Germany’s Der Spiegel Says Reporter Made Up Facts

BERLIN—Europe faces its largest journalistic scandal in years after Der Spiegel, the continent’s biggest-selling news magazine, said one of its star reporters fabricated facts in his articles for years.

The magazine’s disclosure, which came after a colleague raised concerns about a recent piece on supporters of President Trump in rural America, was made as Europe’s established media faces attacks by populist forces at home and abroad.

Claas Relotius, an award-winning journalist, resigned from the magazine last week after admitting to making up parts of his reporting in the past decade, Der Spiegel said late Wednesday.

Der Spiegel is fake news like CNN or New York Times. More proof of fake news.

What it really means is journalism as a craft, discipline, profession with strong ethics and principles often plays second fiddle to the bottom line -- sensationalist headlines and articles sell.

The truth often does not sell.

It's unfair to use a broad brush to paint all of anything a certain color, but I well remember hearing in HS history classes about the practice of "yellow journalism" during the turn of the last century and I'm reminded that some things just don't change.

Der Spiegel Reporter Was a Rotten Apple, and CNN Went Bananas for Him (https://pjmedia.com/trending/der-spiegel-reporter-was-a-rotten-apple-and-cnn-went-bananas-for-him/)

Quote
To give you an idea of the depth of Relotius's fraud, two residents of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, have catalogued the many lies he wrote about their little town in just one of his stories. He made up people who don't exist, invented quotes nobody ever said, and concocted numerous other details out of thin air. He even claimed that the town's movie theater was still playing American Sniper two years after it was released, as evidence of their supposedly backward, Trumpian nature. It was a complete lie.

The question isn't how this fraud got away with it for so long. The question is: How many more of these frauds are out there?

Journos want you to believe this is rare. They want you to think that fabulists like Stephen Glass and Jayson Blair and Claas Relotius are the exception, not the norm. But how would they know?

If a reporter decides he needs a memorable quote to spice up a story about people who live hundreds or thousands of miles away from his publisher, what's to stop him from just making something up? If it confirms the prejudices of the audience, if it's too good to check, how likely is it that anybody's going to check?

And if he gets away with it, what's to stop him from doing it again? ...

According to Der Spiegel, approximately 1/4 of this character's "work" is suspected of being at least partly fabricated, currently. As Jim Treacher suggests, once this can of poisonous worms has been shown to have been opened in prominent places, questions like, "How many 'reporters' do this?" "How often?" "At how many and what 'news' outlets?" scream for answers.

Well, this certainly qualifies him to be DNC Chair, like Donna Brazile.

They do have a preference for lying shit-weasels.

All of them

As late as  the late 90s I might have said something about a moderate number of grossly biased reporters bringing disrepute on the majority of decent ones. After the MSM's reflexive hostility toward GWB and lap-dogging BHO, no longer. I think most of the decent ones are exiled in small market and local news outlets. And with the very modest restraints of decent people gone, the partisan crazies have gone hog-wild after DJT.

The title is an understatement; he basically fabricated entire stories and people in them. Now I'm hearing he could face embezzlement charges as well.

Oh yeah, and he was CNN's "Journalist of the Year" once.  :lmao:
