Senate GOP hands Dems oil ultimatum

Senate Republicans have threatened to block nearly all other bills pending before the August recess if Democrats refuse to vote with them on expanding offshore drilling.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said bills that do not pertain to energy can wait until after the August recess, with gas prices now surpassing $4 per gallon. McConnell and top Republicans indicated Wednesday they would oppose any procedural votes to take up other legislation, which require 60 votes to succeed.

“We think there is nothing more important that we can do right now than to deal with the Number One issue of the country,” McConnell said. “This is the biggest issue since terrorism right after 9/11. People are pounding on their desks, saying, Why don’t these people get together and do something about this problem?”

Following swift Senate action on the narrow energy bill, Reid wanted the Senate to approve a massive defense authorization bill, an overhaul of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, legislation to protect reporters’ sources, an extension of expiring energy tax incentives, and a major package of 33 bills held up by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.).

But Republicans are planning to keep the Senate on the energy issue until their demands are resolved. The massive housing-rescue package might be the only other measure that gets valuable floor time before the August recess.

The blood is in the water.  This is their chance to get the majority back this fall and their jumpin on it.  I'd expect them to settle back into their comfortable beurocracy after the election.

Well, BHO hasn't had the result he was hoping for with this "tour", as most of us bitter Americans are also clinging to our wallets and driving less.

What the socialists don't realize is that the word "TEMPORARY" is attached to this whole thing. Republicans (or at least the center-right and conservatives) realize that drilling is not the end all of this situation. Same stuff happened in the '70s. OPEC dropped prices in order to prevent more concerted drilling efforts by US entities. I'm willing to wager that they'll do that again, but this time, hopefully, we can say no thanks and just go on doing what we need to do.

People don't seem to realize that the only real reason to drill is to free up the cash flow in order to seriously focus on the alternatives, including building much needed infrastructure to support things like hydrogen stations for fuel cells or charging stations for all-electric vehicles.

We have the technology and know-how to do this, and do it right. Problem is that the .gov is over-regulating every possible avenue for innovation that it doesn't make those efforts seem attractive.
I would beg to differ with the notion that the current administration is *NOT* the most transparent in history. It certainly is...because you can see right through them.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

I heard on the radio (ABC News) that this bill was not brought up for a vote by the Senate leadership.  Which means Harry Reid.

 :bird:

I'll see if I can find more information.
