New Jersey - Somerset County investigators In New Jersey seized a cache of weapons including a grenade launcher and hundreds of rounds of ammunition today from the Branchburg motel room of a Virginia man, who also had maps of a U.S. military facility and an out-of-state civilian community. Authorities have not released details of what the man was planning, but from this report, it appears they may have prevented something catastrophic from taking place.

Lloyd Woodson, 43, whose last known address was Reston, Va., today faces multiple offenses, including second-degree unlawful weapons possession and fourth-degree possession of prohibited weapons, Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne Forrest said.

At the time of his arrest, Woodson was wearing a military-style ballistic vest with a reinforced steel plate and carrying a .223-caliber assault rifle that had been altered to fire .50-caliber ammunition, Forrest. He was also carrying four loaded magazines with hollow-point ammunition, Forrest said.

Branchburg police confronted Woodson at 3:55 a.m. at the Quick Chek convenience store on Route 28 after receiving a call reporting a suspicious person. Branchburg Patorlman Steven Cronce noticed a large bulge beneath the green, military-style jacket that Woodson was wearing, which was later determined to be the assault rifle with a defaced serial number.

    Other entities involved in the case now include the FBI, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives — both part of the federal Joint Terrorism Task Force, as well as the New Jersey equivalent of that task force, Forrest said.

    In a search of Woodson’s room, police seized a Bushmaster .308-caliber semi-automatic assault rifle with a defaced serial number, a 37-mm Cobray grenade launcher, a second ballistic vest, a rifle mountable night vision scope, a police scanner, a military-style backpack, a map of a U.S. military installation and a map of an out-of-state civilian community, a Middle Eastern red and white traditional headdress, and hundreds of additional .50-caliber and .308-caliber ammunition along with military pouches and garrison equipment.

Let's not break our necks jumping through hoops here people:

1.  He could be some other kind of nut entirely, nothing in that info indicates Islamist yet.

2.  This is New Jersey local and state LE information.  In NJ, carry hollowpoint ammo is illegal, so are 'Assault weapons,' and even magazines that hold 20 or more rounds (It's actually lower but I've put the exact number out of my mind since leaving that shithole).

3.  That Cobray launcher really isn't a grenade launcher, though it's made to look as much like one as possible, since they don't make 37mm grenades.  You would have to start with the flare or tear gas rounds that actually fit it and then roll your own.

4.  The .50 Beowulf is not exactly a death ray, it's basically more of a supersized pistol round with a rebated rim to fit inside the bolt head of an AR, basically it ups the stopping power of an AR at close range with the normal trade-offs.  There are .50 BMG conversions but they are single shot or bolt action repeaters, it isn't clear in the source which one they're talking about but odds are if it was concealed at all it was the .50 Beowulf.  It's just another sexed-up AR.

A U.S. Navy spokesman, Lt. Justin Cole, said Woodson joined the service in February 1988 and served aboard the USS Orion, a submarine tender, before deserting in April 1989. It would be eight years before he was returned to Navy custody, Cole said. A month later, in August 1997, Woodson was discharged.

It remained unclear last night whether he was passing through New Jersey or settling in for a longer period. He took a room last week at the Red Mill Inn, on Route 22. Shortly before 4 a.m. today, he was in a Quick Chek convenience store on Route 28 when someone in the store called police, saying Woodson had been acting suspiciously.

IIRC, Dix has been largely relegated to mothballs, coming alive on weekends for Reserve and NG training. Army BT is no longer conducted there.

If this guy was trying to make an impact, Dix doesn't make sense. It's too quiet.

Dix is actually a pretty busy place, since it's the main MTA for Guard and Reserve ground units in the whole NE under Federal control (There's Drum, of course, but it's basically inaccessible to anything that isn't already there).  Most of the troop activity is on weekends, but in terms of Soldier training days it is very high up among CONUS Army MTAs. 

Still, Army forts lack critical targets, in attacking one you can certainly kill people but you aren't going to bring the operation to its knees or take out any irreplaceable equipment or infrastructure.  Even as far as leaders are concerned, the phrase 'Irreplaceable Soldier' is an oxymoron.  It's just the nature of what forts and ground-combat-oriented military organizations are.  There are a lot of targets that are more high-value or more prone to critical failure at particular nodes than Fort Dix, but let's not get carried away with proving how smart we are by doing the target analysis homework for any prospective terrorists, eh?  I recommend everyone zip it on posts along this line of thought, and just keep their own counsel.
