Title: Ladies, I need ideas
Post by: BEG on March 08, 2012, 05:19:41 PM
For my fireplace. I just sat the stuff on the mantel but I don't know what I should put on it. It looks blah and not interesting. I stare at it everyday and I have a block when it comes to ideas on how to decorate it. We also have massively tall walls in this room and I'm trying to think of ideas on how to make the ceiling appear a little lower and the room more intimate.  This room is very open to the kitchen and entry way.

Have you thought of a really cool mantel clock for the center? Something short enough to not block the mirror, maybe in a ebony or dark teak?

We have 10+ ft ceilings in our living room. I put up curtains, a bit over the top of the windows, and everyone who's been over says that it makes the room more cozy. Hope that helps some

Our ceiling is at least twice that high and we have plantation shutters. I'm kind of regretting putting shutters though out the whole house. I thought about putting custom curtains on the wall of windows from ceiling to floor in this room and I do think it would have made the room feel more cozy.

Ok, you are going to hate me, but I think the mirror is too big for the space. I know you've done the shutter thing too much...  So I'm needing a full length picture floor to ceiling along with a larger view of the room to work with ya here.  *mind gerbles spinning*  I just saw a bubble , frame/ mirror thing at bed bath and beyond, super cute for under $50. But I'm thinkin it hung on its side long insted of short and stubby would work to give you the depth and length your after to draw the eye up........ Or you could get creative and do your own art on a few long canvases with same length mirror in the middle.

The mirror is too big, I agree.  It isn't about the size of the mirror, more the shape.  You need something up there to warm up the space, something with more texture.  Maybe a painting, or a cool wall hanging.  I like the stuff on the mantel, it frames out what is above it nicely.

I should take a picture of the whole wall above the fireplace so you can get a look at the overwhelming amount of wall space above the fireplace. I agree that the mirror width wise is too large. I really wanted to put the shutters up there again but I couldn't use all 4 because it would be too large and I didn't want to "waste" one.

I'll take a picture when I get home on Sunday and post it so you guys can see just how much wall space I have to work with. I'm on my way to Dallas for a rheumatologist appointment (and getting my hair colored and cut).  It's my mom's birthday today too. I have a new rheumatologist in Austin but I'm still seeing my original doctor (who I have been with since I was diagnosed back in 1995). He knows me so well that I feel much more comfortable having him in the loop.

With it up there, it creates more "space". I agree a wall hanging would be better and you can use a color to "close in" the room.

Maybe you could get some old quilts or blankets to use as wall hanging. Depending on your style, you could use anything from a Star of David to old western style saddle blankets. Framed, unframed, there are so many possibilites.

I would ditch the mirror and put something up that fills the length.  I would also add flowers or something that adds color.  I think you need more color.  But, that's just me.  lol

Besides the opinions on the mirror (with which I agree), I think something taller to the left of the mantle might work to bring the eye downward less drastically than the TV, which is low.  It may make the wall less stark and tall.

I like a mirror over the fireplace, but I agree with the others, the one up there overpowers the fireplace.

I would put one up there that is the same width as the opening of the fireplace but tall.

Also, you need something over the tv to balance your wall. You have height to the right of the door, then something over the fireplace, but the eye drops down to the tv and makes the room look "heavy" to the right.

Since your clock is rounded, maybe an oblong mirror above the fireplace, and something in a round shape over the tv. Your picture under the clock is squared off as is the doorway, the mantle and the tv. With something rounded above each it would give the wall an arch-like appearance, and draw the eye my centrally to the wall.

I'd also add some of the rusty red that is in your rug, into the room. Doing so would bring out the color in the rug, and add some "pop" into the neutral. Tall candlesticks - of varied heighth -  on the mantle with candles the same color of red. ( I have some in black & antiqued silver that I got at Hobby Lobby several years ago that would be great. They don't still have the exact ones, but they do have similar ones still) Maybe some pillows on the couch in solids and patterns with red and whatever other color that is in the rug ( I can't see it well from this picture). Maybe add some olive-y green if it's in the rug too. Maybe some smaller pictures or some type of wall decor, that will have bits of the red, the green, along with black and neutrals. Those would be easy to find.

I have a tapestry that I need to take a picture of and measurements, see if it will work for you, it hangs on a wrought iron rod. If you want it, I will send it to you. It's a pretty floral in natural colors. I'll be back at the shop Mon or tues and send ya a pic.

Flowers (living) will brighten up and be a fragrant addition.
Use a tall vase to lift the blooms up to reflect in the ginormus mirror..

The mirror is kinda large, what about a oblong collage of your daughters beautiful pictures, or a western watercolor??

I love fresh flowers. We always had fresh flowers from our yard when we lived in CA (one of the few things I liked about living there).  That mirror really is ginormous. We have moved it twice, both times I found it hard to find a place for it.

What about in a hallway? Do you have a wall or a window over the tub in your bathroom? If's it's a wall, what about putting the mirror there? Or in your dining room? If you have a large wall in your dining room, put it there with a buffet under it. I found a neat one at a furniture outlet here, that is up on legs and the top is about 40" or so from the floor. It doesn't hold a lot, but the top is great!! I originally bought it for my foyer at my old house and had a mirror above it, now I have it in the eating area of my kitchen with a big piece of artwork above it.

I have a window over my tub but that would have been a great idea if I didn't. It would work in my dining room. I had it in my dining room n CA.

Right now I have a picture my husband's cousin painted in my dining room but the mirror would look nice there. You can see the painting here in this picture. I can put the painting upstairs in the game room.

Here is my dining room in Dallas with the painting.

Here is the first place I had the mirror when we lived in Dallas. You can barely see one of the shutters above the fireplace in the mirror.

Here you can see three of the shutters. I think I'm just going to use three shutters and put them on the fireplace (4 is too wide). I'm not going to sit them on the mantel like I did here, I'm going to hang them up a little.

Sorry I've been busy living... I like the idea of the shutters over the mantel. If you have to space them wide some nice tall iron candlesticks would look great, you could always change candle color and maybe some seasonal flower vines, if ya want the seasonal change thingy. I'm more simplistic, only because I don't want to clean it.

IMO, you need to "Texify" that spot above the fireplace.......
