Title: Stairs
Post by: BEG on August 26, 2012, 08:15:10 PM
It has begun...

Ugly stairs before.

Here is the inspiration for our new stairs.

This is why the stairs look stupid, there is a support beam in the way.

They over came that in the next house they built by adding extra steps at the bottom and moving the entryway over.

Tear down begins.

He is going to get the stairs exactly where they go before he tears down the wall.

He has to build up the small landing to accommodate the extra stairs at the bottom. The landing will be split into two stairs.

The two stairs on the landing will be split diagonally.

The pony wall is gone on the right side of the stairs.

All of the carpet is coming up in the hallway upstairs and the same wood floor as downstairs is going up there.

This picture really shows the difference in height from the the original stairs.

I will update this as we go.

Now I can sleep at night.   :-*

I think the stairs are going to look fabulous.  What is happening to that rounded landing up at the top?  Are you going to modify that too?

Here are some temp stairs at the bottom of the stairs.

Problem #1 they looked like apartment/cheap house stairs

Problem #2 the balcony (or what ever it's called) should be open

Problem #3 carpet on the stairs. The carpet was already matted and I vacuumed it regularly. Wrong type of carpet for stairs.

Problem #4 I want stairs like the picture I posted, I get what I want.

It's so tiny. In China, a small foot on a woman is considered very attractive. So much so that the Chinese developed a practice of foot binding. I wonder if we could apply that practice to libs heads ?

Last night he tore down the Sheetrock so he can see where to cut the wall down.

Here is the bastard beam that is in the way. He talked to the builder and knows how they fixed the situation in the other house (they are building yet another house like ours with the same exact elevation.  The other house like ours has a different elevation, I like ours better).

Here he framed out the stairs (I helped by putting the screws in on the outside wall with his cordless drill).

The finished length of each step will be about 53" wide. Wider than average stairs but it is what it is.

Let me be the judge. lol

The stairs look good and your husband is doing a good job. He's not taking any "shortcuts" either...that is nice to see...  That is how my father always did things, the right way. I also like the fact that the stairs won't be so steep to climb. Some stairs are almost dangerous. Especially as you get older or for small children, like grandkids.  O-)

I was always better working with metal & paint then wood....but I did amaze my self trying a few projects in the past few years for the first time that paid contractors screwed up. It turned out to be pretty simple and I was amazed at the little stuff they missed that caused big issues.

OK....back to your legs stairs.  :-)

Title: Re: Stairs
Post by: BEG on September 02, 2012, 08:07:39 PM
The wood stair treads are 1" and will have 1" overhang over the plywood treads. The inner string that you see screwed into the wall my husband ripped from high density mdf. He left it long so he can trim it later. He counter sunk the screws so he can fill, sand and paint.

Now we are figuring out how we want to place the newel posts and determine the angle of the divided landing steps before we order all of the stair parts. We are thinking of going with knotty alder treads and railing stained dark (this is what our cabinets are). Our floor is hickory and hickory stair treads look nothing like our floor so instead of trying to match the floor we are going to go obviously different so it looks on purpose. There is a dark color in our floor that goes with our cabinets and that was why we picked the floor so it should look really good.

Don't look at the and handrail, he just moved it up when he was working on te stairs to give us something to hold on to. He is taking it down before he does the wainscoting.

The treads will hang over the steps 1" on the front and side of he steps. I have the job of painting all the wood that you see (after he finishes the last few steps) the trim color.

I'm going to paint the hall to our bedroom and selected walls (and perhaps the upstairs hallway) the color you see in the bottom picture.  It's two colors down from the current wall color on the color sample swatch.  The paint is Sherman Williams (holy crap their paint is expensive). The current wall color is called Kilim Beige (SW 6106) and the color I'm going to paint selected walls is called Latte (SW 6108).

Because the door trim isnt thick enough for the wainscoting my husband is going o have to beef it up like this..

We are going to do something I like this the to the top on the tops the doors frame.

I forgot to grab a picture of it all painted but I have another example done by someone else.

Here is what adding a little molding can do for a room.

Ah, I did have one. This is finished trim from the first example.

Our half bath is getting wainscoting, built in magazine rack and a medicine cabinet/mirror that looks similar to the one in the bethroom remodel my husband did in our house in Fullerton.

Here is the mirror he built for the bathroom in Fullerton.

I started priming all the wood.

We were going to use 1/4 MDF for the smooth part of the wall for the wainscoting but by adding that it would have added 1/4" overall and would have caused us problems so my husband is going to smooth the walls himself (using joint compound) below the wainscoting. I wish I had smooth walls...

Wainscoting down this hallway, crown molding at the ceiling. A little cubby/hall tree thing. Similar to this but configured differently.

He put a coat of joint compound on the wainscoting walls tonight.  He will add a 2nd coat tomorrow. We had to go to a local fine woods shop for two specialty steps and for the arch around the balcony. My husband drew up the size and shape of what he wants and they will fabricate it to a certain point.  He ordered the other treads from someone else (knotty Alder -superior) and the Newell and baulusters are from another compamy.

So many of my replies are vesta like, stream of consciousness. The first thought that occurred to me is the 10 to 1 ratio. This thread is holding steady at slightly better than average reply to viewings ratio. I attribute that to the good remodel tastes of the OP, and the OP's tenacity in keeping the thread, and all loyal readers up to date.

The newels and baulusters came in yesterday. I opened one of them up and set it on the stairs. The baulusters are square (both came primed and are going to be painted the trim color, Sherwin Williams Dover White).

The newel I took the picture of will sit more on the upper stair behind the newel and will come down to the first "winder" step and rest on the step it is sitting on now but only about 1/6th of the newel will be sitting on that stair. Basically it will be set back into the stairs behind it.

The railing and stair treads are going to be knotty alder (superior for any wood workers here) and stained the same dark stain our cabinets are. My husband got an email today saying the treads were shipped.  The balcony and two "winder" stairs had to be custom made and a local fine wood store here in Austin is making them.

Again, that railing will come off the wall once my husband finishes the wainscoting.

Picture the bottom three stairs wider and the newels the proper height and proper position. Pretend there are treads, balusters, railing, trim and wainscoting.  :-)

Sherwin makes great paint!  I actually used to have a mixing bank for their automotive paints. The products worked great and the company reps were more honest. If their was a known problem they let us know, rather then just saying it was an "application issue."

The treads came in today. They will need to be trimmed on the wall side and my husband has some sanding to do on the stringer/skirt side (not sure what you call it) so the tread fits tight against the risers. They will be stained a dark stain to match our cabinets. I'm really happy with the way they turned out. I was afraid they would have a ton of knots but it looks like they have just the amount I was hoping for.

Don't pay attention to the bottom stairs. He still has to build those stairs out. Also the 6th tread from the top (or bottom) is supposed to go at the very top step where there isn't one. I didn't know that there was one that was a different size.

Need to fill some more nail holes, gaps etc then sand. Next step prime then paint. The reason the curved part is a different color is because it is bender board. The rest is MDF.

Primed

The little triangle on the right side of the three stairs will be covered with a vertical piece of wainscoting. There will also be a baseboard on it which will leave a very small triangle of recessed wall like the normal waincoting. We went back and forth wether to make that area solid board or to create a mini wainscoting effect. If it looks stupid he will just make is solid.

He will be attaching the bullnose to those steps. We had to have those made locally (he ordered the other ones online) and they are as thick as they make knotty alder at the local wood shop. They are 1/4" less thick than the treads so he needs to make them appear thicker with the bullnose. He also accounted for the thickness difference in the height of the stairs.

We did do more work this past weekend than I will show here. Mainly sanding the shit out of everything.

He started putting the trim back on the doors. Still not totally finished yet. The trim is wider and thicker than it was previously. He had to make it thicker so the wainscoting wouldn't stick out more than the door trim. I started filling the nail holes and other areas this morning. He still has to put another coat of joint compound on the wall below the board for the wainscoting.

The door trim below looks off but it's not, it's the way the lighting hits it.

The wall with all the blue tape is really wavy (bastard builder). So my husband decided he would rather have the board straight and fill the areas between the wall and board that didn't meet correctly. I did that this morning too. After I filled the spaces I realized we are putting a cap on the wainscoting and I didn't need to fill it.  :thatsright:

My husband is taking Friday off so he can get a lot more done this weekend. We are going to get the crown molding on friday for the hallway. We got the builder's supplier where they get all their trim. It is a HUGE difference in price from Home Depot or Lowes so anyone in Austin who would be interested I would be happy to tell you their name.

After he gets the joint compound finished he will sand it then put up the vertical boards for the wainscoting. Then I will fill all the holes etc then prime. After you prime you caulk then paint.

Decided to put a few treads on the stairs to see how it will look. The stain matches exactly with our cabinets. There will be quarter round in knotty Alder stained the same as the treads around the bottom (underneath) of each tread. It covers any not so perfect areas and also gives the impression of beefier stair treads.

The pictures with the newels we just have them sitting on the step, they haven't been cut to the proper height yet.  I am overwhelmed by the painting we have to do. Nothing has been painted the final trim color. My husband hasn't even finished the trim yet.  :panic:

The camera doesn't seem to show our floors correctly, it's richer then it appears in pictures and there is a color in the floor that goes well with our cabinets and now stairs.

I am ready for this to be over, I'm sure my husband is past that point. The bathroom is really starting to come together too. I think it's going to be really cute.

BEG, what exactly do you intend to do to protect those treads? Granted, you've got a boatload of polyurethane on them, but even with poly, they're going to get worn with traffic unless you come up with some sort of covering - sometimes sections of carpeting are glued to the middle of the treads.

We will cross that bridge when we get to it. The polyurethane that he used is meant for floors and stair treads. He has three coats on it now, he is thinking of doing one more sanding and another coat.

Edited to add: There will be nothing GLUED to those treads...ever. Well as long as we live here.

This has nothing to do with the stairs but my husband finally put up the light fixture that I've had sitting in a box in my dinning room for months. It wasn't an easy install. We put old style Edison bulbs in the light fixture.

Doesn't make sense to have nice looking floors/stairs if you are just going to cover them up. The polyurethanes on the market today are developed to take and withstand a lot of abuse.

Just come out and admit it, you want me.  :naughty:

We got it at Crate and Barrel several years ago (before we moved to CA). It's called Basque, we got the hutch when we moved to Austin at the Crate and Barrel outlet.

Here is their description of the style:

Quote
Hand-hewn in oversized proportions, this 104" table has the heft and character of a European farmhouse antique. The simple, rustic design has substantial legs and a hand-planed plank top with authentic peg detailing. Open grain and knots are unique to each piece. The rich honey finish is waxed to a soft sheen.

We don't have the bench.

My parents had furniture similar to this in their home. Has survived for almost 40 yrs, 8 children , 15 grandchildren and innumerable others. Cushions have been  reupholstered/replaced several times but furniture still there. That was in the main living room. They did have some really nice stuff in the other living room that children were warned upon penalty of a major asswhooping to stay off unless granted permission.

Granted, the treads look beautiful, but sometimes you see some sort of protective material - whether carpeting or something else - on the treads in the center, leaving the outer edges uncovered.

Just a thought. BEG says she ain't goin' there, and that's fine. Just wondering how long it'll take before the treads need to be refinished.

He put the treads on the stairs today. The wainscoting on the wall downstairs isn't painted yet (only primed) and needs another sanding from some final patching.  There will be stained trim that goes under each tread that he hasn't installed yet. It hides imperfections and makes the tread look thicker. Everything for the stairway is painted or stained and ready for him to finish.

He had to wait to finish the wainscoting at the bottom of the stairs until he put the treads on, that is why the wainscoting isn't finished yet.

The upper part you see here is just dry fit. He hasn't glued and nailed it yet.

His "wood shop" is my garage and the driveway. I'm sure the neighbors are sick of listening to his saw every Saturday and Sunday morning. Thank God they are still building in this neighborhood, otherwise I don't think the neighbors would be as understanding.

I forgot about one thing he hadn't finished yet. The handrail that will be going around the balcony. He has to bend it to the shape of the balcony. He made his own jig and is doing it right now as I type.

It's a PITA. The old timers used steam to "loosen up" the wood.

BTW, my "shop" is the garage, and the wife still tries to get her mitts on space in there. NOT-GONNA-HAPPEN..........well, maybe.  :thatsright:

Yeah he knows about steam and bending wood but this railing is in strips and made to bend with out steam. You glue each strip to the previous one, when the glue dries you sand the glue off the surface, cut it to size and then stain/poly.  The part you see is the top of the railing, each strip is notched so it will fit exactly in the right spot to the next strip. The profile of the railing is the same as the other railing. It's really pretty cool how it works.

I just ordered three ceiling lights for the upstairs hallway. It will look much better when those are up. He also still needs to lay the wood floor in the hallway upstairs. We have it, he just hasn't had time to put it down yet.

Now I need to find a table for along the stair wall, a sofa table (extra long) for behind the couch and my husband is going to make a cool square or round coffee table (ill show you the idea later) so I can finally put the too long coffee table back upstairs in the game room.  I'm going to get several lamps to lighten this place up and finally hang a few things on the wall.

My new light in the entryway. The ceiling isn't tall enough for a huge light.  It is a smaller version of the one over the stairs. I think I need a dimmer switch on that light or lower watt bulbs.

So we went to this cool place called REVIVAL. It's a place tht takes junk and makes it super cool (if you are into that sort of thing, whitch I am). Here is a link: LINK (http://Www.revivaltx.com)

We bought a little something.  :-)

It's a super old ratty ladder with super old boards used as shelves. Don't look at the stuff sitting on it, I just sat this stuff from around the room on it. I'm going to get a smaller super cool lamp to put on it and decorate it and show you all later.

Here is a closer look at the ladder/shelf thing. It's blurry because it is friggen dark in this room and I took the picture with my phone.

I think I'm going to put a stack of quilts on both ends of the bottom shelf.

I had this bell jar (got it super cheap awhile ago at Hobby Lobby). Bought these three birds today at Hobby Lobby for $3.50 each. Looks way more expensive.

I have seen this same thing (what ever its called) at pottery barn and restoration hardware before for much more than I paid for it at Hobby Lobby 1/2 off.

I think I need to take the birdhouse off and put something else in its place. I have an old (really really old) birdcage that might look good there.

I really want to paint this clock with milk paint. My husband says yes, my mom says NOOOOOO,

I used to have real dried hydrangias from my brothers wedding. They were about the same color, maybe a little lighter. I think I'm going to get some real hydrangia and let them dry. We had a hydrangia bush when we lived in CA. I used to cut several off the bush a week and put them in a vase. So pretty. I bought the little sign today for about $2.50.

I also got these metal letters 50% off today. I may put them on the shelf in the study.

This picture is an old window with a lithograph stuck on the back. They had a lot of cool collages and stuff on old windows at REVIVAL. I'm going to try one myself.

I also got these at Hobby Lobby today for $30 a piece. I was going to get just one but then thought I could hang the pair next to each other in the hallway down to our bedroom. They are about 24x36. I really like what they say.

I think we need some real art in this house. I only have two real "art" pictures. One is an original that my husbands cousin painted, we paid $1300 for it and my father in law gave me a signed painting he bought in the early 70's (that i have always loved) of a hippie chick. I can't remember the name of the picture or the artist but its worth some bucks. It's in a really nice frame too.

No, I wouldn't say it looks like shit. But I do think the area in front of the stairs looks too busy. With the wainscoting, especially.
A long, low table is a fine idea, but to my eye the ladder is simply too tall.

I'm not a real fan of antiques like that anyway. You and your husband went to extreme lengths to put together a very spiffy, well-apportioned and painted area and the ladder? Well, it doesn't work for me.

But hey, it's your house and if you're happy with it, that's all that counts.  :cheersmate:

It doesn't cover up the wainscoting. This room is HUGE. The ceilings are well over 20' (I think they are 24'). It needs huge furniture to make it look proportional.  We thought bout a narrow long table and held a bench we had up to the level a table would be, it was lost in the massiveness of the room.

I do understand that my style is not most people's style. I love old things (even fake old things), I like to be surrounded by them. Not antiques you can't touch that also look like they have never been used, but the crap that a lot of people would throw away.  I like to take it and make "art" (subjective as it may be) out of it.

I would call my style extremely relaxed and eclectic. Don't worry about offending me, if you think something is ugly and stupid looking, tell me. Wait until you see our plans for above the windows. We have two rows of windows (all windows have plantation shutters) and there is about 4 1/2' of space between the lower and upper windows. My husband is going to build a shelf and we are going to put the stuff you don't like on it.  It's going to be marvelously tacky, like a well appointed Chili's.  :-)

Trust me, BEG, I have no problem being direct. If I thought it looks like shit, I'd say so.

But I realize that I'm not viewing the area in the same way you are. I'm looking at photos whereas you're looking at the real deal. It makes a difference.

The thing I like about Applebee's and Chilis and all the tacky crap they nail on the wall is that it's permanently welded to the wall. People can't steal that tacky crap.

The little blessings in life are vewy important.  :-)

Aside from freaking out about possible tetanus infection  :whatever: I like that you balanced the quilts/blankets on the bottom shelf.  Before with the quilts and birdhouse, it wasn't balanced from a color perspective.   :-)

I agonize over things like that.  I decided to do a all white/black/brown living room.  I have pale blue walls, so everything else needs to be one of those colors.  It is a friggen struggle, but it will be so worth it.  SO moved in, and now we have to combine stuff.  He had some ink sketches, and I did, so we combined them on the wall.  Then, I have a white clay pipe from Williamsburg and some shells that I will put in shadow boxes to give texture.

Do you think I should paint the clock I have sitting on the shelf?  My mom got it for us years ago, on our 7th anniversary I believe. The hállway color is Sherwin Williams 6108 Latte LINK (http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW6108-latte/)

The color all over the house is called Kilim Beige (6106) and is several shades lighter on the color sample card.

I think you put some sort of voodoo curse on me. It still friggen hurts. Especially if I yawn. We went out for steak last night and I thought I was going to die. It tasted so good I chewed right through the pain.  I had the most excellent ribeye, med rare and a back and blue margarita.  Maybe the margarita helped.

Cap on wainscoting and 1/4 round at baseboard. Neither has been sanded, filled or painted yet. From the garage to the bedroom

From the bedroom to the garage door. The wall on the right is so wavy it isn't funny. I don't know how he is going to hide that.

Half bath, builders grade toilet and sink (saw the sink at lowes for $58, no joke).  Im getting a new sink and toilet. Again cap and 1/4 round has not been painted yet. I need to junk up this bathroom with some of my trash to treasure art.

Trim my husband put at the top of the medicine cabinet (he has not put it on permanently yet). Neither the trim or medicine cabinet has been painted yet. Got the cool knob at Hobby Lobby.

Drunk me from last night. This was after two Black and Blue margaritas at Longhorn steakhouse. I was feeling F I N E fine.

Well, I wouldn't worry about your lockjaw unless you start frothing at the mouth. Once that happens, it's too late. We have to put you down.  :-)
