What are you noticing at your food store?

Went to the supermarket twice in the past 5 days. Some stockouts on critical items, like TP, rubbing alcohol, and sanitizer. Very little peroxide. One lady complaining to a clerk that they should limit quantities because she's tired of stockouts. They had 3 sacks of whole wheat flour. Last weekend there were none. Seems they put out 3 a day? Does anyone really still buy white flour? No brown rice. No barley. This was Walmart.

I was in another national chain discount store, the phone rang at the checkout and the clerk answered. "No, we don't have any sanitizer, we're all out," she told the caller.

Also, what's up with margarines and butter? Time was I could find many choices of blends, olive & butter, canola & butter, multi, heart health, stick. Now at Walmart there's about 3 linear feet of shelf space and only a handful of products, plus butter. Many slots are empty. In the discount store, only 3 or 4 items! In a regional chain they had 3 times what Walmart had.

Also the price of cooking oils has gone up quite a bit over the last year. Maybe that's the margarine/butter issue, dwindling supply. I almost spring for 3 Liters of olive oil, but how can you use that much?

Is the economy so screwed up that we can't produce enough for preppers to hoard? Or is this the impact on farmers from Trump policies?

Cool story bro.

:thatsright: How can someone older than age 10 not realize that companies and supermarkets do not keep vast warehouses full of idle stock? :thatsright: Companies produce what they know they can sell in a reasonable time, and supermarkets stock their warehouse to a similar degree. :banghead: Because idle stock is money tied up and unusable. :banghead: And commodities like hand sanitizer or butter or margarine have expiration dates (expired stock = wasted $$!). :banghead:

Can't say as I've ever been in a national chain grocery/produce type store, where the person running the cash register was also answering the phone.  Maybe it's just me.

Most of the phones at a checkout are connected to the intercom system only.

These DUmmies are clueless about how businesses operate. Walmart and other large stores on demand delivery to limit the stock on hand.

What did I notice?

Nothing.  I forgot to remember about the virus.  And nothing inside reminded me of stocking-up on anything.  Though I did wonder what the store was going to with their large display of weird Hershey/Starbucks Easter-baskets that nobody seemed to be putting a dent in.

What are you noticing at your food store?

You still need a mark5 gas mask to go into the men's room
The shopping cart has squeaky wheels and pulls to the left.
A woman whose stretch pants were stretched so tight over her 48" ass you could read the label that said 48XXXXXL and if she farted she would have blown her sneakers off.

Other than that is is bidness as usual. :-) :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :whistling: :whistling: :whistling:

Toilet paper is out of stock everywhere. Bottled water aisles are also looking pretty bare.

I also noticed that the Walmart I sometimes go to on the North side of Milwaukee was pretty busy for 6 AM. Normally there is just people stopping in on their way to work or or their way home. This morning there were families shopping there, at 6 AM.

I could not tell if everyone was panic shopping but the store was very busy.

That's what I expect to encounter in a few minutes.  Busyness and bustle...  I doubt the store is actually out of the smattering of stuff on my list.  I don't need to stock-up.

Back in my day, the only panic buying that took place was when the bartender yelled “Last call!!”

>bucolic_frolic (16,034 posts)  What are you noticing at your food store?

When the Isopropyl and AloaVera ran out the tweakers started draining radiators in the parking lot to collect their sterile seed.

As the paper products vaporized, I saw the choppers cutting down the Nursery trees and surrounding trees.  For those that missed out on bleach to purify it, they hit the Pool Section for Sodium Hypochlorite to make their own.

Next was the Beer and Wine section to go dry...they hit the corn, sugar and yeast isles...already empty so they went for the
canned whipped cream for the NO2 they knew was inside...but it was gone.  The sniffers went for the Toluene in the paint section
and got forwarded to the Glue section...which was dry.   The Gold and Silver paint spray section was full but no plastic huffing
bags were to be found...and paper was outlawed.

Looks like sober times for DUmmys.

Local Walmart was completely out of toilet paper, paper towels, bleach, antibacterial soaps and EGGS.

Plenty of bread, milk and other food. Although the canned soups, stews and chili were not fully stocked.

We stopped by a smaller chain store Save-a-lot and they had plenty of eggs, toilet paper and paper towels, (store brand).

The MSM is fueling this panic just to hurt Trump. The left doesn't care if people die as long as they get control.

This is gonna be a miserable next couple of months. We dont have toilet paper in the trucks but it's going to be some long days to restock all those empty shelves. A brand new family dollar usually takes 6000+ pounds to be ready for a grand opening.  Imagine that x 100s

On the other side of the coin, now that everyone has stocked up with a month of stuff, they won't need to go back to the stores to resupply for a few weeks,  letting people like me who didn't panic shop continue to exist at a relaxed pre covid19 pace

Our local Target had no TP. OTOH the Lucky (large-ish regional chain) did, including our preferred brand. We bought what we needed, not panic/hoarding quantities.

No tp at Walmart today. No water, paper towels, ziplocs, ramen, and pretty much all the other unhealthy food.  Though plenty of meats, fresh fruit and veggies.

It would be cheaper to buy copies of Hillary's book in the sale bin for <$1.00 and use that in place of TP.  :-)
