DUmmies and economic sense: the twain shall never meet.

Shouldn't raising the minimum wage be the "fiscally conservative" thing to do?

I mean after all, all the GOP does is cry about Fed spending. Wouldn't raising the minimum wage to $10/hr+ help people possibly need less Govt. assistance?

For example: If someone who makes $7.25/hr yet is subsidized by the Govt for food-stamps etc. makes $10/hr for a 40/hr work-week that would equal about an extra $100/wk in their paycheck, which in turn may make them not need to rely on Fed assistance as much. They may be able to drop food-stamps due to the extra $100/wk for groceries. That would lessen the burden on the FedGov.

Or does corporations having the ability to do whatever the f**k they want & not be told what to do trump their desire to actually curb Federal spending?

If you can't afford to pay your workers a somewhat livable wage than you shouldn't be in business to begin with, or you shouldn't be making the profits your making on the backs of paying your employees shitty wages and having the FedGov subsidize the rest. All that's doing is making the rich richer with profits, but socializing the losses.

Raising the minimum wage would drive up unemployment, it has happened every single time and it takes years for the economy to recover from it.  Of course the hardest hit are young people with young blacks bearing the brunt of it.  Why do liberals hate young people and more specifically young black people?

Republicans wouldn't support it because it gives more wealth to the poor-middle class. A higher minimum wage means lower profits for the corporations and less money in the hands of the CEO's. This is obviously antithetical to the G.O.P's "Corporations First" agenda. You know, since corporations are people, my friend.

Yes, because the reason someone goes into business is to make sure their employees get a living wage.  I'm pretty sure it's in the Constitution, or at least should be.

Minimum wage jobs aren't meant to LIVE on.  If you are living on a minimum wage job you need to question the way your life is going (unless it is a temporary fix because you lost your job).

Yeah because all of those fast food joints in the mall food court expect 35 year old people with kids to work there instead of 17 year old high school kids.

Why don't we raise the min wage so high that everyone will make a million dollars a year? We all would be rich then, right?  :rotf:
I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

Of course all unions, even public sector ones, would have their current wage structures grandfathered in, and would always be bound by  contractual agreements.

Man, this is a refrain I get tired of hearing- "raise the minimum wage and all problems will be solved."

I honestly wonder if any of the posters at DU have ever run a business or even worked at any kind of business.  I'm not an economic wizard by any stretch of the imagination but I have worked at companies as they've dealt with a raise in the minimum wage.  They either lay off people and make do with a smaller staff (unemployment increase), or they raise the cost of the goods or services they provide to cover the increased wage, and so now while the minimum wage workers are making more, they are also paying more for cost of living.

Simplistic view, I know, but these guys can't even seem to comprehend simple.

Have you lurked here a while before signing up?

If not, you would be surprised.

Not only do they want a $20 minimum wage ($10 is just the camel's nose) they want retirement lowered to 50 and lifetime full scholarships to go with their free healthcare.

No...I'm not making this up.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

Every place I ever worked you started at or a little above minimum wage and worked your way up. DUmmies know that they are going to "Piss" away that job, aren't staying long enough to get a raise or they ain't going to work so that they move up. So the only way for them to make more money is for the government to require their employer to pay them more.

Boortz was talking about this yesterday.  Jesse Jackson Jr. is the sponsor of a bill that would raise the national minimum wage.  He says it would "create jobs."  He doesn't say exactly how.

JJJr said that the increase will "help meet your car note, your rent, feed your children."  Boortz pointed out that if you are capable of only working at minimum wage level, you have no business having a car note, or having children.
