15 years ago, I bought a portable sawmill...(WoodMizer)...roughly $20,000 for all the things I wanted. It was to be for my hobby and other stuff I wanted. They would deliver it for free if I had some logs on hand and let them demonstrate it when the came. Well, a nice young fellow and his dad brought the sawmill in on a Saturday morning....good crowd, good show.
The last fellow to show up for the 10:00 demonstration came up in a new 4X4 Chevy pickup, with a new 4-wheeler in the back and a back glass gun rack full of guns. He started asking me questions about what I planned to do with the sawmill and how much money did I think I could make with it. When I told him I just bought it for a hobby and something to play with and didn't plan on making any money with it, he was just floored. He said something like, "You just spent $20,000 for a toy to play with ???!!!...and don't plan on making money with it. I can't believe that."
I sort of leaned around him so I could see his truck and said something like, "Well, some people buy a $20,000 4X4 pickup, a $4,000 4-wheeler, a $1,000 rifle and go sit in trees hunting for meat to feed their family." He laughed and said he got my point. He said he hoped I enjoyed playing with my sawmill....and I have.
As long as your hobbies don't deprive your family of a decent living....go for it.
