Is DU inside a bubble?
Is our view of reality distorted by our preconceptions?
Do we have an unrealistic picture of what the American people really want?
I don't think so!
I believe that the fault is ours and ours alone. In this era of mass marketing we at fault for our lack of focus, message discipline and education of the public. We roll over and let the Republicans frame the issues, and call the shots at every turn. Democrats are weak, lilly-livered cowards, and the Republicans know it. They know perfectly well that they can wipe their muddy boots on our faces and we won't complain. We are probably getting the very ass-kicking we deserve!
They say that in the long run the people gets the government they deserve. I guess that the Democratic party is getting the results they deserve.
Your problem, DU, is you completely misunderstand the character of America. You're so busy throwing around phrases like "voting against their own interest" (what you REALLY mean is voting against YOUR interests) that you don't realize the majority of the country isn't like you. Even people who aren't political junkies and many of those caught up in that whole "hope & change" bullshit have an inherent understanding of American exceptionalism. Americans love hard work...I don't feel like getting up everyday and walking fence lines, cleaning coops, processing meat birds, etc. but when all is said and done, I love seeing what I've accomplished and take pride in what I do. And so do the majority of Americans, whether it's the kid working at his first job at the gas station or the 70 year old Walmart greeter who'd rather get out of the house and do something worthwhile with his time.
We're pround that we're not like everyone else (that's what it means to be exceptional), we don't want to be Greece or Spain or even England. We understand there aren't enough "rich" to pay for the freebies you think we're supposed to want because YOU think you're entitled to them. Good, Lord, you're even so ****ing ridiculous you think the rich have "stolen" from you. Eventually the majority of the burden will be borne by the middle class, anyway. We don't want to be so soft, weak and dependent that when the handouts finally break the back of the government all we can do is throw a tantrum in the street & set things on fire out of impotence and rage. It simply can't be any other way and anyone with half a brain can figure that out. We don't even want to be beholden to a big impersonal government that, as Thomas Jefferson said, "a government big enough to give you everything you need, is a government big enough to take away everything that you have..."
We've made that clear over and over again, the most recent example being the health care legislation. Poll after poll after poll shows 70% of the country is opposed to 0bamacare. Even while it was being written the leftist in the government had to pass it in the dead of night after many bribes (wonder if Stupak is really upset about voting for abortion). You guys even had a majority congress. Before the vote was taken, the country tried to speak out again by Scott Brown's election. But not one of the Dems in congress cared. Nancy Pelosi even tried to duplicate the gavel walk, except it wasn't a profound and moving moment, instead she looked like an arrogant hag. And the black congressmen who participated should be ashamed of themselves, sullying a memory of such a significant event. And the country still hates 0bamacare. Now it's gone to the Supreme Court and if their questions are any indication, they have the same objections to it that the rest of the country does.
When people object to some legislation 0bama proposes or his poll numbers are incredibly low, you cry racism. It's easier than accepting the truth that people simply don't want their country to fall off the cliff and embrace socialism. You can't accept that we like our independence. It has nothing to do with skin color...except who wants to be like the poor minorities on your inner city plantations who, for generations now, have forgotten how to take care of themselves. Everyone in the country understands how sad that is and those of us who still control our own lives don't want to end up that way. Granted, I'm surprised American had a "stupid" moment and elected a half time senator who hadn't even served a full term, completely unvetted and who thought he could make the oceans to recede. But I'm betting buyer's remorse is going to be bigger than any of us can imagine. Romney's proving to be much less wishy washy about taking the fight to 0bama and the boy king has no defense for where he's take the country.
While you guys sit there believing you're better than everyone else in this country, mocking our patriotism, our traditions, our love of our military, our flag, our symbols, our national anthem, our conservatism, I pity you. You're so insecure you can't handle it when other countries make fun of us. Mostly, they do it out of jealousy, there hasn't been a nation in the history of the world that has been this successful in this short amount of time...even 0bama, for all his trying, can't bring it to it's knees, you take it personally. The rest of us wear it as a badge of honor. You're so wrapped up in your "sameness" (which somehow you've twisted into thinking is progressive) and your deepseated insecurity because you aren't exactly like Europe, well some of it is sheer laziness, that you're truly incapable of seeing the beauty and opportunity this nation provides. Immigrants, well make that LEGAL immigrants, to this day come here with nothing just for the opportunity and the dream of America. But by all means, carry on...at least you're good for a laugh. Whiners!
