"Eight Below" (DVD), about eight Huskey sled dogs left in the Antartica over the winter to fend for themselves. A real tear jerker for us dog lovers.

Six survivors were finally rescued after almost 200 days.

The Dark Knight Rises, love that movie. Holy crap. When I saw it in theaters I have never been so excited over a movie before. Bane was amazing. They didn't make him seem like a giant idiot. Every time I watch I just get so excited.

Plus I learned how to do Bane's voice. I have this cup and I just do like his accent into it and its near perfect.

One of my largest clients is Digiboo (http://www.digiboo.com). I have one of the electronic Kiosk on my desk. I can download whatever movie I want. Every Friday I usually bring home 2 or 3 movies to play on the big screen for family night on Friday or Saturday nights. For those that travel Digiboo is expanding. Let me know if you see one of the kiosk, I'll give you a code for a free rental.

I believe it was. I'm so reminded of our late Bo, that we rescued after he was abandoned, struck by a car, and left for dead. A sweet gentle giant.

The last movie I watched in a theater was "Skyfall". Thought it was an excellent addition to the Bond gallery.

Last movies I watched on DVD, I recently rewatched "A Fistful of Dollars", "For A Few Dollars More" and "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly."

At home, Patriot Games.  We plan a soon follow-up with A Clear and Present Danger.

In theater, The Hobbit.

Had to stay in a motel last week and caught a Liam Neeson movie from just after the title (grr) to about 20 minutes in just before checkout.  Set in Berlin and involving mistaken identity, possibly amnesia.  Anybody know what I'm talking about, or whether it (continues to be) any good (after the first 20 minutes)?

"Taken" is where his daughter is kidnapped in Paris for the sex trade.  This one starts out with him and his wife checking into a Berlin hotel...then he has to go someplace in a taxi that crashes...he wakes up four days later and finds that another man has taken his identity and his wife is going along with it.

Moose came over this weekend. We watched Dredd. Sci-fi action movie, based on a British comic called 2000AD. It was really good. Sylvester Stallone made a stinkburger version back in the '90s, which is only good for sharpening my riffing skills.

I love Liam Neeson's acting so of course I liked the movie.  :-) I was a bit bored during parts, but there's a satisfying ending.

Saw "Oh Dark Thirty" tonight with Mrs E.

Based on what I've read, it was pretty accurate. A couple of fine points in question - having read Matt Bissonette's book (the SEAL who was there - not some jackwagon who "talked" to those who said they were there), at least part of the team flew back not on the stealth chopper but rather on a CH-46 or similar chopper. After all, Chalk 1 crashed and was deliberately destroyed before the team left the UBL compound.

I have it on my other computer, and will check later, but I thought a CH-46 did come at the end because there wasn't room for all of them?

I'm going on memory from having read Bisonnette's book, but I believe the CH-46 was part of the overall plan from the get-go. They lost the stealth chopper, but it wasn't a big deal from a transportation standpoint. Redundancy in planning and all that.

All choppers had to refuel in Pakistan, but that wasn't shown in the movie. The issue of the Paki Air Force intercepting them was very much an issue, so it was balls-to-the-wall in getting back across the A-stan border.

IT just has so many curious things. There are three space suits, red, yellow, and cyan,  but only two crew members awake and three in stasis. Then, suddenly, after Hal tries to kill him, David Bowman is wearing a green helmet that comes from nowhere.

Then, I forgot to notice if he is still wearing a green one when he is shutting down Hal.

Then, when he goes into the monolith there are those seven geometric shapes that are never explained.

And even though it seems like a giant pile of crap, I still like the movie.

Go figure.

Alas...

OK, here goes.

<Carl Sagan voice>

Billyuns and billyuns of yeers ago, billyuns and billyuns of light yeers away,

</Carl Sagan voice>

a civilization developed FTL flight and communications and began to explore the galaxy.  Eventually they found Earth, which was inhabited by various species, including an upright bipedal social group with potential to develop intelligence and, eventually, their own space flight etc.

This species, however, lacked three things, none of which were possible in the ordinary course of events without at least one of the others.  The proteins in meat necessary for brain development beyond their current level; the knowledge to use tools/weapons to obtain the meat; and the appetite to want to eat the meat.

The advanced civilization noted that one of at least two groups of this species had the best potential for taking advantage of any help given; this group had recently been chased away from "their" source of water by the other group, who (since they lacked weapons or the knowledge to use them)  used intimidation and numbers to accomplish the task.

The advanced civilization sent three devices into the Sol system.  One, placed near the cave that sheltered the "chosen tribe" of upright bipeds, which transmitted information to their brains (use tools to kill, eat the meat, it's yummy).  The second, buried Tycho crater on the Moon, when exposed to sunlight transmitted "they found me" toward Jupiter.  The third, in orbit around Jupiter, had two functions that we learn about in 2001 (two other functions are found in the sequel, 2010); Receive and relay "they found me" to the host civilization, and serve as a hyperspace portal to a location, possibly the host civilization's homeworld.

The bipeds learned to kill and eat meat, and simultaneously to use the weapons to retake "their" water hole.  The opposing group suffered one fatality, probably their leader, in this first of many human battles.  In an iconic sequence, the triumphant leader of the victorious group flings his bone-club into the air, and we jump-cut to Earth orbit in mid-1999 and see orbiting weapons platforms, a space station, and a commercial shuttle ("Pan Am").

The device in Tycho had been found and an excavation made around it.  Due to the length of lunar "night", the sun had not yet shone on it properly (apparently, directly overhead).  The head of the US space agency and others stations on the moon visited the device just at sunlight reached the proper point.  The device sends its signal; it was audible as a loud screech on the mens' spacesuit radios.  It was determined that the message was sent towards Jupiter.

Eighteen months later, in 2001, USS Discovery was en route to Jupiter to investigate.  Three scientists were put aboard in hibernation, while the pilot and copilot were conscious and kept unaware of the nature of the mission.  The on-board computer, which was either sentient or capable of simulating sentience (it could make autonomous decisions and operate the ship without human input) was aware of the true mission, but programmed not to reveal it to the conscious crew.  This created a logic fault in the computer, which attempted to kill the human crew; it succeeded in killing all but the pilot, who disconnected the higher logic functions and found the recorded mission briefing from the space agency head.

The pilot continued the mission, finding the third device in Jupiter orbit.  Its function as a hyperspace portal activated, and he was carried off to seemingly live the rest of his life in a bad copy of a luxury hotel suite.  He was apparently under observation, given the whispers and noises heard in this portion.  Eventually, seeing yet another of the rectangular devices at the foot of his "deathbed", he apparently dis-corporated and returned to Earth as a higher-order being (resembling an unborn baby), and as an observer.  There are mentions in the literature of his proceeding to detonate (harmlessly) the orbital weapons, but I don't see that in the film, nor is it mentioned in the sequel.

"TL/DR!!" Amirite?

Then, suddenly, after Hal tries to kill him, David Bowman is wearing a green helmet that comes from nowhere.

The green helmet was in the airlock.  We don't see him put it on, and the interior of the airlock is padded.  I assume a compartment with a padded cover containing supplies for a hasty evacuation, including at least one complete space-suit and helmet.

He continued to wear the helmet throughout the dectivation of HAL, as otherwise HAL could simply open all hatches and kill Bowman that way.

Ostensibly, it is a sop to the Anonymous/Occupy types but it just leaves one at the end thinking, "so?"

Watched the symbol laden Man Who Would Be King on Saturday night. 1975 starring Sean Connery, Michael Caine, and Christopher Plumber.

Smashing good adventure movie heavily textured with Masonic lore and symbolism which almost gets in the way of the story. Which was probably the point. Much better than Connery's other post-bond symbol-fest, Zardoz, which is most famous for Sean Connery wearing a red diaper.

One of the greatest bullshit lines in movie history:

"Yippee kigh-yay, mother****er" as McLain lights his Zippo and ignites jet fuel in a raging blizzard which results in, of course, a 747 jumbo jet being blown out of the sky by...

...jet fuel.

Saw "Identity Thief" a couple nights ago.

One of those "how much really nasty shit can happen to a poor schmuck who's simply trying to get his identity back" movies.

Seriously, the antagonist in this film - the fat girl (actress' name is Melissa McCarthy) - does a great job in showing her faux cruelty and hidden demons. It's worth a buck or two to see this film.

Tried to watch The Collection; I'm finding as I get older the gratuitous gore is just not my thing. I like horror, but gratuitous violence like Saw anymore is just--what's the point and it disturbs me even. Just don't care for it. That one got shut off btw.

Went to see " A Good Day to Die Hard" for Valentine's.

I liked it! Except there was not one "yippee kay yea...." in the whole movie.  :bawl:

Watched "Day and Knight" or is it the other way around? The one with Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise. Totally improbable, but the stunts were good and lots of chasin', fightin', shootin' going on. It was better than what I expected. On the other hand...compared with the other choices on tv the other night, it was outstanding.

We watched Breaking Dawn Pt 2.

I actually liked it. I think it was the humor thrown in. Besides, I liked watching Bella beating the shit out of Vamps, finally.

Oh, her (CGI) baby, what a creepy looking little shit.

That would be Batman Begins.

I watched the remake of Clash of the Titans on Tuesday. Interesting how they threw out almost all of the original myth. The first movie at least had some mythology. And Ray HarryHausen effects. Take that CGI!

Oh yeah, the remake has your lead ninja from Batman Begins once again out to destroy a city because of the sins of that city.

I don't know what the writer's intent was but I read a Larry Niven book once where a guy is frozen, woken up in the far future, ends up back at earth in an even farther future and there are these little sponges that seem to transport the waste to an 'instant elsewhere."

That is how I always saw the three seashells. The size is simply dependent on the size of the ass. Or so sussed I.

Saturday went to see Oz. I enjoyed it very much. I felt it was one of those family movies that wasn't overly sexualized.

Yesterday watched Anna Karenina which, I liked the staging and the music but it seemed about 30 minutes too long and I came to loathe the eponymous character by the end. I understand the movie is like the cliff notes of Tolstoy, though. So maybe Tolstoy had a point but the movie didn't have much of one, IMO.

I'll be reading/listening to the book when I finish Lord of the Rings.

I also watched the 1952 version staring Michael Renne when TCM had it's day of Les Mis last year, not a musical but very good. Fills in some gaps here and there while creating others filled in by the current musical version.

I loved Moonrise Kingdom -a nostalgic look of 1965 New England with the hidden imperfection of life exposed
The Magic of Belle Isle because it was about self-forgiveness and he's a writer too.
Jurassic Park because it was fun to see it on the big screen in 3D and I was surprised how much I missed from seeing it on TV.  I loved kick-ass movies too but they are just entertainment, and you I never think about them afterwards.

Choice was Hangover III or Now You See Me.

Based on Euph's comment regarding Now You See Me, which I told the others, we went to Hangover III.

We agreed son would pay for movie tickets, and we would pay for dinner. Even with "old people's discount" (as he told the person when he ordered the tickets -  :hammer: ) it was the same price as dinner for 4, not counting tip.

At least dinner was good.  :banghead:

I watched John Dies At the End on Netflix last night after finishing the novel a day or two ago.

While I had hoped for a Fight Club type movie that surpasses the source material what I got is a movie that represented some of the scenes in the book quite well in the first half but then rushed to get to a conclusion in the second half, again with some scenes represented verbatim from the book but a greater chunk excised.

I was even more disappointed to realize that the movie was directed by Don Coscarelli who did Phantasm back in the day. I don't know that Phantasm has aged particularly well but when I first saw it, it blew me away! And watching the movie I could see how David Wong's book was a literary version of Phantasm, yet wholly original at the same time.

And that is the failing of the movie, other than cramming a whole bunch of stuff that will probably leave people who haven't read the book completely mystified, is where it is true to the novel it fails to be wholly original and where it is wholly original it betrays the novel.

If you are a horror-comedy fan and haven't read the book and decide to give the movie a go, let me know what you think. I think the movie is worth watching if you are a genre fan and have Netflix. It has a few very nice set pieces and the first 15-30 minutes are very well done.

Last night watched Murder by Decree on Netflix from 1979 starring Christopher Plummer as Sherlock Holmes.

Interesting movie based loosely, one assumes, on Christopher Knight's 1975 book Jack The Ripper: The Final Solution.

I remember Christopher Plumber being on Good Morning America promoting the movie and showing the scene with the scarf but I never could remember which 1970s Sherlock Holmes movie it belonged to as I got older.

Edit: corrected Christopher Plummer's last name.

For Father's Day, I was treated to a family-friendly chick flick.

 :whatever:

We Bought a Zoo, with Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansen. He's a writer whose wife dies, and he buys a run-down animal park. She is the zookeeper. The menagerie includes a bipolar grizzly bear, an old tiger, and a drunken Scotsman.

It was the chickiest. Bleh.

I made up for it by going to the range, smoking a cigar, and watching Blazing Saddles this evening.

Watched "Oz, the Great and Powerful". It was fun, and definitely made to be seen in 3D. It was interesting they (Disney) treated it as a prequel.

For Father's Day, I was treated to a family-friendly chick flick.

Me too ! I watched it on the flight back from Hawaii. Also recently have seen large portions of "Hoax" with Richard Gere. I want to see the whole thing. It looks more than good enough to sit through.

I went to see the new Superman movie, Man of Steel, last night.  I liked it.  If I wanted to find something to complain about in it, it would be that they could have found someone better to play Lois Lane.  But other than that, very good.

Mrs E and I are completely disgusted with the offerings in our area -- Man of Steel and a whole collection of zombie crap being among that pile of dung that we're just not interested in -- so we rented "Argo" from a Red Box and watched it at home.

Excellent film. While the story is true, I wonder about some of the built-in drama at the end. Probably more of Hollyweird's creative "license" they take with these kinds of stories.

"Argo" beat out "Lincoln" for best film. And "Lincoln" was the film to beat this year.

Man of Steel. Great movie and Michael Shannon made a great General Zod.

Saw Monsters U and Man of Steel at the drive-in last night.

Monsters U. A fun kids' movie, which children of any age can enjoy. Red's 5 year old grandson had a great time, and told me that he and I must now watch Monsters, Inc. together. Fortunately, he has it on DVD.

Man of Steel. What I liked: Lots of action; Lois Lane has a nice ass; The Krypton part  was well-done, for the most part; Christopher Meloni's character (Col. Hardy) and performance; Antje Traue's character (Zod's subcommander) and performance; Lois Lane has a nice ass.  What I didn't like: A whole bunch of stuff that would be spoilers if I posted them; Departing from Superman canon in the most egregious way, and a huge related logical contradiction at the climax of the story; Poor character development; Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent- phoned in performance; Lawrence Fishburne, Jr. as Perry White- phoned in performance; Non-linear storytelling- it only works for Quentin Tarantino, and much of the time it doesn't work for him; Elements of the story which were derivative from non-Superman stories, where being derivative didn't make sense (example: Jor-El's death- this is not a spoiler, since we all know Jor-El dies in the Superman origin story).

PM me for more, so I don't spoil it for anyone.

I wonder about some of the built-in drama at the end.

There was no big-name producer for the fake film (as portrayed by Arkin)...

They never went to the market as "location scouts"...

The airline tickets were bought ahead of time and were in their hands as they entered the terminal...

The passport check was pretty cursory...

...and nobody jumped into cars and chased the plane down the runway.

Ticks me off.  If you're going to retell history, tell it true.

Friday night watched a forgotten gem starring Sean Connery and directed by Sidney Lumet: The Offense from 1973.

This movie was awesome but it also deals with very difficult subject matter. I would say this is the closest thing to a graphic novel I have ever seen on the screen and it is the best performance by Sean Connery I have ever seen.  This is not action hero Connery.

The movie details the hunt for a child rapist and an interview with a prime suspect that goes horribly awry and the story is told out of sequence and can be very confusing at times but it was really just well done.

I read because of the dark subject the movie bombed in 1973 and it may also explain why Connery never (so far as I know) took as meaty a roll again in his career.

I would say if you are a movie buff, a Connery fan, and can handle deeply disturbing subject matter, put this film near the top of your list.

I went to White House Down last night.  It's not too bad as far as action goes but the over-the-top leftist bias of the movie might be too much to take for most Conservative Cave people.

I won't give too much away in case some of you go to see it, but the president is a democrat who's trying to put together a middle east peace deal.  The republican speaker of the house is a caricature/composite of DU's idea of a republican house speaker.  The "right wing" terrorists are right out of Hollywood central casting, including white supremacists.

If you want to see a movie about terrorists taking over the White House, I would recommend the far superior movie from a few months back called Olympus Has Fallen.

We went to see it last Thursday night w son and his girlfriend. We all liked it. Those action scenes kept me quite tense!

BUT.... at times it was VERY difficult to separate the underlying message that Obama is awesome (amazing how much Jamie Foxx resembled O and the actresses playing wife and daughter looked like Michelle and the oldest daughter  ::)  ) and that all Conservatives are evil terrorists.

I must admit though.. Channing Tatum was quite, um... nice?  :shucks: And when he "lost" his shirt..  :naughty:

Mrs. E pretty much nailed when she said that movies released for the summertime are generally geared toward teenagers and bubbleheads who are interested in car chase scenes, tons and tons of special effects, explosions, and general mayhem, and empty-headed romantic comedies that aren't even close to funny -- just stoopid.

Well I'm not a teenager, so I guess I'm a bubblehead!  :hammer:

I LIKE the car chases, special effects, explosions and general mayhem.

Looking forward to "Red 2" coming out mid month. Thought the first one was great. If you haven't seen it, either rent it or it's been showing on TNT several times in the last week or so. The last one I saw, the guys talked me into seeing that one with Woody Harrelson in it, where they end up at Bill Murray's house (playing himself) and killing him. After that one, I told them they were on their own going to zombie movies. I'd stay home and read a book.

It was that way back in the 1970s too. I had to turn up the auditorium volume for every one of those trashy movies that I showed.

At times, the dust would float down from the supports for the ceiling and roof. Two tube amplifiers, each 18" wide x 22" deep, x 6" tall can do that! Especially through the 3 banks of 3' diameter speakers, 3 speakers in each bank behind the screen and the side side stereo speakers! I had me some kind of fun!!!!!!  :yahoo:

It's so outrageously ridiculous that it's funny as hell. Malkovich tells Willis in the first scene (at a Costco, no less) that he hasn't killed anybody in MONTHS so it's really quite necessary for Willis to get back in the "game."

Mary-Louise Parker is hysterically funny and Helen Mirren is the bitch you really don't want to piss off.  :rotf:   :lmao:

I refuse to go to theaters to see a movie. The kicking of the seats, the yells and screams, the cussing - it's not worth it to me.

The last movie I saw in a theater was The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada back in 2006, because it sounded interesting and had Tommy Lee Jones as its star.

That's over 7 years ago.

They're getting rarer, but they're still around in some places.

Just saw it and had a blast. I did recognize the airfield they used at the end of the film. I saw the white cargo 747 and the C-47 with invasion stripes and realized they were shooting at Dunsfold Aerodrome in the UK. That airfield is where the Top Gear UK studio is and the track where they test the cars they feature on the show. You can see the studio buildings in the background in a couple of the scenes.

I worked as a projectionist at a drive in. Different world from an indoor theater. So much power to generate the light, but I could light up the entire place! And the amplifiers! Geez. Monster amplifiers for the sound system!

They're getting rarer, but they're still around in some places.

We have two in our area, and actually a guy in Murfreesboro is talking about building a new big one.

The newer ones, and those updated, are easier to operate in the booth. They're now using electric bulbs (powerful ones) for the projector lights, instead of the carbon arc lamps I used.

Last night I watched Movie 43 on netflix.  I would recommend it, though with a few caveats.  If you liked There's Something About Mary, the Airplane movies, and Kentucky Fried Movie, you might like Movie 43.  It's very raunchy, not so much because of nudity--although there is some--but it is pretty vulgar.  If you've seen There's Something About Mary that will give you some idea of what I'm talking about.  The skits are hit and miss, but some are really funny.  But the thing about the movie that really surprised me was that there are a lot of really big name Hollywood stars in it doing very lowbrow humor--a lot of them aren't really known for doing comedy at all (Kate Winslet, Halle Berry, Live Schreiber, and Richard Gere to name a few).   But there is one skit in particular where Gerard Butler plays a leprechaun that had me laughing so hard that tears were running down my face.  I was laughing so hard that I was genuinely concerned that there was a possibility that I would die laughing--it struck me  as that funny.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1333125/

But one final warning:
Quote
Released on January 25, 2013, Movie 43 has been widely panned by critics, with Richard Roeper calling it "the Citizen Kane of awful".

Saw Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips last Friday.

No Oscar nomination for him in this one. A rather contrived New England accent and the end scene with him in the Navy vessel's sick bay just didn't pass the smell test.

The Navy Chief Corpsman, on the other hand, was a bit of a hottie. And real. They casted her, so what she said and how she said it was real.

Phillips is alleged to have been a bit of an asshole, rude and brusque to his crew. It seemed as though Hanks was always telling his crew to "Enjoy your coffee and get to work" while they're sitting around on their asses.

On the whole, if you can separate Hanks' politics from this film -- he did not direct it and he did not produce it (Kevin Spacey was executive producer) -- it's worth a few bucks to see it.

Hollyweird always takes "creative license" with its movies. Probably not sour grapes at all -- has the ring of truth to it. A ship's captain who allows himself to be portrayed in the most positive light and does not put his crew up there front and center to take the credit isn't much of a leader.

I was looking for something to watch on Netflix tonight when I noticed that Olympus Has Fallen is now available for live streaming.

Captain America.
The Avengers.

Star Trek Into Darkness.
Reds 2.
Cowboys versus Aliens.
Prometheus.

I think there were a couple more, but not sure what they were.

Mrs. E and I went to see "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" directed by and starring Ben Stiller.

We were pleasantly surprised. I thought the acting was very good, script also very good. Stiller did some things with angles and display of credits that was a little unusual too. The female lead, Kristen Wiig, was unknown to me. Not ravishingly beautiful (but still easy on the eyes), and 40 years old, she did a great job. I didn't know anything about her, but see she's been on SNL and a few other films I've not seen before. Sean Penn has a small role in this film, which is the only down side - that punk needs his ass beat on a daily basis.

No sex and no nudity, which is a good thing if a little unusual.

It's a good yarn, and well worth the money to see it. I don't think this film is Oscar-material, but I don't care about that. I just like a good story.

Out of 3 stars, I give it 3.

Not a movie that I'd watch again, but I found it mildly entertaining.  Denzel Washington played a believable drunk.  The movie was too dark to be wrapped up with the touchy-feely feel-good ending imo.  Ending simply wasn't credible considering the nature of the character.

Interesting observation. I saw the film too, and while I never spend more than 5 minutes analyzing ANY film (I'm after somewhat cheap entertainment and little else), I thought he gave a credible performance both during his drunken debauchery and, after the epiphany happened.

Some drunks/druggies do come back from their version of hell. And I think Denzel showed how that could be done.

The film definitely was dark, though. Dark for a reason, and we ain't talking race here. The idea that a commercial pilot could drink and drug to the extent that Washington portrayed is dark all by itself. The whole scenario is doubtful in that way since the FAA and the airlines, through medical exams that are pretty damned thorough, tend to weed the problem children out before they become full-blown, like Washington certainly played.

I just got back from watching Lone Survivor.

Quote
Lone Survivor is a 2013 American war film written and directed by Peter Berg, and starring Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and Eric Bana. It is based on the 2007 nonfiction book of the same name by Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson. Set during the War in Afghanistan, the film dramatizes the failed United States Navy SEALs mission Operation Red Wings, in which a four-man SEAL reconnaissance and surveillance team was tasked to track Taliban leader Ahmad Shah.

Two thumbs up.  They say that there are a few departures in historical accuracy from the actual events, but nothing that twists the truth in a malicious way.  From the authentic look of the picture--weapons, uniforms, equipment--they had cooperation from the military in making it.

I saw the film last night with Mrs. E.

I read the book not long after it came out, and I found the book positively spellbinding. Highly encourage anyone to read it.

The nonsense about Luttrell's being grabbed by the Taliban after having been wounded in the battle, and then being led over to the bloody treetrunk where they were going to cut off his head is just that -- pure Hollywood. He was indeed found by that Afghani villager and safeguarded for the 3-4 days it took for the word to get back to J-bad. And the bad guys were definitely looking for him, but through the villagers, Luttrell evaded them while he began recovery from his serious wounds.

And I noted in several spots in the film where, in gatherings of SEALS, Luttrell himself made cameo appearances.

Definitely worth seeing.

I've never seen it.  But I occasionally like to watch an old black and white movie from the '40's.  I love the set decorations and the clothing they wore then.  Sometimes there is even a good story plot.

Never been a fan of today's guy type of "blood and guts" movies.  My favorites are comedies and mysteries.

I agree with the special effects stuff too.  I went with one of my kids to see "The Lord Of The Rings" and laughed all the way through, but no one else in the theater was laughing.

I guess the Cyclops and the octopus weren't in it for comedy relief.

Did you grow up watching that type of stuff?

Yeah, I read all the sci-fi books in the high school library. Loved the sci-fi comic books of the 50's/60's....space aliens, all that stuff. Oh, and The Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, The Outer Limits on TV, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc., etc...

But the funny thing is I don't buy into the crazy conspiracy theories like space aliens, Bermuda triangle stuff. A lot of people into sci-fi believe all kinds of crazy stuff.

I remember watching some of the older Twilight Zone stuff when I was growing up.  I didn't care for the newer ones.

In my formative years, I watched a few episodes of Babylon 5, and I think that's what soured me on that type of stuff.  Terrible, horrible, awful.   :p

Godzilla.

Great special effects but they spent most of the screen time NOT showing you the monsters. I understand this is to build suspense but after 90+ minutes it became more of a distraction. It's still a good beer and popcorn movie.

I saw Fury last night, after having cashed in about 60 hubby points to bring Mrs. E along.

Meh.

No plot, no story. Just war. Horrific war.

Apart from the realism (God, those guys really used those shitty M3 grease guns?) in spots (c'mon, 5 guys in a Sherman are gonna take on an entire SS battalion of troops, armed with Panzerfausts, and not get hit by those right away?), this film is a joke. Gimme a break. They say to suspend your disbelief, but this is ridiculous. Shades of Hogan's Heroes.

The Germans were NOT stupid. This film portrays them in that way.

Brad Pitt - go comb your pretty hair and make kissy-face with Angelina. It's what you do best.

Caught "The Hunter" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1703148/) on TV a few weeks ago. I liked it so much I bought the DVD.

Quote
The Hunter speaks of humanity left in a cruel man who was sent on a different mission. This time he is to hunt down an endangered animal and then he comes in touch with a wonderful family with kids where he finds his softness in heart. Film rather starts and moves bit slow but it just gives the total freedom for the viewer to wonder about. The plot is unique and I'm sure I have not come across anything similar before. The landscapes are amazingly beautiful and the story line keeps you going. I like Dafoes performance on this. And the sweet little kids.

The Tasmanian Tiger is a marsupial thought to be extinct since 1936 when the last captive animal died in captivity in 1936.

King of Jazz (1930)

It was one of a handful of films shot using the Technicolor 3 process, and the first to contain a technicolor cartoon.  It was the first film to have all of the sound pre-recorded, since the band director, Paul Whiteman insisted on retaining the clarity that could be obtained without the odd sound dynamics of a stage.

A very young Bing Crosby made his debut singing with the Rhythm Boys as well.  He was being transported to and from the stage by a police escort, because he was serving a 40-day sentence for drunk driving.

It's a nice historic piece for sure, although I don't think I'd call it a movie.  There is no plot, and it moves along like a vaudevillian show.  It's public domain, and difficult to find, but someone was kind enough to upload it to archive.org:

This Is 40 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1758830/?ref_=nv_sr_1)  One of Paul Rudd's better movies.  The screenplay was good.

Elysium (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1535108/?ref_=nv_sr_1)  Matt Damon in a dystopian future.  Good action movie.

Hobbit 3 - Smaug's the original badass. Too much focus on Thorin, although, yeah, he led the original Gang of Dwarves (and Bilbo) through the book.

Nothing in the book about the Elves being in Laketown when Smaug was acting like an ass, at least that I recall. Artistic license, I guess.

Orcs may look badass, but in battle they're pussies.

Alot of the extra shit in the movies came from the Appendix in LOTRs and in Tolkien's notes of the books collected and published by his son Christopher. Not everything in the books is in the movies though. Tom Bombadil was left out. Oh well.

Elves in Laketown are not found in the book- nor is the female elf with the hots for the dwarf. A little licence but it wasn't too bad.

Yeah, I am a huge Tolkien nut.

Agreed on all counts.

We had a smartass in the audience at first in running his mouth, but at the end of the flick, not a word could be heard.

One thing that I appreciated -- the film spent quite a bit of time on the relationship between Kyle and his wife and the turmoil they both went through. Battle scenes are there and these are gripping, but the theme of the movie isn't violence, mayhem, and making a political statement about Iraq/Bush. It's about people and their choices, and how they have to live with them.

In Kyle's case, he died by his decision to be selfless and helpful to his fellow vets to the point that he was betrayed by a nutcase who should not have been released from psychiatric care.

A bunch of the wife's friends(all female) drove 45 miles to see the movie. They went to the early show and had to kill a couple of hours before they could get in. They were quite moved by the movie. They said that when it ended you could have heard a pin drop in the theater...then everyone got up and quietly left wiping tears from their eyes.

I'll go see it sometime in the next few days when it comes to town.

Same here.

I like how Marvel has been successful at tying all their movies together, even the TV series Agents of Shield.

I watched The Double based on Dostoevsky's story of the same name. Interesting movie but not sure what it had to do with the Dostoevsky's story.

I watched "Honeymoon" on netflix last night.  It's an "alien" type movie but very creepy.  I don't normally like those movies but this one was the kind that left a lot to the imagination so you scare yourself....it wasn't blatant.

I haven't heard of that one. I'll have to look it up. Do you know if it's in Netflix?

Van Helsing (the one starring Jackman) was not only supposed to be the launch of a movie franchise, it was going to the basis for an entire Theme Park!

Instead they relabeled the Frankenstein's castle attraction at Universal Studios, Hollywood.  Eventually they even removed that label.

And it was a pretty crappy movie.

Watched on NETFLIX last night "Blood Ties".  Drama about two brothers...one a cop the other a crook....was very good...starred Clive Owen, Mina Kunis, some other famous faces that I don't know their names.

I had a few days off last week.

I re-watched the Dark Knight Trilogy and Captain America:Winter Soldier then trolled Netflix for horror movies.

Beyond the Black Rainbow --Really weird and stylish, about a bunch of drug-addled DUmmies living in a dome torturing some little girl with psychic powers.

In Absentia -- Kind of like Wes Craven's They, a woman is finally about to get on with her life 7 years after her husband vanishes without a trace when suddenly he reappears.

And then started to watch Europa Report but was too tired to finish it. I was also kind of bored with watching movies at that point anyway. Hopefully I finish it soon. Before it vanishes from Netflix.

If any of you like horror/comedy, check out Tucker and Dale vs Evil. My son told me about it, and I loved it.

Another horror/comedy movie my son told me about is Cabin in the Woods. I liked that one as well.

I liked it but I'm not sure if it was about Paul Williams or a creepy fan.

We saw the latest fast and furious. My son and nephew wanted to see it.

Lots spectacular and unbelievable action. Their walky talkies worked over long distances and around the world. While such technology does exist, it usually doesn't work when they are in a tunnel. A walky talky with just its rubber duck antenna inside a car is usually not working well to begin with.

My family knows better than to take this engineer to the movies.

We watched GotG just because it fits in sort of with the other Marvel movies.  Not bad, but it wasn't quite as good as the others.

The writers for Agents of Shield do a fairly good job of tying in the movies now and then.

I watched this one on Netflix:
Quote
America: Imagine the World Without Her
2014 PG-13 1hr 44m

What would the world look like if America never existed? Author Dinesh D'Souza explores this fascinating, thought-provoking and stirring question.

I also watched the new Netflix Marvel series Daredevil.

I watched An American Hippie in Israel last night.

This movie is from 1972 and yet it is the perfect model of Skin's Island.

If you enjoy bad movies, give this one a spin. IT was on TCM Underground this past weekend and anything I say could not do it justice. And if you hate bad movies with stilted acting, long scenes of nothing happening, and bizarre events that are never fully explained, you may not have much patience for this movie, but viewed as a cultural artifact, it is priceless.

Spoilers?:

Essentially, an American hippie from New York comes to Israel, meets a hot redhead, they meet other people, decide to go to an island to be "free," run into strange, pale faced men who are pursuing our American hippie all over the world, and there are face sharks (four years prior to Jaws!).

Real spoiler:

After most of the hippies are gunned down by the two pale-faced men, the four remaining ones drive (and drive and drive and drive) to an island, sit around eating canned food talking about how free they are, curse the world, have their little boat disappear, get attacked by obviously fake sharks, go to war with each other, and die. The end.

Must see!
