Title: new registrations temporarily closed
Post by: franksolich on December 07, 2013, 01:10:06 PM
I hope it's one of those problems not readily noticed by members, but the past twenty-four hours, the site's been raided by spammers from the old Soviet Union.  I have no idea why this happened, what inspired the Red Army to invade us.

New registrations have been temporarily closed--for a few hours, a few days, whatever--to see what happens.

Our apologies to members who have friends trying to register here.

Shouldn't we be more inclusive?  Besides Vesta could use some new people to talk to.

As a moderator at "the other site", I understand the problem.

However, with the DOTY voting starting tomorrow, I would suggest re-opening registration.  I realize that people can send me their ballots via e-mail, but quite a few "Primitives of Prominence" (your term) join up here just to vote.

Whatever you and the moderating staff think is fine.  It was just a suggestion.  :cheersmate:

Chris_ is closely monitoring the situation, as usual.

This could be only for some hours; I believe the last time it was only almost two days.....and it happened right during voting for the top DUmmies.  That was when we got hit by the Red Chinese, the yellow peril.

No problem, Frank.

I'll be absent from my computer for the rest of the day, but always get updates with that pesky phone app.

Non-members can submit registration requests (or DOTY votes) to our email, conservativecave@gmail.com.

And Frank posted the e-mail address for people to submit votes.

Thanks Chris!

I'm dealing with the same on my own forum to the tune of 20-30 a day. Fortunately the software has caught and auto banned everyone so all I have to do is go clean them out every couple of days.

Damn Russians.

Registration for new members is now re-opened.....but such new registrations can't activate their own accounts; one of the administrators has to do it, after checking out things.

Chris_ had re-opened registrations, and we immediately got hit by hordes of spammers again.

So while new registrations are being accepted, they're not self-activated.  They have to pass muster first.

We had a "guest" over on GoWest2016 the other day...I copied and pasted this:
Quote
Area: Guangdong
Country name: China
City: Shenzhen
latitude: 22.5333
longitude: 114.1333
Host: ptr.cnsat.com.cn
IP: 202.46.63.65

The IP location is ShenZhen Sunrise Technology Co.,Ltd., 2002 Jiabin Road,Luohu District,Shenzhen,China if anybody's interested. They sell a variety of mobile devices and equipment.

It turns out that CnSat is an Italian telecom company based in the port of Genova, Italy. They provide telecom services for sea-going vessels from little sailboats to cruise ships.

As a side note, a lot of spam bots come from IPs in this range.

Thought I'd pass this on.

Added to our blacklist.  Thanks.

I added half a dozen TOR Anonymizer proxies and third-party spam sources from China, Israel, and Ukrane as well.  Registration will be by administrator approval only until this mess dies down.  Guests can continue to register but they will have to be reviewed before they can post.

After making some changes to the sign-up process, registration has been reopened to the public.

Please alert on any suspicious messages and do not click on any unfamiliar links.  Thank you.
