Shipping-Containers
« on: October 20, 2021, 04:52:35 AM »
In my own mind I was assuming that the longer shipments remain on logjammed vessels, the 'hypothetical space' of the container becomes more valuable than the items inside... which would be evident the next time the container is used.

But this article from Breitbart is scary...
https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2021/10/19/report-shipping-containers-from-stranded-ships-dumped-in-l-a-neighborhoods/

I remember an old descriptive that newsrooms used-to use a lot in the 60's...  urban blight.

I'm just curious, in "normal times" what percentage of containers are shipped out empty?

The article says that the containers are being "stored" kinda wherever they can find room for them after they're emptied. I'm guessing that the ships that offloaded them have already hied back to China/Vietnam/India/Indonesia. Otherwise, I think (could be way off here) they'd load up those same containers with American goods for the return trip.

There have been TV dramas with seasons and/or episodes revolving around smuggling illegal immigrants in such storage containers at ports.  The Wire, CSI: Miami come to mind.

I'm curious if there are any containers in the scores of ships waiting offshore that have humans in them who thought they were signing up for a 14 day cruise to the promised land.  I'd hate to be the one to open up any of those containers.

The containers aren't physically checked around the world, as a rule.

Their paperwork is.  They're sealed with a Government locking-'band'.  The weight of the container has to logically match-up with the items listed inside.

When it's opened at the address on the paperwork, some countries might have a few officials on site.  That's about it.  But using one to travel in is like being locked in a 20x8x8 windowless submarine for 2-months.

So, relatively plush and roomy accomodations for your average submariner, then? (I kid.  :naughty: )

Doesn't surprise me at all. Since the cost of a home, even a modest house, has become stupidly expensive in Commiefornia, kinda makes shipping containers and cardboard boxes viable options.

At Disneyland the fireworks launch control bunker is a converted shipping container with a reinforced roof and 1 1/2" thick reinforced picture window that overlooks the launch site to keep the operator safe during a show.  During my time there I had a few shells land nearby the bunker or bounce off the roof with no damage to the container other than a little scorched paint.

Great vid.  Underscores the business as usual aspect of the industry, trying to claw back into focus.  Without COVID, but still with Biden, we would've had this problem eventually.  Probably by 2022.

Holy cow, DLR ... :hi5:

I, for some reason, watched the entire above vid.  Even read some of the comments below it.  Being a "land-locked" person living in the mountains of North Georgia, and wondering about what is going on aboard those container ships waiting out in the water for so long ...

Was fascinated by Makoi's explanations!

Only problem now is, I should have been making dinner instead!   :bolt:  :-)
