Hmmm...The Babe is long dead. Jordan? No. Gretzky? No. Brady? No.
Pele. Someone who nobody of consequence in America has talked about in a very long time, who played in a sport that essentially nobody of importance in America talks about beyond mocking it.
Been told since I was a child in the 1970's that soccer/futbol would be the most popular and dominant sport in the United States. Of course I know who Pele was and appreciate his accomplishments. However, the sport still ranks well behind the four major North American professional sports along with college football and basketball in popularity. Soccer has essentially a cult following, and if that is your cup of tea, so be it. Hey, I'm a big golf fan and many sports fans think that's an insignificant sport.
To answer that drunk Malaise, hyperbole much? I don't think the world is mourning. I'm sorry the gentleman died, but at age 82, it was probably his time.
And via Wikipedia (apologies because I'm not researching any further):
In June 2013, he was criticised in public opinion for his conservative views.[150][151] During the 2013 protests in Brazil, Pelé asked for people to "forget the demonstrations" and support the Brazil national team.[152]
