Sweatshirt Sparks School Controversy

"You Can't Bring Us Down"
Quote
DEARBORN, Mich. -- About 15 Arab-American students at Edsel Ford High School are in trouble over a class sweatshirt they had made over the holiday break.
The class of 2011 sweatshirt has the number 11 made to look like the World Trade Center Towers. The school's mascot, a Thunderbird, is seen flying toward the number.

The students wore the hooded sweatshirts to school Monday. They were immediately sent to the principal's office.
The sweatshirts were confiscated.
“What took place here today was an inappropriate, distasteful act,” said David Mustonen, a spokesman for Dearborn Schools. “(It was) totally inappropriate, totally disrespectful, and they just were not thinking.”
The students told the principal they didn’t mean any harm by having the sweatshirts made.

SE Michigan had the largest Arab population in the US. Dearborn is the epicenter of the Muslim zone.

Students, officials clash over shirt

A group of Arab-American students in the class of 2011 at Dearborn's Edsel Ford High told school officials they were showing pride in their class with their choice of sweatshirts Monday.

But school officials disagreed, confiscating the sweatshirts and scheduling meetings with the students and their parents because the images on the sweatshirts referenced the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center. Along with the words, "You can't bring us down," the sweatshirts featured the No. 11 as the twin towers with windows included on each digit. The school's mascot, a thunderbird, was flying nearby.

"The whole design gave prominence to the 9/11 tragedy, and of course was very upsetting to staff and students," said an e-mail message sent Monday and Tuesday from the district to local groups and individuals. A similar e-mail message explaining the situation was sent to parents and staff Monday.

If the design disrupts the school in any form or fashion, it's got to go.

Pure and simple.

That's why school administrators get paid to make those kinds of decisions. Freedom of speech doesn't apply here.

That is why they have a dress code in the school system
Good girls are bad girls that never get caught.

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it, misdiagnosing it and then misapplying the wrong remedies.

On a just-not-getting-it scale of 1 to 10 this goes to 11.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

Let them wear them.  It just makes it easier to figure out who the huge pieces of shit are in life.

They do have the advantage of being a little easier to spot from a distance than this:

"Stand your ground. Don't fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here."
-- Capt. John Parker

"I'm not looking for forgiveness, and I'm way past asking permission"
-- Capt. Steve Rogers

"In this present crisis, government in not the solution to our problem, government IS the problem."

The students said 'they didn't mean any harm by it.'
Then what, pray tell, DID they mean by it.  :hammer:

I looked at the shirt and thought, "Hell yeah, you can't bring us down!"

You've got an eagle flying around the twin towers shaped like 1s. We all know what that date and buildings represent. The image says to me that no ****ing islamic extremist cocksuckers are ever gonna bring us down!

So what if they're 'Arab' Americans. They are Americans. Stop being so ****ing sensitive. Odds are they thought it was a positive messsage.

edit: up til this post I didn't know they were [shhhhh] Arab... [/]   not that it ****ing matters.

Despite your admonitions, what happens if there's a riot because of the sweatshirts? Doesn't the school administration have a responsibility to acknowledge disruption to the general order of the school -- regardless of the source -- and eliminate the source of the disruption?

It isn't whether or not people are too ****ing sensitive. It's about general order and discipline.
