John Phillip Sousa ? The inventor of the Sousaphone ?
Welcome to the forum. Glad you are here. I hope your stay is long and prosperous.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

Thank you,

From 1880 until his death, Sousa began focusing exclusively on conducting and wrote marches during this time. He eventually rejoined the Marine Band and served there for 12 years as director.

Welcome, Marine.   :cheersmate:

We have plenty of sanity here. You might have to look for it some, but it's here.  :-)

And no, FWIW, the sousaphone was not invented by John P., rather the J.W. Pepper company, in the 1890's. They played helicons in Sousa's band as the term "sousaphone" wasn't even coined until 1920 or thereabouts.

Meh. If you want your soul stirred, listen to any of these:

http://www.allmusic.com/album/screamers-circus-marches-mw0001351671

Circus screamers are called that because they're designed to raise your blood pressure while the circus acts are going on. They're technically demanding to play and for that reason, I love this stuff.

Played a circus-type gig last week and had a helluva time.

Heed, King, Duble, Bennett, Fillmore, Jewell -- these guys are all unsung heroes of the march. For stately, dignified marches, nobody touches Kenneth Alford.

Sousa gets all the glory, but he wrote some turds too. Ever try marching to Sousa's Washington Post march? If you don't march for a living (most soldiers don't, but band guys do), fuggedaboudit.

A number of years ago, at a Mardi Gras parade, one of the Marine Corps marching bands, after playing Stars and Stripes Forever, probably one of the most difficult to march to, was in a parade break.

Got to talking to the OIC of the detail, just military BS, and I asked him, when they resumed, if they would do one of the older gentlemen with us, a Marine not currently on active duty(there is no such thing as an ex-marine), 70 years old, a favor and step off with the hymn.

His eyes lit up, he snapped to attention, marched to the front of the detail, and in a booming voice said "SARGEANT MAJOR"  "Sir?"  "The hymn, if you please" "YES SIR!" The band immediately came to attention, and played the hymn right there, and did not move until they finished the last bar.

As they marched off, I looked at my old friend, and there were tears in his eyes.

You're right about the National March being one of the more difficult marches to play on the march. In any band I ever played in, we avoided it for that reason. Playing it static? No problem. But not marching.

We'd have a great time marching troops to Washington Post, however. Since the accent is on the right foot, messed 'em up pretty bad.  :whistling:
