in exit rows) over onto my seat.  I ended up every time with a terrible backache from being shoved to the side.

The airlines should universally enforce the rule that Southwest set up (I don't know if they enforce it).  If you need a seatbelt extender, you pay for 2 seats.  I paid for my seat and I expect a full seat for the entire flight.  Don't pay for 1 and then steal 1/2 of mine.  I don't CARE if you have a glandular condition or were born "big boned."  That doesn't give you the right to steal  that which I paid good money for.

They automatically assume that it's okay to horn in on my territory because my butt doesn't take up the whole seat. But you know what? I paid for that whole seat dammit. Quit trying to poach half of it. And I have pissed off many flight attendants because I refuse to move. They generally try to accomodate folks when they can and I have been asked several times to sit in the sandwich seat between two fatties under the pretense that someone needs to sit closer to family or whatever. Nope. Not doing it. I'm not moving to another seat because I'm small and easier to encroach upon!!!!!!!!
I can see November 2 from my house!!!

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

This goes with the topic. It was posted on FR but I'm linking to the original.

I'm small too(5-7, 150-55 on a good day.) I always say others' health is none of my business, but when you're smashing me into my seat, it becomes my business.

Notice I didn't mention my weight?? It's a girl thing :-) Let's just say it's proportionate to my height. Tee hee!

Darlin' we've seen pictures of you.  You are hawt and you know it.

I can't in a bazillion years imagine you flowing over to my seat (well, in some fantasies but not Jabba the Hut style).

I dunno. I'm a little dubious of the Zbigniew primitive's contention about someone eating "13,000" calories at a Chinese buffet in one sitting, and another "11,000" calories for dinner (where, the Zbigniew primitive doesn't specify). llumination appreciated.

Here's a fat chick who eats 33,000 calories a day!:

There's a You-Tube video out there of this Japanese girl, I can't find it right now, who regularly eats some 15,000 calories of ice cream at a sitting, doesn't purge, yet is rail thin. Go figger'
And I'm not talking about "2 girls 1 Cup" either so don't go there people!  :-)
