Apology after calling Obama a liar
WASHINGTON - -- When President Barack Obama addressed Congress Wednesday night, he got an unusual greeting: "You lie!"
The comment from Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., could be heard throughout the House chamber and on television in response to Obama's remark that his health insurance plan would not extend to illegal immigrants.
"I've never seen anything like that before," said Rep. Earl Pomeroy, D-N.D. "We do not invite the president of the United States into the House of Representatives and hurl insults." Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Obama's foe in the 2008 election, called the remark "disrespectful" and called on Wilson to apologize.

So where was the outrage when Dingy Harry Reid called President Bush a liar and refused to apologize? Granted, that didnt happen during a joint session of congress but it was the same level of disrespect or worse.

Congressman Joseph Wilson (R-South Carolina) standing up and calling Bo a liar; was it okay, or was it wrong?
Of course, he was speaking truth to power, and we all know how the Democrats, liberals, and primitives like that, speaking truth to power.
And he most assuredly guaranteed his re-election for life, if that's what he wishes to do, given the patriotic nature of South Carolinians.
However, I have mixed feelings about this. I could be wrong, but while I recall Democrats in Congress calling George Bush a liar, and publicly so, I don't recall them interrupting a speech. They might have, but I don't remember, or missed it.
It's probably a debate over "style;" since it works so effectively for me in real life, I think it would've been better if Republicans, every time Bo lied, simply got up from their seats and their backs turned, walked out the chamber in utter silence.

I was sort of hoping this would happen, every time Bo lied, another Republican congressman would do that.
I'm sure Bo told at least 178 lies, and so it would've been great, these Republican congressmen walking out one at a time.

Nothing wrong with it at all. That man....sent to D.C. to represent the people of his district in South Carolina...said exactly what his constituents and most of America are feeling right now.
And he's got the back bone that most of us have been saying Republican Congress Critters need.
If he hadn't said it last night when he did...no one would have ever known about it because the MSM wouldn't have covered it.

I just wish he hadn't been so quick to turn around and apologize. He said what most people in this country are feeling. IMHO he truly spoke on behalf of the American public and there is no reason to apologize for that.

He should have done it in another venue. He was right in what he said. He was wrong in how he did it. I'd think with your job and everything, that you'd understand just how out of line that really was.

As I said in the poll thread...had he said this in any other venue none of us would know about it....because the MSM would have ignored it.
He did it in the only venue and at the only time that it wouldn't have gotten sandbagged by the MSM.

I feel the venue was wrong. I can understand getting caught up emotionally, but it would have been a stronger statement had he stood and exited with quiet dignity.
If he was sure of not being re-elected he must have felt he had nothing to lose, but I don't know the particulars in his case.
I wonder how many others in the audience really wanted to do as Wilson did and secretly admire him?

While what he said was the truth, that he apologized for having said it (not sure if he apologized for what he said, but just that he was out of line shouting it) doesn't bother me strategy-wise, and here's why.
If someone in the WH or in the MSM tries to hang it over his head, they're going to look petty. He apologized, end of story. The American people are a forgiving people if you come out and say you did something you shouldn't have done It's when pols start lying and hemming and hawing that people get tired of it and get upset with the individual. The word is out there that Dear Leader is lying. When it's demonstrated over and over again to be true, even people who don't recognize it now and who aren't already little cult followers will have no choice but to admit that, while maybe he shouldn't have yelled it, it was still true, and wonder if they wouldn't have done the exact same thing if they were in his shoes.
IMO, the focus needs to be on Dear Leader saying anyone who misrepresents what's being offered will be called out. You see, that works both ways, and there's no group that's been more dishonest about what's being offered than Dear Leader and the Dems. So yeah, let's call out Dear Leader for the lies he's telling since that's what he wants. Dear Leader needs to learn to keep his big mouth shut or he might just get what he's asks for, and in this case, he will. And who better to give it to him than those of us who are the defenders of the truth.

Southerners are as a whole polite, genteel creatures. Some people mistake their mild ways as a sign of weakness, lack of spine/backbone/brains. Some assume that because of their mild manners that they can be easily run over, used, abused and otherwise be mistreated. THAT'S A DAMN MISTAKE. When a southerner has had enough, he's had enough. A southerner is not afraid to get in your face and inform you of that fact. ....and he'll back his stand with every fiber of his being. To bad they outlawed duels.

If the WH or the MSM try and make a big deal of it, they're going to come off looking vindictive and hateful towards someone who immediately said they were sorry and shouldn't have done it. If he had dragged it out over days, it would have been worse. Now he just looks like one of us regualar folks that made a mistake and owned up to it. Everyone can relate to that.

It's already law that if they show up at the ER the hospital has to treat them,. ....so technically, healthcare for illegals doesn't have to be in the bill for them to get free healthcare. So The Big "O" ain't lying....................much.

The lie is about illegals being able to get insurance coverage. There have been a couple of amendments shot down that would have required proof of citizenship to apply for insurance coverage.

Respect for the office of the president went out the window the day that Obama character walked through the door. It is very difficult to sit out here in the heartland and defend the need to respect an office which is occupied by a mindless puppet who has no respect for who he is suppose to be.

While I agree that doing it 1--in that particular venue was wrong, 2--just because the other side did it for eight years to Bush doesn't make it right now, I'll admit I did a little bit of a fist-pump when I heard that.

According to the Yahoo article I read this morning, this issue is a galvanizing one for the Dems. They're outraged at Wilson's disrespect (and it was disrespectful, regardless how truthful the statement really was) and they think it's going to be a bit of a battle cry for them in trying to shove that POS legislation down our throats.
Even though the House tends to be "lustier" than the Senate, there is a certain decorum that's expected. Wilson stepped beyond that.
Personally, I wouldn't piss on Lord Zero if he was on fire and I loathe the ground he walks on, but that doesn't mean I call him a liar in public like that. Wilson's got to have better control of himself than that.
I agree with USA4ME. Wilson's quick apology basically took some of the steam out of the overall argument. Pressing the point makes the accuser look petty.
And I'd also agree that this stunt helped Wilson's cause because it put him in the national spotlight.

Sure Wilson was rude by breaking decorum in the house chamber, but the story really should be he was right. HC may not cover illegal immigrants, but it's not enforceable. There needs to be stronger words in the Bill to address this.

I think it's really sad that the office of President of the United States has reached a point where there is little to no respect anymore. It started with Clinton's disregard of the "office" which in turn lowered the People's respect for the office. It continued throughout Bush's two terms with the continual downward spiral by the MSN and late night television. Now there is someone in office again...that half the country doesn't respect the individual...and the individual himself is intent on destroying what the office itself has represented for centuries.
It makes me sad for our country.

I have to say, based solely on the precedent set by the democrats towards GWB, that it was perfectly acceptable. Rush said it today: This is not politics as usual - there's no you wash me I'll wash you - this is a fundamental change into the way EVERYTHING that involves health and medicine is handled from now until the end of time.

Given your past history, I find it the height of hypocrisy for you, of all people, to demand an apology for heckling an elected official or disrupting a meeting or speech. Have you so quickly forgotten why you were removed from a Bush rally in Portsmouth on February 16, 2006? Or the numerous times you hounded Jeb Bradley, your predecessor? At least he wasn't afraid to face his constituents AND his critics.
Over the past three years, it has become increasingly apparent that you, Congresswoman, are a hypocrite--perfectly willing to dish it out, but completely unable to take it when it starts (rightly) coming back your way. Consider this before you point any fingers at Congressman Wilson.
So, in closing, if anyone is going to issue an apology, might I suggest you issue one first?

As far as I am aware, there are no actual consequences for censure, if his stance is popular in his home district he would be better off telling them to stuff it.

The man is still the President of the United States. You don't treat him with such blatant disrespect, especially when you know the eyes of the entire nation are watching.

I'd submit that it's the office that deserves respect - not necessarily the man holding the office.
Big difference.
As I recall, most of the military who served around Slick Willie had no respect for the man, but their duties compelled them to show respect for the office. This, of course, they did because it was their duty.
On the other hand, most of the military who served around GWB had respect for both him as a man, and the office he held.
I think it has to be tough on those in uniform who have to serve alongside Lord Zero. If it were me, I don't believe I could serve in that capacity at all. Maybe they'd have to fire me. :coffee:
