the primitives may rejoice: The Triumph of Virtue
« on: October 13, 2023, 05:19:50 PM »
On October 11, I underwent a whole-body scan, as Medicare was concerned I didn't seem to be dying quickly enough.  This was the second of two tests, the other one having been done about the first of the month.

God has altered me.  Where six years ago, nearly all the internal parts of me had been eroded, or at least touched, by Stage 4 cancer, there now remains not a trace of it.

All that is in there are what one might expect to find in a middle-class white male my age who'd been a heavy smoker.  All those injuries, but no cancer.

I am both surprised and humbled.

Thank you, Almighty and Merciful God, Who let this cup pass from me.

Good.
We need to keep you around a bit longer.

Ever the master of understatement, sir. I wholeheartedly concur with your sentiment however.

This is AMAZING news, Frank. I may have to make a quick recon of Skinner's Island just to plumb the depths of DUm'Rat apoplexy.

Enjoy every second of your new lease on life, my friend, just to spite the primitives who've been waiting all this time to gravedance beside your tombstone. :cheers1:

God works in His own way. Welcome back, Frank, as I hope you can even more quickly recover from all that stuff they've pumped into you over the past few years.

Yeah, dutch is 100% on point. God ain't done with you yet.

It's going to take a bit to get my muscular strength back, but taking it slow and hard ought to do the trick.  I lost a lot in this six-year battle.

I don't recall you being around during the scam that rocked the internet, Beth Ferrari's AndsyScam, but at the time were plenty of primitives who wished me ill, and looked forward to when the tables might be turned.

Because I killed [sic] Andy, they wished kharma to happen and well, I guess kharma happened.

In case anyone's forgotten, those of us advocating open and honest fund-raisers back in April 2005 had nothing but the noblest intentions in mind in setting up Andyscam, to struggle against the scam that rocked the internet.

But the primitives, on the other hand misinterpreted those pure and noble sentiments, thinking we--four from this side, and two from the late red round one's side--wanted to hound this poor sick man to death because he presented a threat to the Republican party in exposing our alleged voting fraud.

The primitives could be really stupid, and here Beth Ferrari was getting all set up to fleece them. Her fund-drive to heal the late red round one of pancreatic cancer had nothing to do with the late red round one, or pancreatic cancer.  It had everything to do with Beth scoring big so that she could divorce her husband Doug, whom she'd found tiresome, get her son out of San Quentin, pay all the back taxes on her mother's properties in San Francisco and out in the country, pay off her monstrous personal debts, and buy a few bales of marijuana with the change left over.

In their innocence, gullibility, stupidity, or naivete, the primitives were liable to fall for it, and that had to be stopped.

As the late red round one did die for reasons unconnected with decent and civilized people, the primitives were sure karma was going to get us. They ominously wished for long agonizing deaths for us, usually from cancer.

After about a year, we said, "Well, if this is karma, let's have more of it."

Not only did nothing bad seem to happen, but also a lot of good things. I lost track of the other five years ago, but last I heard, they were all flourishing and prospering.

I wasn't doing badly myself, but then in April 2017, I was unexpectedly diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the esophagus, and stage 4 cancer of the liver.

Well, yes, of course, that was very bad for me, but this was 2017, and Beth Ferrari's scam that rocked the internet had happened in.....2005.
If this was karma, it was sure was taking an awful long time to happen.

To keep as long story short, for seven months I was in chemotherapy. But since it seemed to be killing me, I gave it up and went into hospice, waiting to die.

Last March after six years in hospice, Medicare thought I was taking a suspiciously long time to die. Maybe I was cheating. But per their standard practices, they wanted to find out the "why" of it, and ordered a bunch of tests to be performed on me.

The tests recently being concluded, it was found there was not a trace of cancer in me any more. Not a speck, not a scintilla. The original diagnosis hadn't been wrong; at the time I was truly infested with cancer and dying from it.

I have no doubt the primitives are dancing with joy; franksolich lives.  I sound flippant about it, but at the same time I'm fully aware God could pull the carpet out from under me.  So one must remain humble and grateful.

Having some second-hand familiarity with hospice process, I know:

* Patients must qualify to be on hospice care; a doctor's good-faith written diagnosis that the patient has 6 or fewer months to live, regardless of medication or care for their disease, is required; obviously, there are records and tests underlying this diagnosis;

* There is a tiny minority of patients who outlive that 6 months diagnosis by a factor of years;

* Patients' attending physicians evaluate patients' condition regularly, including occasional face-to-face visits; nurses or aides visit the patient even more frequently;

* There is a process - exams, tests, conference of caregivers - by which patients can be determined to have improved to a degree that they no longer qualify for hospice care and coverage.

Speaking only to care administration, that is what frank has been living through the past 6 years. He knows this, painfully and obviously, but since DU-onlurkers may think frank's experiences :bouncy:-fiction, my point in the above is that hospice really does work as frank has described.

The other side of hospice care, in the US at least, is that patients and patients' families often delay learning about and starting hospice care so that many or most hospice patients die within a month, with many of those within a few hours or a couple of weeks. My MIL was on hospice care just 2 weeks, some 15 years ago.

When I was making arrangements for chemotherapy, the "macho" part of me took over. The oncologists said one treatment, one time a week.

I said no, I wanted this out of me. How about three treatments a week, each a double dose?

They looked at me as if I were Bozo from Outer Space. I pointed out I had a very strong body, and gave examples where I'd endured really violent, rough treatment, always with quick recovery. They were dubious, pointing out they had medical ethics and guidelines to follow, and they weren't willing to kill me. They did agree however to carefully watch and see if I could tolerate stronger doses.

I'm sure they did a little bit of that, but what happened in seven months of chemotherapy was that I had eleven sessions in those seven months, and was hospitalized eight times, twice for two full weeks. Chemotherapy is usually pretty rough for people, but in my case it seemed extraordinarily violent. Usually I was tossed into the hospital because of low or nonexistent white blood cells. Incessantly running bowels three times. One time, a heart-beat rate of 29. It was Hell, all of this farting, vomiting, bleeding, pissing, shitting. I counted myself lucky I lived alone; I would've been embarrassed if anyone had seen me.

Shortly before Christmas 2017, my sister and the county sheriff pleaded with the oncologists to cease the treatments; they were obviously killing me. The oncologists agreed; they were uncomfortable about how it was going, but pointed out that as a competent adult, I had total control over my treatment. I sensed this uncertainty on their part, and so finally agreed I would stop it, and go into hospice.

Some effects of chemotherapy still plague me today.

I think what happened was that the overdoses of chemicals, besides killing the healthy cells, killed the cancerous ones too.

I would do this again if I had to, but I would NOT recommend anybody else try it. I came to the edge of the abyss and pulled back at the last minute; I just can't trust anybody else to play it so closely and succeed.

Honest question here, no snark intended. Medicare ALLOWED you to stay in hospice for 6 YEARS? I have never, in my 30ish years of billing and working for a specialist with a lot of hospice patients, known that to happen. Did you fall through the cracks because you have to be recertified every 6 months?

Quote
No idea how that happened. Every six months I got a new piece of paper good for another six months.

I had no idea, myself, as to how that happened.

It must be pointed out that I do have a long history of "falling through the cracks" through no fault of my own.

Quote
I'm glad you are in remission. After I thought about it, it just struck me as odd because we will get people on hospice who are on dialysis and they get a year, maybe a year and a half on hospice and then it is discontinued when they don't die, but then usually reinstated later.

The primitives now see the formula to getting well if ill, and to a long and happy life, by following this example of franksolich:

1) be a nice guy, one of the nicest guys one can hope to meet
2) acknowledge God, either enthusiastically or grudgingly
3) vote straight Republican

Thanks to suggestions by Texacon here and blue over there, sometime in mid-November, about a month from now, we will begin accepting nominations for The Top Ten DUmmies of 2023.

I strongly urge this newest generation of primitives, many of them currently unknown and unnoticed, start rehearsing for possible places; Top Ten DUmmiehood is no small honor.

Offering an Emeritus DOTY to anybody but Omaha Steve - who's dying, doncha know - would be an insult to the very process. In fact; he probably needs elevation to the exalted rank of Moron Of The Millenium or some such...  :cheersmate:
