Title: Car of the Day

'66 Plymouth Modern Concept
These renderings were created for me by Reuben Zammit. I contacted Reuben when I saw his work on the Hubgarage.com and asked if he would be willing to take a shot at modernizing the '66 Belvedere II design. When I finish the Northern Bel Project and if I build a custom version, I think it would look very much like this. Reuben is an extremely talented guy and he developed these sketches with just some input and critiques from me and others close to me. I think this is a highly buildable design and it would do Chrysler a lot of good to build this today!

Supposed to be a '66 Belvedere.

I'd buy one.

We are amidst one of the most persistent bouts of winter weather many parts of the world have ever seen. Chalk it up to Punxsutawney Phil predicting six more weeks of this dreaded season, or perhaps just a good old fashion case of cabin fever, but either way, the crew at Max BMW Motorsport couldn't wait another second to give the 2010 BMW S 1000 RR a good Twist of the Wrist. What? You gonna let a few feet of ice stop you?

Take your regular old 193-horsepower Beemer, fit a set of Michelin Pilots with cleats and you have the makings of a good snow cone business. After watching the video, we think the new BMW S 1000 RR looks ready for battle – the exhaust note alone will confirm that. Plus, you can choose from four unique color selections, as well as BMW's typical A' la carte menu of safety and performance options.

1971 Fiat 850 sedan (http://www.schoolbench.com/cars/fiat850.htm)

Call me a glutton for punishment, but I think the Spider convertible would make a good candidate for an electric car conversion.  Rear engined, rear wheel drive... drop the Fiat engine and bolt an electric motor up to the transmission using an adapter plate.  Batteries in the front... it would make a nice city runabout and semi-daily driver.  The stock 4-pot doesn't make more than 100 horsepower and given potential (un)reliability issues with Fiat parts, a 144-volt DC motor, and more equal weight distribution by placing batteries in the front of the car might actually improve it.

Maybe it's just the cabin fever talking.

1975-1978 Chevrolet Monza V8

Quote from: UDman's Obscure Muscle Car Parking Lot
The Monza 2+2 and its variants were among the first cars to adopt the newly approved quad rectangular headlamps. Monza’s standard engine was the Vega 2.3 liter aluminum-block inline 4-cylinder with a single barrel carburetor, generating 78 horsepower with an optional 2-barrel carburetor version that generated 87 horsepower. That doesn’t sound like a lot of power, but Chevrolet’s new 4.3 liter (262 cid) V-8 engine was optional. It featured a Rochester 2-barrel carburetor that would generate 110 horsepower. Monzas sold in California and high altitude areas of the U.S. were available with a version of the 5.7 liter (350 cid) V-8 engine with a 2-barrel carburetor tuned to put out 125 hp.

Quote from: Car Lust
Yes, I realize it's nothing more than a Chevy Vega with swoopy styling, but the Chevy Monza has long been a guilty pleasure of mine. Not only was the Monza an awfully good-looking car by 1975-1980 standards, but it made an excellent IMSA race car in the capable hands of Al Holbert. Plus, since the Monza could be bought with an anemic small-block V-8, it can easily be retrofitted with something a lot more potent.

The Monza debuted as a 98-pound weakling; even with the optional V-8, it was slower than the also-toothless Ford Mustang II V-8. I've abused other cars in this space for being slow, so it must be said that the very first Monza, meant to be a sporty car in the Camaro vein, was bog slow. Think slower--much slower--than 10 seconds to 60 slow.

Still, by the end of its run in 1980, the Monza had evolved into a relatively quick car by the standards of the time, topping out at more than 120 mph.

1975-1978 Chevrolet Monza V8

Actually, although the Monza was arguably a decently styled vehicle, it was an engineering abortion.......particularly in the V8 configuration.  With the optional V8 engine, you were required to loosten the front engine mounts and jack the entire engine assembly up about three inches in order to change the rear two spark plugs in each bank.

Due to the reduced frontal air intake area, the V8 version was nearly impossible to keep from overheating in warmer climates like Florida and Arizona, and the thermostatically controlled booster fans that were installed as a retrofit solution were so noisy that you could not hear the radio when they were running.

Then there was the body torque problem.  With any early manual transmission version, the unibody was so poorly designed that a hard shift would torque the body to the extent that the doors would not open.  This was resolved by welding stringers under the transmission and engine to strengthen the body, but they further reduced an already minimal ground clearance by about an inch, meaning that the car would drag its undercarriage on most "speed bumps".

Then there was the rust.......mostly built in the same plant as the Vega (Lordstown, Ohio), they suffered from the same poor bare metal rustproofing problems that plagued the Vega, until about mid-production, when the phosphatising dip tanks were replaced, and better quality steel was utilized in the body fabrication.  All at an increased cost of course.  Toward the end of the production run, the vehicle had become so expensive to produce that its end cost, and retail price, rivaled a base model Camaro, which was a far better overall vehicle, from the point of view of quality, and value.  It died an ignomatic death at the hands of the accountants, and none too soon......

Sounds like The Voice of Experience speaking. :lmao:

I like the Vega... it had potential.  Ditto for the Ford Cosworth and a couple other European models they really, really should have brought over here during the late 70's when they were struggling to find an import-fighter.

If it weren't a Chrysler product, I wouldn't have a big problem with it. It's fairly comfortable getting in and out of it and while I wouldn't use it for a long trip, it ain't nearly as uncomfortable as most of the other POS Chrysler/Dodge products I've driven. Of course, the particular PT Cruiser I rode in was fairly new. Don't know what it would be like once the shine wore off.

If you want an example of a real ugly-assed car, the Cube from Nissan is one butt-ugly car. Even the Honda Element isn't as ugly as the Cube.

Buick Regal GNX: Hell on wheels, but not for sale

The sinister-looking black coupe sits in a corner of the showroom floor, oozing macho and muscle. Square headlights. Evil sneer for a grille. Six cylinders of turbocharged fury.

If Darth Vader drove a car, this is what you might find in his garage.

This new car is 23 years old. It's a Buick Regal GNX, and in 1987 car enthusiasts including celebrity collectors Reggie Jackson, Burt Reynolds and Sylvester Stallone snapped them up.

This menacing Buick — one of only about 500 — still sports its original $29,389 sticker on the window. Experts say it could sell at auction for north of $120,000, especially since most of its surviving siblings have many more miles of rough roads under their fenders.

That's probably because he was a moron and didn't know how to tune a Quadrajet....... As far as overheating, he probably didn't have sense enough to get a new radiator....

With  the proper metering rods and some knowledge QJets are awesome!! The only carb I would consider other than a QJet is an Edelbrock carb (for American Muscle) I've tried Thermoquads & Holleys. Holleys leak. Thermoquads are pretty much a QJet knock off and don't work any better than a QJet. It got to the point where I used to be able to rebuild a QJet in a half an hour. Tweaking was only a few minutes.

The most "fun" I've had with carbs was tuning old British cars with side-draft Webers, and then along came the original Corvette which had THREE side-draft Rochesters.......I still have the manometers needed to tune those puppies.  It should probably be in a museum.

When it comes to conventional four-barrels, I'm an AFB fan.....great carb, easy to tune, and had interchangable venturi up to 2-1/2 inches.  A pair of those maxed out on a ram/log intake system, and you could hear them talking to you a half mile away.

One of the fastest production cars of it's time. And it's a V6! :-)
Did I mention a turbo'd V6? :naughty:

Granted it was a clever design, and with some semi-major tweaks, its engine could dyno out at about 700 bhp, but fastest production car of its time.....I'd have to argue with that........fastest in its price/weight class, maybe.

It suffered from the intrinsic problem that all V-6 engines have, vibration and durability at high power outputs, unfortunately though they do  go fast, they don't tend to live very long.

I had the pleasure of test driving one a long while ago. Not a GNX, but a GN, no doubt. Very nice indeed.
One of my friends at the time worked for this dude that was pretty well off and owned a GN and 2 GNX Buicks. The GN he drove here and there and he drove on the GNX's one in a while. The other GNX he had stored away. He also had a couple of 1966 Buick Grand Sport's with the "nail head" engines. (He was a big Buick fan.)

Saw this posted about a year ago.  Always liked the looks of this one of a kind.  Had two of the three cars used - a 57 Chevy and a 59 Chevy.
