Hey DUers, I need some help in buying a bicycle.
Yes, I can't afford to drive my car anymore, so I'm looking to buy a bicycle but don't know where to start. My last bike was a single gear Schwinn with foot brakes back in the fifties. I need something that can climb hills, but I don't need anything fancy or expensive. I am an old lady, but I am strong cuz I work out with weights regularly. Basically, I spend a lot of time at the gym doing cardio on various equipment including stationary bikes so I thought why not do my cardio in the fresh air while getting my chores done. I can jog places but I wouldn't be able to transport groceries, hence the need for some wheels.

Also, I can't spend more than $300 and it would go on a credit card cuz I'm pretty broke, however, with gas between $4 and $5 a gallon, what I spend on gas I could use to pay off the bike.

Any suggestions?

I hope it's okay to post this in GD. I posted in the lounge but am not getting any replies. It is somewhat related to our economic situation and gas prices in California.

 :lmao: Yeah! Right.

2. About a month ago I bought a 7-speed Schwinn "Clairmont Cruiser"

View profile
26-inch with fat street tires and a big, soft seat at Walmart for $165. I love it! I added a cheep digital speedometer, and so far I've put just over a hundred miles on it. All I need now is saddle bags so I don't have to wear my backpack when I ride it to the grocery store.

BTW: I'm 67 and haven't biked in years, so if I can get around town on this bike, just about anyone can.

WOW!!! A hundred miles in one month.

21. Except that Walmart bikes are notoriously unreliable

View profile
Doesn't seem to matter which manufacturer, either. They must get deals on factory ****-ups or something.

Seriously, Cleita, avoid the Walmart bikes. Get one from a dedicated bike store or from craigslist.
I live in a big bicycling town and all the people here who buy used bikes to recondition always put
"NO WALMART BIKES!!!" in their ads when they are looking to buy stock.

We just bought a used Giant commuter bike for my wife for $175 in great shape and they threw in a rack for the car.

She loves it.

Bullshit.

Fortunately, this county is very bike friendly and we have bike paths all over.

And finally what Cleita was waiting for.

I ask because my husband has a bike we're looking to get rid of. It's a mountain bike, but it's in fine shape. I bet he'd part with it for the shipping...

And by the way, the Cleita primitive's not lying about her age; she's an old 'un.

And the first time she blows out her knee, she's back on the Senior Van route.

And notice that "she's broke" but will put it on a credit card; i.e., I'm gonna default on that shit anyway.

Apologies if this is moving too afar from the OP, but what you point out, Coach, spawned a realization. The DUmmies in fits of rage and hate constantly declare that the Republican party is on the verge of extinction due to it's racist aging membership and imaginary failure to attract younger folk.

It seems to me that the average age of the DUmmies is darn near the age of the Earth I was working today. The world will be a better place, no doubt, when the the liberal mooching class is brought under control by the good and decent voters, and the burnt-out, aging hippies have sent out their final good vibes. But, if I were Skimmer I'd be seriously concerned that the pillars holding up the DUmp are seriously seasoned citizens that run off any new, fresh members through their paranoid troll-hunting. He has a serious demographic problem brewing right under his nose, but I'm sure he is totally oblivious.

I'm sure there had to have been some DUmmie poll asking their age at some time. But, DUmmies lie, so any said poll is worthless.

I would bet the average age of the Conservative Cave is less than the DUmp by a good margin.

Holy cow.  My dad isn't even that old.  I know he isn't dumb enough to go riding around on some bicycle. :old:

That is one thing I miss about California, the many bike lanes and bike trails.  There are bike trails out here, but few bike lanes, so bike riding in town is a bit of a risky proposition.  I think Omaha is trying to become more bike friendly though.

Yep it sucks to have a marxist as POSOTUS and a communist as governor. At least you voted for this shit condition, me they are taking against my will.

I noticed all the bike trails and bike lanes when we lived in California.  There are a lot of bike lanes here in Austin too although the bike riders in CA seem more aggressive than in Austin. The CA riders ALWAYS thought they had the right of way. I never put much thought into it until my husband had a seizure and couldn't drive for 6 months (that will end in December).   He rides his bike to the train station, rides the train until he gets to his stop then from his stop to work. Total of around 15 miles a day (not including the train ride). He just bought a new bike, a Fuju Cross. It looks like the one below (his is white too). It was expensive but he deserves it and he will continue to ride it after he can start driving again.

I take him and pick him up sometimes too. Like this morning it was pretty cold outside so we put his bike in his truck and I drove him to the train station. He rode his bike from the station stop to work then back home. He went to the bike store after dinner with our son to get a new helmet, a warn hat and some gloves because he said his hands were freezing this morning. Sometimes I take and pick him up at work too. I don't mind and I would do it for the rest of my life if I had to but I will be glad when he can drive again.  :-)

How about ditching that gym membership to pay for gas as a start? A set of hand weights at home should be adequate for a wan her age to get a good strength workout in a couple times a week.

They are talking about gas prices, but not one of them is slamming obama for it? When Bush was in office, it was all his fault. Now that obama is in office, you don't hear a peep. I can guarantee that within 30 days of Romney being elected, you will hear that it is all his fault.

Wearing a bicyclr helmet is the law out there, even for adults??? I knew that kids under the age of 16? have to wear them, but not adults...

What's wrong with walmart bikes, they are the same manufacturers than anywhere else.. and the assembler just has to put on the wheels, and sometimes the handle bars
