Get A F***ing Grip People
 Advertisements [?]So,

As a result of the seemingly endless supply of apocalyptic "sky is falling" threads on DU lately, I finally lost my cool yesterday as I read the most inane thread about "retailers" cutting back on jobs.

Firstly, I came to America a few years ago, from the UK, inspired by the American "never say die" spirit. Yet what do I see on here, people moaning about how bad their life is, how they can`t find a job, how the government is to blame and so on. Guess what? You can`t find a job, start a bloody business. Why is it up to everyone else to hand you a job? Some poster was moaning, that they lost their 70k a year job a year ago, and can`t find another one. Hello, start your own business. But I can`t get credit. Here`s a thing, start a business on what you have and grow. Reinvest in your business and grow some more. Lose the victim mentality. Lose the handout mentality.

So retail is laying off people. Good. Perhaps stores will stop opening 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. One thing that has always stunned me, is going to a 24 hour store at 11.00 at night, and seeing parents dragging their kids around. Your kids should be in bed, asleep. It`s always the same, mum, dad and 3 or so kids half asleep in the shopping cart. My wife works, as do I, I do the grocery shopping. Its only ****ing groceries. I can buy food, I don`t need my wife traipsing around Walmart with me at 11.00 at night with my kids half asleep in a shopping cart. My mum and dad, who had six kids and were working class English, both of whom worked whilst we were growing up, never once, in my entire life, took us to the store at 11.00 at night and nor would they ever dream of doing that.

So Target is having to lay people off. Good, Target is shit, so is Kohl`s, Macy`s and 100 other stores like that. Your business model is out of date. Change or pay the price. Halve your costs by closing at a reasonable time. Don`t open on Sundays. Ah I hear you say, we need to have stores open on Sundays. Why? Because you can`t organize your time to shop on a Saturday? I worked in retail in the UK, in fact, I was a retail manager. I saw this, "we must be open 7 days a week mentality" get introduced in the 90s. I left retail. Its bollocks quite honestly. Its fueled by greed. Stores will do the same amount of business in 6 days between 9 and 7.00 as they will in 7 days open 24 hours a day. This is a time for American to examine itself and return to the values that made it such an amazing and inspiring place to us Europeans.

What has happened to the American spirit of innovation? All I see on here are people moaning about this and that, how Obama said this, Hilary said that and McCain dribbled something into his microphone. There are huge opportunities out there at the moment. Find a niche, go green, the world is changing, and like all change, traditional business models will adapt or disappear. Certainly retail sales may be suffering, but internet sales are booming. The "eating out" culture is disappearing. You know what, good. Try cooking at home and having family meals.

The fact that Americans are doing exactly what is needed at this point, namely cutting back on their irresponsible spending should be seen as a good thing. So Best Buy can`t sell 700 inch plasma screen TVs, you know what, I don`t care, I would much rather have a country whose people know how to prioritize responsibly then a country with a bunch of suicidal lemmings in major denial.

The economic model is changing. We are returning to what is known as trickle up economics. **** the Federal govt, **** the corporations. It is not my responsibility to continuously feed some corporate beast, I would much rather put my money into a local business. And guess what, if any of you who cannot get a job, start a local business, many people like me will give you our money.

Stop feeling sorry for yourselves, I know this may seem harsh, but get a bloody grip. Obama, Hilary, Insane, none of them are going to help you. The federal govt is not supposed to help you, and until you start realizing that and acting accordingly by getting off your asses and doing something for yourselves, and if that means you can`t find a bloody job, then do something on your own and to hell with the risk.

Grrrr

Peace

We have had a business in America for over 25 years, working our butts off earning less and less every year with a very good prospect of our retirement fund being washed down the toilet. Over the 25 years we have paid into Social Security hundreds of thousands of dollars that we will never see. Please excuse me when I say...p*ss off. Now it's back to work. Peace, Kim

I'm the $70K person you refer to in your OP.
You don't know me or my situation -- so how dare you flippantly tell me to "start a business". WHEN you've walked a mile in my shoes, THEN you can judge me. Not before.

So until then, **** you.

197. Again, not sure why you are so angry towards Americans but...
to make your direct statement about people when you only have YOUR experience and to make your comments with the anger and profanity mixed in just showed us who you are as a person...to me it shows an ignorant person. I know how my life has been and is going so your ignorant comments don't infuriate me, they just make me wonder why you would make yourself look so blatantly ignorant?

There are enough ignorant people around that like to point fingers at others when they have no idea of the circumstances of those people they point at. As far as I'm concerned you can crawl back under the rock from which you came from. Oh, and I stand by my first statement as well, you have shown us who you are inside. If you have children, I hope you teach them to understand that not everyone has the same experiences in life and they shouldn't judge everyone by their own cover.

Go try and find something positive to do and be constructive instead of destructive, we don't need anymore destructive douche bags here!

And on, and on, and on. Wow, they really don't like it when someone tells them to GET A JOB!!!!

Even though the op seems to agree with DUmmies on most points the fact that he suggests they be responsible and stop wallowing in self pity and victimhood means he has committed sacrilege.
The blasphemy against the sacred teachings of the cult must be condemned and eradicated.

51. Welcome, this place needs a dose of what
you just posted. You see here in America, the thinking goes along this line, "Its everybody else's fault but me and I should be taken care of by the Government". The Dems blame the Repubs, the Repubs blame the Dems. Never mind their two sides of the same coin. But its all about ME. We have become a Nation of whiners not doers.

You asked, "What has happened to the American spirit of innovation?". Check out our school system, that will pretty much answer your question. Its all about acceptance, understanding and feeling good about yourself.(yea I said that) Not using your hands and head to make a living or self discipline. Welcome, I say and damn good post. Its truthful and you'll see that by the amount of outrage directed your way. For what its worth you've got at least one backer here for sure

A dope smokin, Harley ridin, long hair, tattooed, whiskey drinkin, gun totin, republican. ya got me. Yea, ever time I disagree with "liberals' I'm praising Jesus and whacking off to bush. I wish I was as astute as you. The OP hit the nail on the head. like I said the truth hurts.

He has only been here a short time and comes up with the same prognosis that some Brazilians I worked with last year came up with. coincidence? I think not. If you think the Government, Dem or Repug, cares about anything, other than staying in power, than your pretty naive.

Ya see, the problem with voting party line no matter what,is that it makes you narrow minded and closed to a different thought pattern. I know a young Black woman who is second generation from West Africa. She says the same thing. I guess she's a Republican supporter, too?

"Are you SURE this is where you want to be?" Hell yea, I sure am. There are just as many here who think like me as, those who don't. Ain't America great?

Ruh Roh!!! They get a little closer to the truth and then break out the lighter fluid for the bonfire.

Idjits.

As for the OP -

Closing stores earlier or on Sundays would never fly. This is a country with 300 million people. There's no way such a blanket policy would work. And it's not because we need to "buy 700 inch flat screens" (mmmm...flat screen!) or that we just love our Made in China crap at 11pm, it's because people work and have lives! Yes, I've seen the people he's referring to. The ones who do shop at all hours with their rug rats and wander aimlessly around with silly stuff in their carts. But you know what? That's life! Some people in America *gasp* have disposable income and unconventional schedules!!! It's a generalization to say they are all idiots. Granted there are a few but..my point is that the economy thrives off consumerism. Cutting people off is going to back fire.

The other ideas (not whining, starting your own business) are sound ideas. No wonder DU is pissed!  :-)

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

The DUmbass has paid hundreds of thousands into Social Security he knows he will never see yet is all for more government control.

Liberalism, particularly socialism, is truly a mental disease.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

As for the OP -

Closing stores earlier or on Sundays would never fly.

The other ideas (not whining, starting your own business) are sound ideas. No wonder DU is pissed!  :-)

I've always wondered how much extra overhead stores are spending by staying open 24x7.  I have stopped in at a few stores in the middle of the night and would see maybe 3 or 4 other shoppers.  Is it really worth paying for staff and utilities for such a low volume of business?  My daughter works for Walmart, I may ask her to introduce me to her manager so I can ask just that question.

I agree that closing on Sundays probably would hurt many retail stores, but not staying open 24 hours a day is a different kettle of fish altogether IMO.

Most stores closed at 9 p.m. or so when I was younger  They managed to stay in business.

I really don't recall what store that 1st went 24x7 in our area back then, but I wonder....  Did the change come from demand, or did the change create the demand?

As to the rest of the OP.  I agree.  Stop whining and looking for someone else to solve all your problems.
