Report: Uranium Stockpile Removed From Iraq in Secret U.S. Mission

The last major remnant of Saddam Hussein's nuclear program — a huge stockpile of concentrated natural uranium — reached a Canadian port Saturday to complete a secret U.S. operation that included a two-week airlift from Baghdad and a ship voyage crossing two oceans.

The removal of 550 metric tons of "yellowcake" — the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment — was a significant step toward closing the books on Saddam's nuclear legacy. It also brought relief to U.S. and Iraqi authorities who had worried the cache would reach insurgents or smugglers crossing to Iran to aid its nuclear ambitions.

What is now left is the final and complicated push to clean up the remaining radioactive debris at the former Tuwaitha nuclear complex about 12 miles (19 kilometers) south of Baghdad — using teams that include Iraqi experts recently trained in the Chernobyl fallout zone in Ukraine.

"Everyone is very happy to have this safely out of Iraq," said a senior U.S. official who outlined the nearly three-month operation to The Associated Press. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.

While yellowcake alone is not considered potent enough for a so-called "dirty bomb" — a conventional explosive that disperses radioactive material — it could stir widespread panic if incorporated in a blast. Yellowcake also can be enriched for use in reactors and, at higher levels, nuclear weapons using sophisticated equipment.

More proof that the liberation of Iraq was necessary.

exactly.  I just don't understand why the bush administration didn't defend it's actions as vigorously as it could after the 2004 elections.  maybe mccain would have a slightly easier task before him if that had happened.

exactly - why isnt Bush shouting this from the mountain tops? people have excoriated him in a HUGE way, and this would at least be somewhat of a victory for him.

I may be mistaken, but wasn't that yellow cake left over after the 1st Gulf War and under IAEE "supervision"?

Yes, it was, however, how much harassment did Saddam heap on the inspectors? Are these supervisors somehow NOT the same as international inspectors, you know, the guys he barred from some areas and expelled from Iraq?

Will this change the liberal mantra of, "No war for Oil" to "No War for Yellowcake".

NO WAR FOR:

Let nothing trouble you,
Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing;
God never changes.
Patience attains all that it strives for.
He who has God lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.

Operational security comes to mind.

There's a lot I don't like about President Bush; HIS understanding of OPSEC isn't one of them.  Too bad he couldn't/wouldn't enforce that policy effectively for the rest of his administration.

today i heard that Al Quaeda is just a tiny fraction of what it once was in Iraq... the US has all but won this one, and the media will not let the news out.

in fact, i heard an article that stated, "what if America won a war, and nobody knew about it?" which is a distinct chance at this point unless McCain or Bush decides to open his lips about it.

The difference, of course, with Saddam is that he had no plans for a nuclear power facility, buy he DID for a nucclear weapon. Remember, you only need fuel rode with 4-5% U-235 for a nuclear power plant, but 95% + for a nuclear bomb. So when you are refining past or planning to that 5%.......
