Well, with nearly seven minutes left in the first quarter, it's still Northwestern 0, Nebraska 0.

If Nebraska doesn't get something going in a hurry here, we're mincemeat against that obscure state college in Pennsylvania next week. In theory, against Northwestern, we should be 17-21 points ahead by this time.

Apparently there's a tradition among colleges in the Big 10--it doesn't exist in the Big 12, excepting maybe Missouri and Kansas trade something--to vie for a certain "award."

The Old Oaken Bucket, the Floyd trophy, that sort of trivia.

Fans of the Nebraska Cornhuskers were queried during the week about what sort of trophy to trade between Nebraska and Iowa. I said there shouldn't be any sort of trophy, especially since it's in the natural order of things that our now-annual game with Iowa isn't ever going to mean shit.

But, as usual, franksolich was in a minority.

Most fans selected the corn cob to be the award.

Ugh.

Iowa's a corn state; while Nebraska's the third-largest producer of corn in America, really, Nebraska's a cattle state.

The corn cob however well represents that accurate stereotype of Iowans as being hicks, rubes, and hayseeds, so I guess it's okay.

Among the other top 25, Arizona State 28, UCLA 29 and Oregon 34, Washington 17, both final

A half-and-half situation; one hip trendy cool with-it team losing to a team with history and tradition, and another hip trendy cool with-it team beating a team with history and tradition.

A mixed bag.

But next week, next year, always comes.
