Union kings like Metal Polishers Local 81-2A's Hector Lopez live lavish lives as members suffer

BY Brian Kates and Benjamin Lesser
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERs
Sunday, June 27th 2010, 4:00 AM
As president of Metal Polishers Local 8A-28A, Hector Lopez has an unusual living arrangement - the lavish suburban mansion he calls home is owned by a company he bargains with.

The Cadillac Escalade he drives appears to have been bought with help from the union's strike fund, and he collects a salary that's $40,000 a year over what's allowed.

All of this for a union that's swimming in red ink with cash on hand to cover only a week of operations.

Lopez is one of a handful of New York City labor leaders who, critics say, use their unions as personal ATMs, enriching themselves at the expense of dues-paying members.

While the rank-and-file struggle with a faltering economy, leaders of some of these smaller boutique unions put family on the payroll, buy luxury sedans and fly off to weekend conferences in Hawaii and Florida.

It takes a special kind of parasite to suck-up to the union mentality.
The more the union EMPLOYEE (not workers, EMPLOYEES - there is a difference), are screwed by their union leash holders, the better!
In the near future we will be seeing MILLIONS of union slugs being told their golden calf pensions are EMPTY!

...and I will snarkle.....

"I will snakle"... "I will Snakle?"

My 13 year old daughter doesn't even talk like that.... 50 year old grown man "snarkles" at labor unions. It figures.

Spoken like a true scab groupie, who's never done a days work in his life, sitting home nodding to high minded theories about labor economics and the nightly Fox TV brain washings, when he is not spanking himself off to Tom Clancy novels, as if he even knows what a patriot is... Jingoism in the service of profiteering child molesters who exploit the poor, and the Bush Crime-Clinton Family follies over the last 30 years.

He hates unions because they attempt to negotiate fair, sustainable wages, even as NAFTA, capital flight and open boarders derail and deflate the American dream.  He blames labor leaders who make 60% of your average middle manager of a fortune 500 company, but who do 250% of the work of a middle manager in a Fortune 500 company.

Republicans and democrats have let public unions grow fat for a reason, and fought private sector unions tooth and nail, just before running the entire country off a cliff.  So now, everyone is down on public sector unions because they want to save money-- they have a scapegoat-- an we'll never see the money that the Wall Street Profiteers stole with the help of the Bush/Clinton Crime families and Mr. Bubble-- Alan Greenspan at the Fed.   It's all in airports in Korea and some Korean's pocket... like the Korean guy who owns 95% of all the "Indian" casinos in the US.

Everything in America is knotted up, but this sissy wants to "snarkle" at labor leaders and union employees, most likely because he could not get into a union (either too damn lazy, or has the personality that he demonstrates here), or his family made money exploiting labor from way back, or he just hates to see someone working with their hands making more than he makes shuffling papers and sitting home working himself with his hand.  Try the other hand Patriot Gamer, you might have a break through and turn the channel so you can see the world as it actually is and not as your friends Sean, Glenn and Bill tell you it is.

You union bashing ass clowns make me laugh with all your high sounding, selfless proclamations, and patriot logos and pledges, and maudlin "thank you's for your service" while you miss the whole point of America.

You're a bunch of toll booth collectors who's dream job is busting people on some power trip to get even for having you asses kicked in when you were just a skinny kid.

What does it cost you for a union worker to make a living wage and have some time off for his kids?  You think he sends the money offshore to projects that help foreign nationals become billionaires?  Billionaires are at records numbers the world over.  We'll, if he shops at America's Company Store (Walmart- the union busting Bush/Clinton family sponsor), he has no choice but to send money to China, right?

But working families spend, and spending here in the US keeps the American dream alive.  Saving shareholders money, puts money in CEO's pockets, as they find ways to spend the rest of it overseas on some hair brained project with corrupt local officials who want to send their kids to Harvard or Yale.

You think everyone is their own best negotiator and should only be permitted to negotiate their own salary, while big, rich, powerful business interests get the most talented lawyers to make sure they save enough money to make everyone rich enough to sail by you in cars that cost more than your house.

Snarkle away, whatever the hell that means, weak heart power groupies.   I guess you'll be most happy when America is all the way 3rd world, and Russian gangsters own all the sports teams, and everything from highways to hospitals are named after CEOs who make 10,000 times your lifetime salary in one year.

At least you'll be rooting for the strong, powerful guy; that way nobody will notice how weak and dumb you really are in your Walmart chairs and velcro shoes.

Americans used to root for the underdog, the little guy, the worker. Now, they sit home and blog and post how they root for the monopolists and business reporter porn stars who tell them what to think, however dumb, unworkable, plain evil and illogical.

Snarkle snarkle, Sh@t stains!

Can't we play with it for awhile?  When I was working iron I worked around a LOT of these kinds of folks.  I never met a union thug who was good enough to pull my lead/carry my rod(s) or even change the temperature setting on my welding machine.  Most of them were a bunch of losers.

When I was working union in Hawaii (because my non union job got finished in half the time) the other guys on the job were coming over and telling me to slow down because the job had to last until August ... this was in June.  I was putting down 3 times the weld at 2 times the quality as the solid 'union' welders.

It's pretty shameful when an elected official robs from the people whom placed him in office.  Crooks often find there ways into positions of power; whether it's the government, business, or a union.  I'm even more saddened though that within a union their are means to prevent this.  Yet, the membership of that union chose to close their eyes and not practice due diligence in all of their dealings.  Sigh...

Tex, I like you bud, but the narcissistic comments really are a bit much.  As for the request to slow down, yes they do sound ludicrous.  You have to remember though, that it's not necessarily that union which is pushing for things like that.  It's generally the contractors or sub-contractors pushing for it.  Unfortunately, it's often the case with big business and big projects that politics does play a large part in certain things.  It's horrible, I agree, but it's hard to single out a particular party when so many others are encouraging it for their own ends.

You're so full of shit fart knuckle.

The contractors are always told to slow down by the Union workers.  I've seen it first hand and I see them bullshitting everyday.  They hold management hostage and continue to make the bottomline rise and rise until you price yourself out of work.

Really, what's with the hostility?  Personal attacks also?  Tisk tisk.

If you're attempting to stroke yourself, you really shouldn't have used the term always.  As even one fluke case to the contrary refutes your position in entirety, it's just a poor choice to structure an argumentative debate around.  Thankfully, since this site's first been created I've been here for robust discussion and chatting with friends so I'm not too concerned with technicalities of those sorts.

Crazy, I respect your views on what you witnessed from your position.  I'll just say this, a union contract is merely legal frame work.  Just like a businesses incorporation paperwork.  It can be used properly or abused, but neither are always used properly or never abused.  Cheers

Yeah, they're legal paperwork.  Most of it is written to benefit the worker and the union the worker is paying.  When I was working in PA I was forced to hire a union operator even though I ran the crane on all the other jobs to hang the iron then I would climb up and weld with everyone else.  On this job I was informed by the union that I could only move the operator one time a day.  We had a bobcat to pull iron to where we needed it then we used the crane to hang it.  If I wanted to move the operator more than that I had to hire another operator.

Well, a couple of days into the job the union operator came up to me and 'informed' me that if I would pay him time and a half all the time he would let me move him as much as I wanted.  I said "So you're willing to screw a union brother so you can make time and a half?" and he said "Yup, I gotta look out for me and mine."

That told me all I needed to know about that particular union.

I wish our little seagull had stayed around a bit longer.  So much of what he said was so much bullshit it wasn't funny, but that's okay.  He's back at DU telling his bouncy stories of how he showed up us rethuglican freeper fundies in WalMart somewhere, and all the customers were applauding him as he left.

For the record, as long as I've been "in the tools" at two utilities now, I've found that the one I'm in now is much more low key, much less intrusive, has no political aims (at least at the local level), and as a whole we have a much better relationship with management.  When I was IBEW with SCE, my dues were literally six times more than what I'm paying now, they made it a point to "advise" (read: order) me how I should cast my vote, and the management/worker relationship was outright hostile in many cases.

It's when unions get big enough to mistakenly believe that a company can't function without them that they run into serious trouble.

I got loaned out to the local electric company for 6 months once. They were forever tellin' me to slow down since I was makin' their rank and file look bad! When that didn't work they would send guys and gals by to try and get me into lame conversations to slow me down. Finally they gave me a job off site so I wasn't so obviously smolin' the union parasites.
