LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - When Robert Downey Jr. put on dark make-up for film comedy "Tropic Thunder," the actor ventured into the racially charged territory of blackface, an old showbiz convention that is no laughing matter.

Downey said he initially worried that his portrayal of a white actor playing a black man could hurt his career, and he bristled at being given what he thought would be the most controversial role in the film directed by Ben Stiller.

But so far, "Tropic Thunder," which opens on Wednesday, has generated no backlash against the 43-year-old star of "Iron Man." ... (LINK)

....but two black guys dressing up like white women in "White Chicks" is still OK. Eddie Murphy putting on white face in a "bus experiment" on SNL is OK. Chappelle putting on white face and becoming a reporter during the "Reparations" episode is OK.

**** your double standards.  ::)

I thought the previews looked silly myself. I get that impression from a lot of movie previews of late. When I do venture to give them a watch  sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised. Some examples: "Code Name: The Cleaner", "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins", "The Hammer".

I saw the behind the scenes thing on HBO. It does look funny and I'm not a Ben Stiller or Jack Black fan. I usually avoid their movies.

Don't worry Rebel, according to an article in Entertainment Weekly, the real black guy that was part of the cast gave a thumbs up or down on some of the dialogue as they were filming. He stopped Downey from using the N word apparently.  :whatever:

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Name one movie Ben Stiller has been in that wasn't funny. Zoolander is an all-time favorite of mine.  :lmao:

I just heard on NPR that "some groups" have their panties in a knot over Downey's character that's supposed to be retarded.

Someone hurt the Washington Post's feelings.  Wah wah.

I hope others will join me in shutting this movie out of our lives and our pocketbooks. We don't live in times when labeling and humiliating others is funny. And we should send that message far and wide.

i heard Medved talking about it and here is what the idiots are probably upset about; Ben Stiller talks at length in the movie-within-a-movie about how people like Sean Penn get Oscars, "they play retards"

and the joke just keeps on going about how most actors who win the gold do so because they play retarded guys..

i guess Hollyweird doesnt like the public knowing what it is they do for a living?

we want to see it as well... looks funny as hell.

Ain't that the truth!

Wasn't this "war as a backdrop for humor" stuff pretty well covered by the Hot Shots! movies?  Now THOSE were funny.

I liked Night at the Museum in spite of Stiller. I really, really can't stand him. He acts like he's owed reverence because of his DNA.

And his acting is just like his folks' -- perfect for Vaudeville.
