Gates Backs Repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'
« on: February 02, 2010, 12:11:49 PM »

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday that he supports President Obama's decision to seek the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy prohibiting gays from serving openly in the military and has appointed a "high-level working group" to figure out how to do it.

Gates, in testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee, announced that Gen. Carter Ham, who leads U.S. Army forces in Europe, and Pentagon General Counsel Jeh Johnson will lead the review. The defense chief called for an "implementation plan" by the end of the year.

"I fully support the president's decision," Gates said. "The question before us is not whether the military prepares to make this change, but how we ... best prepare for it. We have received our orders from the commander in chief and we are moving out accordingly."

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, echoed Gates' remarks and added that, in his "personal view," changing the policy is the "right thing to do."

"I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy that forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens," Mullen said. "For me, personally, it comes down to integrity -- theirs as individuals and ours as an institution."

Mullen said he believes, but does not know for a fact, that military personnel will "accommodate" a change in the policy.

Obama said during the State of the Union address last week that he will work with Congress "this year" to repeal the controversial policy, renewing a campaign pledge that fell by the wayside last year as the president devoted his energy to health care reform.

But Gates cautioned Tuesday that no matter how much the Pentagon studies the issue, the "ultimate decision" rests with Congress.

Of course, the Marines haven't let a little rule like DADT ever stop them....

I guess they'll have to have 3 rest rooms now.....male, female and "them".

I know they do this in Europe but I don't see this as a good thing.....it's just all for votes politics by the dems.

This just plain flat disgusts the hell out of me.

I wonder just how painful it was for Gates to make the statement that he did. In fact, that he's still SecDef is unbelievable as it is.

I'm sure the fudgepackers and the rug munchers are insane with joy.

Read this with the thought of the leftist using homosexuality to undermine America as did the Nazi party undermined Germany and used it to take control.

Long read but revealing.

Gates can stand behind anything he wants. Congress isn't going to risk anything on this after the fun they have had  trying to run Healthcare down everyones necks and watching their futures go down the hole.

Hi,

My oldest boy graduated second in his class at the Naval Academy, then went to MIT and got a Master's degree in nuclear engineering with straight "A's".  He was a submarine officer and resigned his commission when Clinton was elected saying simply, "I will not serve under a commander in chief for whom I have no respect."

We had many discussions about this particular issue.  Can you imagine the impact it would have on a submarine where you are under water for three months at a time.  The technique is called hot bunks, meaning you are on twelve hours and off twelve hours.  Basically you go wake your replacement, he crawls out of the bunk and it is yours for the next twelve hours.  My son's contention is the military is not a social experiment and he is right.

Personally, I look at this issue differently.  We are asking these folks to volunteer to risk their lives for the security of the country.  They work for a pittance, under intolerable circumstances so the rest of us can enjoy our life.  If they do not want gays in their midst, so be it, who can blame them.  Ask anyone in the military and they will tell you that it totally undermines morale, and in combat units could endanger the lives of all.  I am not making that up, ask the folks who are in the know.

Anyone who has had the thrill of taking a shower with 74 of their best friends in a very small room know exactly what I mean.  Last thing we would need is some guy grinning at us with visible evidence that he is checking us out.  The Marines I was in with would likely take care of that situation fairly quickly.  Mercifully I served my country and was discharged long before this became any kind of an issue.

What happens when the straight folks decide they want no part of it and then you end up with an all gay military?

Stupid is as stupid does.....

regards,

I would love to see a Democrat-controlled congress keep DADT in place.  It would make the liberals little pin-heads explode.

Those who don't have a problem with gays in uniform, along with the gays who have served in uniform (most of whom have served honorably) will tell you that the queer who likes having his fudge packed won't be ogling the guys in the shower with visible evidence of his interest.

They'll tell you that he has eyes only for his honey and that it won't matter who else is in the shower butt-naked with him, he won't react.

I don't know about that - maybe they're right, maybe not.

I believe the policy states that homosexuality is prejudicial to the good order and discipline of the military services. It's been that way for quite a while. DADT by and large stopped the witchhunting that was going on, although the queers and rug munchers will tell you it didn't.  :whatever:

The point I'm driving at here is that the culture of the country has changed to the point that the average schmuck on the street doesn't give a rat's ass if a fag or dyke serves in uniform. He honestly doesn't care. He doesn't think about the close quarters and the hotbunking and the necessity of having to buddy up with your buddy just to keep from freezing to death. In the minds of most Americans these days, it's perfectly okay to be gay. It's not wrong, it's not abnormal, it just is. Because it is, they say, it's acceptable.

Not to me.

But I'm just one. The political climate has changed in this country. Politicians now are telling us that it's their policy that queers and dykes put down the double dongs and butt plugs and strap on a rucksack.

Un-****ing-believable.   :banghead:

It's nothing short of disgusting.
