I have five or six of his LPs. I don't know whether or not that qualifies me as a fan as well. But, unlike Eupher, I used to play trombone (I don't think he ever stopped) and have only recently re-started.

It's been a very long time since I've played in a big band - and I miss it. Sigh. On trombone (bass and tenor), I've played strictly orchestral literature since 1995.

Boosey & Co. Imperial Euphonium, built in 1941
Edwards B454 bass trombone, built 2012
Bach Stradivarius 42OG tenor trombone, built 1992

An H5 to you as well!   :-)

I was a band geek and learned about him back in the early 80s.  I was a tenor saxophone and a closet drummer.  I recently picked up bass guitar but my 1st love are the drums.

Thanks, CC. Toward  the end, he was playing very, very poorly and was extremely obese. I caught one of his last performances in the Salt Lake City area in 2004. He passed of kidney failure in early 2006, IIRC.

In his day he was an unbridled monster of the trumpet - while he solos weren't nearly as lyrical as Clark Terry's for example, he played with power and accuracy (which is a helluva lot more than you can say for guys like Lin Biviano, who had chops out the ass but was notoriously inaccurate) and did more for jazz education than anybody I can think of.

If you like lead trumpet players, here's a good web site with lots of stuff to melt your speakers with:

Scream Trumpets
Adams E2 Euphonium, built in 2017
Boosey & Co. Imperial Euphonium, built in 1941
Edwards B454 bass trombone, built 2012
Bach Stradivarius 42OG tenor trombone, built 1992

About as good as it gets.

Listen to the whole album, it's great old-school prog. (yes I'm a Genesis nut)

This is a masterpiece:

I stand atop a spiral stair

He leads me on light years away
Through astral nights, galactic days
I see the works of gifted hands
That grace this strange and wondrous land
I see the hand of man arise
With hungry mind and open eyes
