Soda and weightloss
« on: April 16, 2012, 02:15:12 PM »
How much weight can you lose in a short amount of time (say about a month or two) if you stop drinking soda and only drink water or unsweetened ice tea?

My Coke habit (regular, not diet) has gotten out of hand and I believe it is playing a large part in some weight gain I have put on since moving back to Texas. Also living with my mom didn't help either. I have also cut out crap food like chips, fries, etc. I'm eating salads and fruit as well as skinless chicken (not fried), fish, etc.

I should admit that I Only recently started.

My mum always advised to drink an 8 oz glass of water before meals, you are more likely to eat smaller portions.. Unfortunately chocolate is my biggest downfall...

I am not big or anything, but I struggle with keeping my weight an and ideal amount since I love soda's and food.  When I have cut them out and just drank water, crystal light, etc...  I have lost 10lbs or more in about a month maybe month and a half.

I gave up sweet tea for water, but I made some other diet changes, so I wouldn't be able to give you any accurate anecdotal data to directly answer your question. But you can always go back to 1 pound of fat is 3,500 calories, approximately 4 sticks of butter. A negative 500 calorie daily average would reduce your fat weight by 1 pound a week.

The thought of 4 sticks of butter makes me want to puke.

I have never really tracked my daily calorie intake because I have always found it rather easy to maintain my weight. In fact, about a year ago I was underweight and drinking ensure because I felt I was too underweight.  I got down to 113 and I'm 5'7". I needed to put on 10 lbs. I did and then some. I feel like a walrus.

Usually, you'll notice some weight loss(approx 1/2 - 1lb) just by cutting out the sugar.  Doing the -500 calorie/day thing is good, it just depends on how efficiently your body adapts to the demands put on in.  I pretty much cut out all soda, and drink unsweet decaf tea(sweetened with a decaf mint teabag).  But I'm not religiously following a diet.  I need to, but just haven't stepped it up.  I did have a Diet Coke yesterday and wasn't thrilled with it.  There are some food calculators out there that are good.  I use the food tracker from livestrong.com and the food tracker from sparkpeople.com.  They're also both good websites with alot of good info.  Good luck.

Have you tried Coke Zero?   Tastes like real Coke without the nasty after taste Diet Coke has.

According to the 17-Day Diet doctor, drinking soda -- even diet soda -- tends to lean one toward sugary stuff anyway. There may be some truth to that. In addition, when obese people drink diet soda, they tend to make up the difference with food.

Water's a good strategy.  :cheersmate:

It takes about a week to wean yourself off of soda.  The sugar is addicting.  But you'll feel better afterwards.

I switched from regular full sugar coke to coke zero more than a year ago as part of an attempt to purge as much sugar as possible from my diet.  Given I was drinking upwards of 1/2 gal a day of the stuff , the removal of such large amounts of sugar has made a noticeable impact on weight and feeling of well-being.

I had my first coke since I started this no soda thing. It seems really sweet.

I have been eating a lot of avacados, tomatoes, bananas and apples. In fact, I seem almost addicted. I am drinking a ton of whater too. I swear my skin looks better.  I have already lost about 5 lbs.

I tried drinking a coke after months of drinking nothing but water. It tasted terrible. I couldn't drink it all.

Stop the bananas and apples. Fruit is very high in sugar. If you want fruit, stick to berries (any kind) and melons. Small amounts of fresh pineapple is ok.

When I lost all that weight about a year ago, I counted carbs, not calories. Ate lots of protein and most vegetables. No corn, beans (except green) and potatoes. Carrots are fine if they are raw. Same with tomatoes. Both develop a high sugar content when cooked.

Pop has enormous amount of sugar, and caffeine will also slow down weight loss.

Fat is ok if you eat lots of protein, because the protein will "feed" on the fat.
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands.

What did you snack on?  I can do without bananas but I really like apples.

Now I snack on all kinds of stuff, including M&M's....but when I was dieting I kept to this stuff. I ate every 3 hours and made sure there was protein at every "feeding".

Nuts...primarily cashews, pecans. sometimes peanuts
Cheese...the real stuff, not Velveeta
Breyer's ice cream bars that are carb smart.
Cottage cheese...the real stuff, small curd, with pepper & chives or cilantro. or with fresh blueberries
Yogurt....Greek or the carb-smart stuff. I get it at Kroger's and it's Kroger brand.
Cantelope
Pepperoni or some type of deli meat
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....
