Call me a sucker if you want but I kind of feel for this dummie...sounds like he really feels awful about the situation he is in. He seems to grasp also that his money handling skills are not what they should be. I hope he gets some work soon I can't imagine not seeing my boys for the entire summer....even though they grate on my nerves something fierce at times! :-)

My Family and I will be Homeless in a few Weeks.
I'm sorry to be dumping this on you here, but I remember a few years ago when Kephra died, Plaid Adder made the statement that we are a cyber-family and that we need to share our life experiences with each other.
I was out of work from March of last year until January. Just as I got a job, my wife lost hers. We now have 14 months of 1 income where we've been a 2 income family. Our money and savings have simply run out and there is no other place from where to borrow. By the end of the month, I will be in a homeless shelter, my son will be with his grandmother for the summer and my wife will be staying with one of her girlfriends from school and hopefully be working in her store. We are going to present this to our son as a Summer vacation. We will be on the waiting list for Section 8 and since I'll be in a shelter, we will be a priority.
This summer will be awful since my wife and son will be 600 miles away. We will be together again by the end of the summer but, as anyone who reads most of my threads knows, I am a devoted husband and father. We will miss each other very much. We will do what we have to do and we will rise above this. I've always known that many families are 1 or 2 missed checks away from homelessness. I guess that in a way we're fortunate that it took this long.
I can't describe how awful this feels. I've also learned a lot from it. I will make it a point for the rest of my life to spend every day making this up to my wife and son, because there was no small part that my less than stellar money managing skills played in this. However, it's more a case that the money simply RAN OUT. I always thought that there was a light at the end of the tunnel. I did not realize until too late that that light was a train heading for US!
Anyway, I just wanted to share this. I ask for nothing other than your feedback and (if so inclined) empathy. It won't be long before I'll have to drop down to being an occasional visitor, but I'll be back. Please keep my wife and son in your thoughts and prayers, and take care of yourselves.

But has the DUmmie really learned anything from this?
I learned my lesson in January of 1974.

I feel for him. The bright spot is they have friends and relatives willing to help. Some people are not as fortunate and their kids go along with them to the homeless shelter. For that much, he can and should be grateful. Sounds like he has what it takes to work his way out of this.

I thought the same thing.
Instead of whining...they are doing what they have to do to make it.....and have a plan to overcome the adversity without looking for the government to bail them out.
I would venture to guess that they will make it and be stronger as a family unit when they come out on the other side of this adversity.

Agreed, deb. and the help they will be taking, Section 8, sounds like it is going to be accessed temporarily and was done reluctantly. I do hope they get out of it and perhaps someday when things are better, he can also recognize the difference between being the person who uses gov. resources as a temporary stepping stone versus those who abuse such temporary help in order to avoid getting their lives in shape the way he and his wife are trying to do. Everyone's resources, including his own, should be protected from the latter. I only have compassion for those in the former situation. Sometimes life is messy, despite our best efforts to avoid the mess.

I read the whole thread. It was very un-DUmmie-like. Mostly sympathy and words of encouragement rather than lengthy screeds and diatribes about how he'd be living in a mansion in Malibu if not Chimpy Bushitler and the Rethuglikkkans. Props to the DUmmies on this one.

I hope also that he can get some halfway decent section 8. People just tend to trash these units so badly, they need a full remodel between tenants. It's just a sad fact of human nature. If someone's paying the rent, he feels some sense of "ownership" of the space. If the gov't pays for it, they just say f*** it.

When I had rentals I actually had to remodel quite a few times with the exception of a divorced guy who lived on section 8 for a time with his daughter....he would actually offer to cut the lawn or rake leaves or even clean the carpets he was so thankful for having the assistance....really good guy who now has a great job and is remarried and owns his own home!

After reading what they said about Limbaugh, Tony Snow, and Reagan, I'm in a decidedly non-magnanimous mood this morning. I hope the DUmmy takes this opportunity to rejigger his life and stop posting genuine problems to a board as filled with assholes as DU.
Oh, and David Allen? Poof the Limbaugh kidneys thread, or I'll start sending it around.

Sadly, as more and more jobs are lost, I think we will see more and more people in trouble.
My area has lost more than 4000+ jobs since mid-January, and more jobs are being lost on a daily basis...as once again it's a ripple effect.
As people worry about their jobs and hanging on to whatever money they can....they shop less, go out to eat less...then those jobs are laid off too.
My runnin' buddy's son works at a restaurant where we have hung out at for years (both my daughter and her's worked there when they were in high school and college). Peter is in college now and in an apartment....he's gone from working 10 shifts a week to 3, and some nights he's off by 8 or earlier. This is a restaurant, that when our girls worked there....first as hostesses then servers....the girls were pulling in minimum $150-250 a week in tips!(mine was making $22-25,000/yr while in school)....he's lucky if he's making $50 a week. He has a roommate, and she's supplementing his income by paying his rent, as she wants him to finish school.
I saw where the Hardee's up the road from me closed last week....that leaves a Mickey D's, Domino's and a Subway up there for convenient fast food. I don't know how much that is location, people's eating habits or the economy. I know they were busy in the mornings for breakfast, but I don't know about the rest of the day.
Regardless, my point was that it used to be....if one lost their job, they could at least find temporary jobs. Now, the unemployment rate is going to continue to climb as the economy continues to decline.
We are in a vicious cycle that seems to be just spinning faster out of control......

That is the cardinal rule for interpreting DUmmy whining, and it applies without exception. Don't be surprised if later in the thread this DUmmy has a sockpuppet suggesting that Paypal donation.
There may be a tiny kernel of truth somewhere in all his pathetic moaning - after all, it isn't surprising a DUmmy can't take care of his minimum responsibilities - but if it's there you can be sure it's tiny.

You could of course be right but I guess I found the humility of his post a bit refreshing considering what usually comes off of the isalnd. If indeed he is pulling a scam it is most definetly an original approach for the island! :-)

I think it is more likely a novell approach to a hand-out. Think about it, this is exactly how I would go about it. I won't be surprised when Doug's ex-wife starts a charity thread.

I can't help but wonder why the self-proclaimed smartest people on the planet can't see to be able to make a buck. If they're as bright as they claim to be, they should be rolling in dough. Instead, what I read is thread after thread of doom, despair, and agony.
Once they start admitting they aren't as smart as they believe they are -- in fact, they aren't smart at all -- I'll be more willing to have sympathy towards them, and more importantly they'll be on the road to economic security. Until they come to realize that big gov't isn't the answer, they'll continue to live hand to mouth.

First and foremost, my deepest thanks to all of you whom responded to my Previous thread from Wednesday the 13th with this same title. A few of you sent some much needed $$$ to my PayPal account on the suggesstion of anothjer DUer, we've had words of encouragement and support...and many ideas. We've made contact with a fellow DUer who lives here in Maine and she might be helping us out as she's very willing to do. A perspective employer for my wife has stated that he'd be (reluctantly on both of our family's parts) let us stay with his family for awhile. The reason for the reluctance is the idea of 7 people in a 2 bedroom apartment. We have possibilities that we need to explore, but I still think it more than likely that she my wife and son may end up in Pennsylvania for the summer and I may wind up in the shelter hoping for a quick approval for Section 8.
We'll keep you updated. It seems that we have several options that are either bad or at least less desireable than others we would prefer, such as not being in this situation. We must have conversations and pick a course of action and we must do it soon.
Again, Thank you for your support and encouragement in this heartbreaking and difficult time.
