Shrimp and scallops
« on: March 25, 2011, 06:22:11 PM »
I just saw this ad for scallops. $9.99 for 1 lbs. I wonder if that is a good price. Fresh wild North Atlantic. 13.99 lbs for Farm raised cooked shrimp. Seems awfully expensive to me. It is at Shaws for those who live in New England.

Depends what size scallops and/or shrimp.  $14 a pound for shrimp is pricey.  I'm wondering how large those scallops are for ten bucks a pound.

Think I'd rather have steak.

21-25 scallops to a pound( North Atlantic sea scallops tend to be bigger)
16-20 shrimp and they are farm raised. That might reflect the price.

I love steak, but have to watch my cholesterol, so limit that to once or twice a month

If I was watching my wallet, I'd buy half a pound each along with a cheap eye of chuck steak ($4/lb here) and make a big batch of paella for the weekend.  I already have sausage in the freezer, rice, and vegetables.

I was thinking of getting a pound of each, dividing them into 6 to a plastic baggie, and mixing them with stirfry(olive oil) veggies over pasta or rice. That  comes out to eight meals in all(each meal would be under 5 dollars and healthy as well)

Sounds good.  Grilled shrimp would be nice on a salad.

Yes, I love them like that!  I have a pal with a restaurant who can get us HUGE shrimp where 3 are filling.

In the meantime, Schwan's is in my next order.  Tasty.  The heck with cholesterol.

If I saw a deal like that for good sea scallops I would buy a few pounds.  It is very rare that I can get them that good and cheap here.  The shrimp doesn't seem like as good as a deal, but I can get gulf shrimp at a good price here most of the time.

I cleaned up with the oil spill.  No one wanted gulf shrimp.  It was all harvested before the spill, but the stores had to off load it and were selling it for $2.99/lb.  I bought it all, and overloaded my freezer.   :-)

I must have missed that. Inga & I both LOVE shrimp. Neither one of us saw any on sale for that cheap.

Yup.  Last April, right after the oil spill, every week the Kroger kept bringing that price down more and more, and I got it all!  Or most of it, somewhere around 30 lbs.  I did the same with Pork during the H1N1 scare.   :-)

Oh I thought you got a lot of shrimp, Good price though from the store.  I normally freeze 100 pounds a year and pay $2.50 with heads, $4.00 headed usually in the 16-30 count, yet these are all right off the boat.

$9.99 is great for sea scallops

Here are some bacon wrapped scallops and shrimp

Some more shrimp

Personally I stay away from all farm raised shrimp unless it's from the USA or Belize

I do as well.  Same with Crawfish.  Headed to the Texas Gulf soon, hopefully I can get some right off the boat.  I miss going out to the pier and buying fresh dinner, used to do it with my Grandparents all the time.

Yeah that's the only way I buy usually.  We have a lot of commercials around here as NC seems to be the predominant fisherman for the east coast. Hell asa of now we can still buy redfish that's wild caught.

I wouldn't recommend eating anything out of the gulf for quite a while. There's STILL oil slicks along the coast lines in various places and that crap they put in the water,COREXIT, is causing major medical problems with a lot of folks in La.

I'm pretty careful too as I see some of the reports from Mote Marine Research, where I volunteer.

What I really avoid is that farmed crayfish and shrimp from China. I avoid most food from China. SR bought a package of Crayfish from Whole Foods, and I looked at the packaging at home. It went right back. I don't trust them, sorry to say.

In general I don't like farmed fish, but Mote Marine has a facility where they farm sturgeon. They have sturgeon and caviar sales from time to time, but haven't bought any yet. I never developed a taste for caviar. Guess I'm just too middle west and down to earth.  :-)

My husband was on the Gulf Coast during the peak of that oil spill last summer off and on for 3 months.  His whole crew ate fresh shrimp and fish every night they were there.  No one got sick.

If it smells bad, tastes bad, why would you put it in your mouth ?  You wouldn't but BP was handing out checks so what the hell. Why not get some of that.  Not defending BP, what happened should never have happened but when people see dollars, they get sick REAL quick. Know what I mean ?

You should never handle raw seafood without gloves.  NEVER. If the shrimp were contaminated, most likely you got sick from getting stuck. Not from eating it.

Never buy shrimp off the dock from someone you don't know. There are people that sell whatever.  That's what will make you sick and they don't care.  Always ask. The reputable people will tell you where to go.
